Extreme (the band)
Any fans? I had their first few albums. Excellent musicians. Absolutely horrible songwriters. The 2 ballads were good for what they were. Kid Ego was pretty good. The rest was just unlistenable / forgettable schlock.
Without the 2 ballads, would they have just been a footnote in Rock?
Oh...Get the Funk Out was a TERRIBLE song.

Re: Extreme (the band)
Probably. Their stuff just didn't age well. I loved Porno when it came out but Nuno's ADA-1 heavy overdrive tone is so tinny and dated-sounding. And don't get me started on III Sides. I'm sure their A&R guy wanted to hang them for that one. They didn't die because they were a hair band in 1992, they died because they were a hair band that decided to make a Queen record in 1992, when Queens own records had been ignored in America for 10 years. One of the more spectacular hair band flameouts (pun intended).

Yes, and yes. Also, never liked Cherone's voice or stage presence.DemonFilth2001 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 25, 2023 7:13 am

Extreme are a Twisted Sister five years later. A mediocre band that got lucky with two hit singles. The difference is that nobody from TS would ever get a job in Dream Theater.....

Have 4 first albums but am a little embarrassed about it. You´re right the are horrible songwriters (like almost all hair metal bands were).DemonFilth2001 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 25, 2023 7:13 am Any fans? But what do you mean with 2 ballads? More Than Words and...? I really don't remember them having another one.

Nuno is the only reason to listen to Extreme.
He should’ve gone the Malmsteen route of the naming the band after himself.
Total guitar hero band.

A great band in desperate search of better songs.
Pornograffiti was good at the time but hasn’t dated that well, the awful Aerosmith inspired keyboard brass and Cherone’s singing is really harsh.

They have some good songs here and there even if, yeah, a lot of that was down to Nuno's playing. Overall, I like them.

Winger and Extreme are my two favorite bands of the era. Big fan.

I LOVED porno at the time, but ya....aged horribly.
Hole Hearted is an amazing tune. Easily their best and one of the best of the entire genre.

Re: Extreme (the band)
Not one of my "favorite" bands, but enough good songs scattered throughout their career. I think I appreciate the debut now, more than back in the day, and I agree Pornographetti didn't age well. New album(Six) has some good stuff on it, and the previous album (Saududes De Rock) was also ok.
And as far as songwriting in general, Extreme is like the Beatles compared to Twisted Sister.......

Nuno's an excellent guitarist, and I still have Decadence Dance in my playlist...but...they're a horrible band, I gave Porno multiple spins but got sick of their funky style. THEY SUCK!!!!!!!

The only band that pulld off mixing hair metal and funk was Electric Boys and that was for one album only, after that they were much less funky and more Beatles / Hendrix bluesy rock.Psychobolia.com wrote: ↑Tue Dec 26, 2023 1:27 am Nuno's an excellent guitarist, and I still have Decadence Dance in my playlist...but...they're a horrible band, I gave Porno multiple spins but got sick of their funky style. Never got the hype for 3 Sides either. Always came off like people hyping it knew it was crap but pretended it was brilliant so they could seem cool.

Never dug Kid Ego. Didn’t hate it but could take or leave it. I liked Mutha much better.DemonFilth2001 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 25, 2023 7:13 am Any fans? I had their first few albums. Excellent musicians. I’m probably a bigger fan now than I ever was circa 1989-1992. Decade is solid. They haven’t released a bad album since. The debut is the only album I don’t listen to.

I was lukewarm to it at first. Once I really listened to it a couple of times through I didn’t understand the mass exodus other than our generation were easily led and manipulated by MTV.BernieTaupson wrote: ↑Tue Dec 26, 2023 6:26 am Never got the hype for 3 Sides either. Extreme might not have been Van Halen, they were better than bands like Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, Ratt, WASP and junk like that. If you want to talk about a band who couldn’t write songs, Quiet Riot were the poster children for this genre. Their albums suck.
Re: Extreme (the band)
They have some great songs. The downside is they also have complete duds on their albums that could have been cut...like Seven Sundays. Their first couple of albums have 80s cheese in them that doesn't stand the test of time.

They didn't have the heart to take it to the used CD shop where it belonged. You know it was Gayboy Sharona's wet dream to make a Queen record.BernieTaupson wrote: ↑Tue Dec 26, 2023 6:26 am Never got the hype for 3 Sides either. Nuno couldn’t shut up about Brian May at the time. So much so, I thought Nuno might be coming out of the closet. Axl couldn’t make up his mind who he wished he could be more in 1991-1992, Freddie or Elton. But it’s Gary who is the gayest?Bono Nettencourt wrote: ↑Tue Dec 26, 2023 7:28 amThey didn't have the heart to take it to the used CD shop where it belonged. Re: Extreme (the band)
He is the least heterosexual man who ever fronted Van Halen, a band otherwise fronted by Sammy Gaygar and David Lee Fruith. If he was a good singer he would have fit right in with early Vinnie Vincent Invasion.Tommy2Tone84 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 26, 2023 8:26 amNuno couldn’t shut up about Brian May at the time. "III Sides To Every Story" is an underrated album. I like the last three songs, but none of them were released as singles.

Re: Extreme (the band)
For me the best band mixing hair metal and funk were easily Dan Reed Network. Slam, Heat and the second comeback album Let's Hear It for the King are all class. The s/t is good too but it's hardly hair metal at all.Hellsinkey wrote: ↑Tue Dec 26, 2023 8:29 amAgreed. I'd take Living Colour over Electric Boys too. Not to say Electric Boys weren't good. I was a fan during Funk O Metal Carpet Ride & Groovus Maximus era. I don't find the later songs that great.

1st Extreme cd cover is massive 10. Perfect way to describe best music best era. First 5 songs - hair metal perfection.
I was stoked when MTV went crazy for Extreme awhile after More Than Words exposure
I always look forward to Extreme shows
I also look forward to UCLA beach volleyball starting in 2 months. All games on campus. Nuno would dig these

Jani Lane and Bret Michaels should form a band called "Nelson II"
