And yes, Soul Asylum counts - but I didn't include them as I've only heard two of their 12 or so albums.

Only 2 are good. But they're damn good.

Collective Soul is the BEST 90's band. Live is a top 5. Don't consider either grunge.

The other 3 are Nu Metal.

What a truly miserable time to be 20-something. With only the possible exception of AIC, these bands are all awful. Think I still have 90s PTSD.

AIC
STP
Pantera
Nirvana
Soundgarden

Not including Radiohead, Green Day, or Tool because they had too much success in the 00s to be considered 90s bands imo.

This thread is inspiring me to check out more Soul Asylum. Misery is one of my favorite songs ever, I play it all the time, but haven’t really checked out their other stuff besides Runaway Train and Just Like Anyone. If anyone has a few suggestions, TIA!

Let me tell you something, I hated the fucking 90's. 90's fucking sucked.

I remember the mid-90s alternative thing happening. Alternative is such a strange category. People define it in many different ways. Some even said Load was an Alternative album. When it reaches mainstream popularity, is it still alternative?

2) Soundgarden
3) Screaming Trees/Lanegan solo
4) Pearl Jam

I'd have Mother Love Bone in there, but perhaps they really should be considered '80s. No "Rage" because while I like Tom and enjoy the rhythm section, I cannot abide the singer for an instant.

One thing that defined alternative was the lyrical themes and the bands' image. Alternative bands wrote songs and talked about politics and social issues. That was something new as in the 80s mainstream, socially conscious meant something like U2 or Springsteen. The 80s were not very political, it was still the cold war and you were either with us or with the bad guys.

MLB. Known for an OD, two members of Pearl Jam, and a successful tribute album. Overall, a blip on the music scene.

Really?

You believed all the bullshit they fed you or you were too high or too young to remember. The 80s was very political. You must be too young to remember the PMRC Hearings. Ozzy getting sued, Priest getting sued by shitty assed psycho parents over their lyrics. KISS, who were not that popular at the time, got picketed by religious nuts on their 1983 tour

Then there was Live Aid, Farm Aid, We Are The World. I’ll even throw in the Moscow Music Peace Festival, August 1989. The Berlin Wall fell a couple months later. It had been a slow burn but I have no doubt that festival helped. I couldn’t imagine something like that happening now.
