Gimme your top 10 hair band albums

Post by SchenkerFan »

Mine in no specific order:

Motley Crue - Too Fast for Love
Def Leppard - Pyromania
Whitesnake - 1987
RATT - Invasion of your Privacy
Night Ranger - Dawn Patrol
Riverdogs - s/t
Harem Scarem - s/t
Dokken - Under Lock and Key
White Lion - Pride
Gn'R - Appetite for Destruction

I was doubting to include Van Halen but it feels wrong to call them a hair band.

Agree with about half of the list. Including GnR.

Look at the early pictures of GNR. They used hairspray.

That's highly debatable, given some of the pictures that are out there. And the fact that they've influenced just about every hair band out there. And when you look at the playlist of any glam/hair metal event, there's always a few VH tunes on there.

If they've appeared on those stupid clickbait "Top 50 Hairbands" lists that everybody complains about or those old VH1 countdowns, I'm counting them as a "hair band". Sorry if that makes Eddie turn over in his grave.

I love the hits, the anthems. Not so much the guitar-wanking deep cuts.

Alphabetically:

Def Leppard - "Hysteria"
Heart - "Heart"
Skid Row - "Slave To The Grind"
Van Halen - "1984"
Van Halen - "Van Halen"
Van Halen - "Van Halen II"
Warrant - "Cherry Pie"
Whitesnake - "Whitesnake"
Wildside - "Under The Influence"
Y&T - "Down For The Count"

I wanted to include Roxette's "Joyride". Part of me thinks if I included Heart, I could include Roxette, but whatever. "Hair metal"... "arena rock"... who cares.

Love the Motleys, GNRs, and Poisons, but I've just been tired of all of them for quite awhile now. If I made this list every year, they'd probably make the most appearances of all-time, mainly when I was younger.

If it was "80s albums", I'd probably have Duran Duran, Genesis, Huey Lewis & The News in there somewhere. Not sure who I'd remove. Good thing OP asked for "hair band albums"!

What's your timeline? When exactly did the "hair metal movement" start then? Are G'n'R not part of it either? And do you honestly believe that most of the artists associated with the "hair band" movement consider themselves a hair band? And finally, if you start a movement, assuming VH launched the so-called movement, why can they not be a part of it?! That's like saying that McDonald's can't be part of the junk food movement!

And if we think about it, weren't VH (at least partly) molded on Zep - are they a hair band too then?

I could argue the starting point for softer, pretty boy metal was when Mötley had a huge hit with Home Sweet Home. That opened the gates for all the Bon Jovis, Europes, Extremes and Poisons. The problem is that using that definition would exclude Mötley themselves and also Quiet Riot and Ratt and we all know they are hair bands :)

Based on my mood right now:

Ratt - Out of the Cellar
Ratt - Invasion of Your Privacy
Poison - Look What the Cat Dragged in
Motley Crue - Girls, Girls, Girls
Def Leppard - Pyromania
Def Leppard - Hysteria
Warrant - Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich
Dokken - Tooth and Nail
Fastway - On Target
Fastway - Bad Bad Girls

Some of these could easily be switched out for others, but that’s my top ten for now…

With VH on the table (which I agree with), I'm going to go buck wild on the definition of hair band.

That's right. AEROSMITH. Total hair band, bros.

1. Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction
2. Van Halen - Fair Warning
3. Motley Crue - Too Fast for Love
4. Skid Row - Slave to the Grind
5. Cinderella - Night Songs
6. Aerosmith - Pump
7. Twisted Sister - Stay Hungry
8. Def Leppard - Pyromania
9. Ozzy Osbourne - The Ultimate Sin
10. Kiss - Animalize
