What's your take on The Smashing Pumpkins?

Post by SchenkerFan »

Over the years, I've listened to some of their songs and I didn't think too much of it. I gave it another try today and I really dig it. Cherub Rock, Disarm, 1979, ... great tunes. Is this change because I'm in my mid 30s now?

Awesome. Tell us how good Nirvana and Pearl Jam were next.

I was raised in the 90s and was never a big fan beyond the singles.

Zeitgeist is my favorite album of theirs which makes me a terrible SP fan.

The 15-20 songs of theirs that I like I really like, and the rest consistently goes over my head. I don’t know why most of their stuff doesn’t connect with me. It just doesn’t.

Probably the only band out of the 90s that I thought was interesting. Not enough to buy a record but there is something about them that I find enjoyable enough.

I always plan on digging into their stuff but just never have.

I love Siamese Dream. Beyond that, there are songs here and there that I think are great.

I saw them headline Lalapalooza in ‘94, and they were phenomenal - particularly Billy & Jimmy.

I saw them a couple of years later, touring for Adore, and they were as exciting as watching dried paint - even with Kenny Aronoff behind the kit.

Their first 3 albums certainly have their moments.

Since the first three songs on Siamese Dream are all really the same song, I’d call the Pumpkins a one-hit-wonder.

Billy Corgan is easily one of THE most talented, MOST successful and SMARTEST guys from the 90's!

His history in the business is well beyond his own band, that sold a lot of records, including a Diamond record... not many get those!

Listen to him in any interview, and it's immediately apparent, he is way smarter than the average rocker!

I worked at Virgin Records (their label) for a few years in the late 90's, and they were 1 of the labels biggest darlings, along with Lenny Kravitz.

Corgan shits all over Cobain and most of the other 90's guys... all day... and it's not even close.

His band had huge success, but he also has co-wrote hits for others, produced records, and worked on a bunch of soundtracks.

There is a reason why his agreement with Sharon Osbourne to manage his band lasted only a few months. In short, he was not dumb, and was not about to be pushed around, manipulated or talked to like she's done with her dumb addict husband for 4+ decades.

I give Corgan all props... and I think those few records in their heyday were masterpieces for sure!

Absolutely true. His interview with Rick Beato last year, and when he was on Lars’ podcast a few years ago, are prime examples.

He is so awesome on Enuff Z’Nuff’s paraphernalia you know he did the cheap trick cover with the band. Every thing works if you let it!

Chip used to talk about it in interviews

Exactly... great listen... some amazing stories too!

In short... at some point makes it kinda clear... he influenced Nirvana's "Nevermind".

Overall they’re good, but not great. “Cherub Rock”, “1979”, and “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” are all awesome songs, though, and I like ‘em enough.

OK. Band. Had a couple of their CD's. Good, but overrated.

Really turned to crap after the 3rd release. Like Pearl Jam.

Was never a huge fan, but their music was great for the time.

Also, I recently listened to a podcast on the Sirius Elvis channel with Corgan.
He was great friends with Lisa Marie and his stories of working with her were amazing, and also heartbreaking given the situation.

This.

The 90s was the Twilight Zone. People were ripping on Hair Metal but listening to dogsh*t like this, Nirvana, Marilyn Manson, NIN, White Zombie, Static X, Korn, and Limp Bizkit. It’s all schlock

If I want to listen to an annoying singer I’ll throw on some Mark Slaughter, Les Claypool or Mike Patton and kick back with a puzzle.

Not a fan of the SP, but BC's work on the Spun soundtrack was very good, his acoustic take on Number of the Beast is pretty fresh:

In my old age sometimes I think Kenny G has more street cred than Lenny (Romeo Blue) Kravitz.

At least Katy Perry had him (Kenny G) cameo in her Last Friday Night video on Saxophone in person.
