Sounds like BS to me, his mother has 24hr care so its not like he really has to be there all the time, could have easily gone out for 6-8hrs and would have been ok

Very selfish on Richie's part. This wasn't about him. It was about Jon, the band's legacy and the MusiCares charity.
Springsteen's mom died just 2 nights prior. He made it to the show. Paul McCartney was there as well. What a huge event.

I hope it had nothing to do with his battle with sobriety. Sambora sounded under-the-influence during a podcast a few months ago.
