Does Dolby Atmos/Spatial Audio sound terrible to you?

The one that started it all. Spreading gossip and insults since 1998.

Does Dolby Atmos/Spatial Audio sound terrible to you?

Post by Chip Z'Hoy »

Anyone got Apple Music? Are you using the Dolby Atmos/Spatial Audio option?

Pop music tends to sound okay, but rock music almost always sounds like shit. The Motley remasters are especially terrible.

They got Raw Power in Dolby Atmos which is kinda funny. Wow, it's like the excruciatingly cranked up vocals are right next to me.

Most of it is complete shit, especially catalog 2 channel that is being "remixed" as Atmos. With those, most mix engineers are not getting paid much to do it from the labels and seldom if ever is the artist and original producer involved.

Unless it's specifically recorded as multichannel , including object audio (not just static Atmos 7.1.4 bed), you'll be hard pressed to find much there.

Then, you listen to it with cheap buds or even worse a fucking soundbar, both of which destroy any chance of hearing something that isn't just absolute dog shit.

Not much different with movies either, same problems with catalog and static Atmos mixes (especially made for streaming movies with a small handful of exceptions).

Atmos for Cinema and Atmos for Home Theater are two very different things and with the majority of people using soundbars with pseudo surround bullshit, creators are fucked.

There's a reason you don't see a soundbar in movie theaters.
