They should have asked Ace to perform the solos.

Yikes I hope they have this straightened out soon as I’m seeing them Saturday night in Boston. The other songs don’t sound much better.

I was thinking of attending as well, but haven't bought tix yet. Seats are around $70, as of right now, GA $35. After watching that vid, I'm leaning no.nuno_cherone wrote: ↑Sun Jul 28, 2024 8:17 am Yikes I hope they have this straightened out soon as I’m seeing them Saturday night in Boston. Re: Cheap Trick Magical Mystery Tour California State Fair
Huge CT nutswinger here but they've been sounding "rough" for the better point of a decade now. Rick plays with all the neatness and intensity of a Paul D. Frehley and father time has finally caught up with Zander. I used to find a way to see them at least once per year. Whether it was part of a package tour, a corn dog show, or whatever but I haven't this decade. My last show was pre-pandemic. If they ever have a proper headlining gig near me, I will of course go but, like last spring they opened for Heart and I wasn't paying $100 for that. The bummer is, they were really on fire about a decade or so ago but I think they are finally wearing down.

It sounds like they didn't read the thread with everybody's favorite Cheap Trick songs.

I paid 55 for floor. I was supposed to see Priest there but it fell through at the last minute. This will be my first time. I’m hoping to see Marvelous 3 there in November. Have you been yet?

That's Rick’s son, I believe. Rick does a lot of backgrounds too. He looks like he has no interest in being there. Saw them last maybe a decade ago and they were fun and sounded great back then.

Give Bun E. a call, play the "Farewell Tour" Card. Play the mid-size tents, House of Blues, casinos, theatres, etc. for a few years.
Re: Cheap Trick Magical Mystery Tour California State Fair
Fair enough, but I'm betting they can play a little nicer/larger venues in many cities and most certainly get a bigger guarantee. Think, "a little less county fairs, a little more mini-sheds." When they play in Cleveland they play this tiny room at the Northfield Casino. Maybe this move could put them over in Nautica Stage? Just a thought.BernieTaupson wrote: ↑Mon Jul 29, 2024 7:38 pm They’re already playing that market.
Bun can’t play anymore due to his back I thought?

He's still playing as recently as last weekend, the back issues were quite awhile ago. He's not playing with CT because they, or at least Robin, doesn't want him to.BernieTaupson wrote: ↑Mon Jul 29, 2024 7:38 pm They’re already playing that market.

I'm on Bun's side about show length. I cannot fucking stand there for two+ hours. Physically, I can. Mentally, I cannot. I get bored and am ready to leave. 90 minutes is my sweet spot for concerts and movies. I hate the trend of 2-3 hours motion pictures.woblinweebles wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2024 11:40 amHe's still playing as recently as last weekend, the back issues were quite awhile ago. I went to the Totally Tubular Festival (not a festival) of 80s new wave bands packaged up for a summer run. It was almost 6 hours. It was fun, and most of the bands still do quite well. Closing the show was Thomas Dolby and his one-man band of synths. We left after his first song. And I'm just watching. Not beating the skins like Bun.
Re: Cheap Trick Magical Mystery Tour California State Fair
Why do these bands keep going when they clearly don't have to. They only make themselves look like fools.

I've seen them with Daxx on drums several times, once filling in for Bun E and then after he took over, and the shows were longer, but not that much longer. I was at Bun E's last show with CT and they played 17 songs. The next time I saw them headline a couple of years later, they played 19 songs. The main difference when Daxx took over drums was that they changed the setlist quite a bit from night to night. The night before I saw them, about half the set was totally different.TooOldToCare wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2024 11:47 amI'm on Bun's side about show length. I cannot fucking stand there for two+ hours. I'm not a huge fan of long shows either. Back in the 80s, I used to go to the Texxas Jam. It was 5 to 7 bands each year playing an outdoor stadium in Dallas in the middle of summer from noon to 11 pm and I thought nothing of it.
Fifteen years or so later I went to an all day retro show in Dayton/Kettering with 10 acts (Night Ranger, Survivor, Naked Eyes, Romantics, etc...) and that wiped me out.
Saw the Totally Tubular show, too and it had a smaller line up than some of the other shows on the tour - we just got the Plimsouls guy, Men Without Hats, and the two Toms, and even that seemed long Dolby shouldn't have headlined. The other Tom played a longer set, with more hits, a band and better production.

Not to hijack the thread, but yes. Never even heard of The Plimsouls back in the day. Tommy Tutone was fine. Loved Bow Wow Wow (big fan of Adam Ant and the Burundi beat sound), Wang Chung and Men wo Hats were pretty damn good. Modern English was a refreshment break. Thomas Twins was damn good (but maybe had a lot of pre-recorded sounds). Dolby started with the cover of Blue Monday. Love Joy Division and New Order, but bailed. 90 minute drive back to Columbus. I'm old. 1am was too late for me.woblinweebles wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2024 12:09 pm Saw the Totally Tubular show, too and it had a smaller line up than some of the other shows on the tour - we just got the Plimsouls guy, Men Without Hats, and the two Toms, and even that seemed long Dolby shouldn't have headlined. To bring it back to topic, when I last saw CT, it was a radio station-sponsored outdoor wings and beer festival they headlined. Zoso and a few other bands played throughout the day. It was summer, it was hot, but I was also 10-15 years younger (so early 40s). Didn't phase me in the least. Now, I don't want to leave Columbus for a show, and it has to be like an 8-11 affair including the opener. My encore will be to yell get off my lawn.
Re: Cheap Trick Magical Mystery Tour California State Fair
who the hell wants to retire? They are still pulling down several thousands of dollars per show. Maybe $10,000 or more? Plus the perks. Last I heard from my friends in Kansas, who hasn't charted since the 80's?, they were getting $20,000 plus perks (flights/meals/etc.) per show. If CT wasn't making bank, they wouldn't be there. Of course the music and show is Raw. It's live. Got to live in the moment and not watch the video and pick it apart even if if its easy to pick it apart.

Wing Zing! 2013! Last Wing Zing they ever had. Dan Orr said that CT was the band he always wanted to land for the gig anyway and this was they wanted to go out. That was a good radio festival. Interestingly, it wasn't WLVQ that pulled the plug, but Budweiser didn't want to sponsor it any longer. I saw Ted (before he went completely bat shit) one year and .38 Special/Donnie Iris another. Always had good wings, cold beer, and a decent enough mix of local bands and cover bands to make it a fun day.TooOldToCare wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2024 3:00 pmThat's it. Got a handful of Rick picks. I was pleasantly surprised. Riverbend in Cincinnati is an outdoor amphitheater built in the 80s, so at least there were many food and drink choices and room to get up and move around. Still too long for me, and the reason I quit doing 3-day festival concerts several years ago. It's become like work for this old guy.tooth wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2024 5:34 am I saw Totally Tubular in Boston & we got all the bands. Re: Cheap Trick Magical Mystery Tour California State Fair
I love a love/hate relationship with Riverbend. On the one hand, the sightlines SUCK and the acoustics aren't much better. The parking lot can be a pain too. That said, there is something about a summer night seeing a band you dig there. The view of the river, the breeze, the sunsetting. I try to find a show that "works" for me there. An arena show like KISS or Maiden, that just pisses me off outside. Last time I saw KISS there the stage wasn't big enough for their spider thing. Something like Hagar or Hootie, that's fine. I don't care if I'm 8 miles back in the lawn, 'cause I'm just gonna chill anyway.TooOldToCare wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2024 6:13 amI was pleasantly surprised. Re: Cheap Trick Magical Mystery Tour California State Fair
We were lucky on parking as we went into the small lot. A little walk, but not bad. But with the summer temps we've been having and seats in the first few rows, that was a mistake. The heat and air density were double what it was on the lawn or food areas. I've lived in Ohio since 1980, and that was my first time there. Used to go to Polaris/Germain Amphitheater often when it existed. And to bring it back to Cheap Trick, I saw them open for Meat Loaf during the BooH 2 Tour in the early-mid 1990s.KISStian wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2024 10:44 amI love a love/hate relationship with Riverbend. Re: Cheap Trick Magical Mystery Tour California State Fair
My wife and I's trick at Riverbend is to show up a little early (time permitting) and just grab dinner at the adjacent Racino. Also, again, time permitting, just kill time there while the lot clears afterwards. Not nearly as bad as the parking up at Blossom. Whoa, boy. That place is a disaster. Better ambience? Maybe, it's literally in the forest, but IMHO, all the sheds are pretty equal. In a perfect summer, I find a show at both.TooOldToCare wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2024 11:28 amWe were lucky on parking as we went into the small lot. A little walk, but not bad. I haven't been to Blossom since the 80s and have no desire to again for the right reasons you mention. It probably is the same today as 40 years ago for parking and the backroads to get there. I'll take a theater or arena show anytime.

I never really understood Cheap Trick, they just don't do it for me. I can think of a zillion other bands I'd rather see. Maybe they literally live up to their name?
