People who deeply regretted quitting their band?

Post by ParaDime77 »

Through the course of time a lot of players in big bands decided to either leave the group due to burn out, substance, politics, money etc. Who do you think of off the top of your head as far as guys and or gals who left quality gigs due to personal decisions and therefore wanted back into the fold at some point?

Mike Portnoy. Sure he made it back in, but it was a long 13 years for him.

My understanding is that Boris Williams regretted leaving The Cure.

I know Ben Shepard from Soundgarden acted like a drunken psychotic asshole onstage for the last several dates of their Down On The Upside tour. The last show they played in Hawaii this silly fucker is having equipment problems and just leaves the gig entirely, which really upset the rest of the band, especially Kim Thayil. This was the last straw for Chris, who quit the band soon after. Dipshit Ben wound up homeless and sleeping on friends couches. He was basically suicidal.

So I know that Shepard didn't technically "quit" the band but he did quit playing in the middle of a big show and to me that is basically fucking quitting.

Way to bite the hand that feeds.

Newsted has to have some regrets…

Newsted, though he’ll never admit it.

Heard a boxing coach on a podcast say something to the effect of “When you quit, you think that’s the escape. But often times it’s the opposite - that’s the life sentence to a prison called regret”

You’ve gotta say every single one that left because of stupid shit and then the band continued to rake in the cash. I don’t care what guys like Dianno say about how the band changed and wasn’t “street” anymore or whatever, those guys cry themselves to sleep every night because they fucked it up for themselves.

Clive Burr (who was a way better drummer than Nicko McOverplay) couldn’t sort out his drinking.

Brian Robertson in Lizzy … and that fuckwit had two or three chances and still blew it. He did a similar thing when he was briefly in Motörhead after that.

Jake E Lee, who officially got fired for tardiness.

Pete Willis, John Norum and Steven Adler. Norum got to come back... but still missed out on Europe's peak years.

Adrian and Bruce learnt it was better to suck it up and let Steve run the ship and play stadiums than it was to struggle in front of 200 people in clubs. That being said, Maiden were mostly running on fumes in the mid 90s themselves.

Di'Anno, Burr, Adler and half of the others got kicked out, that's not what this tread is about.

Steven Van Zandt admitted quitting before Born in the USA was a pretty bad decision. He regretted missing out on the jackpot for 15 years, until Sopranos and reunion finally landed him fuckyoumoney in 1999.

He's on the record saying he missed the music, but couldn't handle the lifestyle and wouldn't have survived more years of rock'n'roll debauchery.

Yeah he was very publicly forced out... how can anyone who's been here more than a week not know this?

Quit or fired....sometimes the lines blur.
I'll add Bob Welch of Fleetwood Mac.

I dunno, I mean, yeah, I'm sure he regretted it after the Avenged Sevenfold guys decided they didn't want their dad hanging around anymore, but he was absolutely EVERYWHERE during that time period. I don't think that happens if he's stuck playing in Dream Theater.

Phil Lewis quitting LA Guns with his passive aggressive/lateral move to play with Tracii (again). I know the old Diva likes to play the victim and make it sound like he was a "hired gun" for Riley, but they had a solid/drama free run for 15 years after Tracii quit. Now he's playing the same size venues, (with a guy he can't stand) and probably making less per show.

AND..... no denying Tracii is an underrated guitar player, but the 4 "reunion" albums suck compared to previous 2 (Tales From The Strip and Hollywood Forever).

ALSO, you know Spoons is annoyed/jealous/envious of Tracii's multiple side projects, and always having in the back of his mind that Tracii will probably bail on LA Guns (again).

Has the guy from the Beatles been mentioned yet? Pete Best.

This thread makes me think about Jackie Martling, who quit the Howard Stern Show in a power move to get more money.

It was a cush gig, they called his bluff and he ended up with nothing. I'm sure he falls into the "deep regret" category.

I think Ace likes the money and notoriety of being in KISS more than actually being in KISS.

He did it for good reason, but I bet William Goldsmith regrets quitting the Foo Fighters.

David Silvera regrets quitting Korn.
