Songs that make you cry.

Songs that make you cry.

Post by AlexVonHaig »

I await for the "anything by KI$$" type comments but seriously. We all have an emotional side and some songs are genuinely poignant.

Please no "anything in D minor"

Not sure any songs actually make me cry, but Air Supply have some of the best sad songs. If I listen to a full album, then I'll definitely feel a little down.

Good call! That song, The End of the Innocence and New York Minute for the Don Henley trifecta. Even Boys of Summer gets me.

I’m not talking about literally crying. They just…well…get down to the heart of the matter.

I’ll add Chris Stapleton Maggie’s Song for the animal lovers out there.

Second on this one. Put my dog to sleep earlier this year and this song wouldn't quit coming up on random playlists...

"Somewhere" in the context of West Side story.
Probably saw it for first time when I was five.
Maria cradling Tony's lifeless body as she sings still chokes me up.

For me it was Wildfire. Don't know why this song reminded me of my deceased dog, considering it's about a horse, but it just does.

Henry Gross - Shannon

This one really is about someone's dog. Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys sings harmony.

I cried when I heard the song, "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" on the radio after my brother died.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUWZqbumaZo

I also had a tear in my eye when I heard this song played instrumentally at a kd lang soundcheck, with no lead vocal....just the music and
background singers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTRbo3-8ur4

I think it's one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

I was thinking something like this. I can honestly say never. A movie or TV show might trigger welling-up, but honestly, cry, no. I'm not wired to be sentimental. My wife and I often talk about retirement, getting out of Ohio, selling the house, etc. Our kids grew up in this house, but it's a house. I have my memories, pictures, videos. I don't care about a house. I don't need to stay here for those things to exist. When my dad died last year, I didn't shed a tear until they did the military rights at the cemetery. That was moving. Otherwise, I watched and helped him for a year. I knew what was coming and made sure the best I could that he was in no pain throughout.

I haven't had a close relative die for +20 years and the last one had dementia so he was effectively 'dead' for a few years before, so I had plenty of time to process. My 1 remaining grandparent is in a similar position - goldfish memory but, somehow, a tough body. She still just about knows who I am but it takes her longer each visit. So, much as I love her, I probably won't cry for her either. I'll just be glad she's not in her current state.

The song I posted is (to me) beautifully plaintive (probably d minor!) and is based on the singer's real family. I don't have tears rolling down my cheeks but definitely moist eyes.

The Pass by Rush has brought me to tears several times.
The Broad Majestic Shannon by The Pogues would choke me up, even before Shane's passing. I haven't listened to it since he died but I have heard Fairytale of New York & it made me tear up.
