Clash of the Titans tour (90-91)
The Clash of the Titans tour, in 90-91, was Thrash Metal at it's peak with Anthrax/Megadeth/Slayer headlining. How many of you saw this one? Alice In Chains was the opener for one leg of the tour. The story is they didn't go over well with the Thrash fans. Any first hand tales from this tour?

Slayer went over the best, hands down. It was shitty for Anthrax and Megadeth when they had to follow. AIC was "meh" but most people were still getting beers or whatever.Rocker4Real wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2024 5:36 am The Clash of the Titans tour, in 90-91, was Thrash Metal at it's peak with Anthrax/Megadeth/Slayer headlining. I remember being insistent with the boys that we make it inside for AIC. Glad I did.
But there were very few others in there that early. Their loss.

saw the show at the omni in atlanta...slayer closed, aic opened...all were pretty good but it was obvious aic hadn't been on a stage that big before (they seemed more energetic and comfortable on the dirt tour in the masquerade the next time i saw them...at this particular show layne literally just stood there with a foot on the monitor...they sounded good)...d.m.
Re: Clash of the Titans tour (90-91)
Anthrax headlined & AIC opened in Mansfield, Ma. That was the last time I ever saw Slayer or Anthrax or Layne/AIC. I don't remember it being that packed with people. We had comped tix on the lawn.

I saw this tour at Lake Compounce in Bristol, CT.....an amusement park that used to have concerts (saw the Poison/Lita Ford/Britny Fox show there as well).
The order for us was Megadeth, then Slayer, and then Anthrax.
I was about 15 or 16 at the time, and I had tickets in the reserved section. I remember there being rumblings that during slayer they were going to take the gate down and rush the stage. The two guys I was with went to the back of the lawn for the Slayer set. I was nervous (I weighed 95 pounds soaking wet), but stayed in my seat. Slayer came on, and they actually did get part of the gate down, but no one made it as far up as I was. I had a decent seat.
Slayer was definitely the band of the night. I remember Megadeth was good too....a far cry for what they became live.
But AIC did NOT get over with the crowd. They would finish a song and it was all middle fingers and 'fuck you' chants. Layne singled someone out up front who wasn't into their music and told the guy he could blow him backstage. Said he'd have to blow some security guards first, but he'd still the the BJ. The guy up front basically just ignored him and kept talking to his girl. It was an embarrassing set for AIC.
The irony being that about 6 months later, everyone giving the finger was probably a new fan.
It was a great tour though.

Except I watched part of Man in the Box after, and the crowd there was WAY more into it then at the show I was at. It was dead during their set. Both when they were playing and when Layne was talking in-between songs.

Dang, I forgot about that place. I saw Motley Crue down there, some other ones as well. I remember it being pretty out of control & not much security during the concerts.kingbrian74 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2024 10:04 am I saw this tour at Lake Compounce in Bristol, CT.....an amusement park that used to have concerts (saw the Poison/Lita Ford/Britny Fox show there as well).

I caught the June 6th Omaha date. Alice In Chains we’re “booed” badly. In all honesty, they were pretty boring. Next up, Anthrax. They had the biggest pit interaction. The pit during ‘got the time’ was insane. Megadeth had the middle and best slot. They were firing on all cylinders. Very tight. Top notch musicianship. Slayer went on last. Really can’t remember too much. Nothing really stood out. Great show none the less.

I only saw the two shows there…..but the GA crowd did knock down part of the gate during Slayer….so probably not the best security.tooth wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2024 10:53 amDang, I forgot about that place. I think where the stage was is a water park now.
But they had alot of the big tours stop there back in the day.
And that is where the whole Milli Vanilli scandle started when the track started skipping during their ‘live’ performance.
Re: Clash of the Titans tour (90-91)
Trivia: the fourth band on the bill was supposed to be Death Angel, not AIC. But DA were in a bus accident and drummer Andy Galeon almost died. The band's label, Geffen, said get a replacement and get back on the road. DA said fuck that and were promptly dropped from the tour and the label. Their loyalty came at a massive price.

May 25 1991 at the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa. Drew at least 15,000. Still the biggest pit I ever saw was on the massive steep sloped lawn during Angel Of Death with people piling up at the bottom.
Liked the 1990 Euro lineup better which was Slayer, Megadeth, Testament and Suicidal Tendencies.

Re: Clash of the Titans tour (90-91)
Saw this at CNE Grandstand with Slayer closing the show. The crowd HATED that there were chairs on the floor section so they passed them all up to the front and over the rail so there could be a pit up front.
I missed AIC, was still in the parking lot drinking etc.
Then it was Anthrax followed by Megadeth.
All three bands were great.
Seemed like only 10,000 or less were there in a 20,000 seat outdoor venue.
