July 24th Motley Crue - North Dakota State Fair

Perfect hot weather summer night for Motley Crue at the North Dakota State fair. Crowd was in the range of 12,000 people and as the classic hits rolled through the evening ,crowd seemed to be eating it up more and more. Full disclosure, Vince was rough at the beginning of the show and quite flat during the first 3 to 4 songs. That is not news to me or anyone else. John 5was very well received on his side of the stage in crowd didn’t show any inclination of missing Mick Mars.

Motley‘s latest track released to radio was beyond tracked and mimicked in front of the paying crowd. It was a mess of blaring noise with buried lead vocals, by design.

Most impressive was Tommy Lee. Still a complete animal behind the kid. Lots of live camera shots in his direction during the show.

As I stated earlier, the hot weather made for a perfect setting and it was worth the ticket price to watch the show.

Pantera killed as usual. Metallica killed as usual. Night 2 was better for Metallica imo. Ice Nine Kills got rained out Night 2 which was also a plus.

Foo Fighters
Great America Ball Park
Cincinnati, OH

The last time Foo Fighters were in Cincinnati it was down the street at the then brand new Andrew Brady Music Hall (outdoor). Now they were in a sold out MLB stadium. Weird being that non-intimate with a band you've seen in places like Hara Arena, The Newport Music Hall, and Brady but there is also something to be said for seeing 38,000 people going nuts for Foo as opposed to 6,000. Some front men can't handle it. Dave was born for it. Pat Smear is my favorite Foo though.

Dwarves, New Cross Inn, 31 July
The New Cross Inn is a classic London pub with huge windows onto the street. Not the usual scenario for a gig venue.
First up were local street punk band The Morons. Crap name, decent songs although street punk isn't my thing. The drummer also did the vocals.
Next, old-school LA punks Spider. A new-ish band but an old sound from veteran scenesters. Another crap band name but the music was fast and catchy. I bought their 7" after. First one I've bought in maybe a decade.
Dwarves - 5th time I've seen them, and possibly the best. 45 minutes, +20 songs, minimal banter, Nick "QOTSA" Oliveri on bass and some vocals. Wham, bam, goodnight. A good night.

Enslaved @ La Machine (Paris, March 13th 2024)
Executive summary:
- Got there 20 minutes before Enslaved played
- Random dude outside sold me a cheap ticket, yay.
- Enslaved were ok... I've only listened to their first 2 albums once or twice (the black metal ones with Trym on drums, before he left for Emperor) and a bit of the last album (placed high on Metal-Archives poll; the black metal parts are nifty, the clear vocal parts are not). Good musicians, but I just couldn't get into it... Maybe the prog elements are too much for me, not enough black metal thrashing. And NO corpsepaint
- Venue was 3/4 packed, lots of girls, they dig that viking/atmospheric metal stuff.
- *ech* was in the venue next door (Backstage by the Mill) which litterally shares a wall with the venue I was in. We had an official EE get-together which lasted a good 3-minutes. Unfortunately, *ech* had a financial emergency to tend to, so there's no post-show debauchery to report.

Last concert I went to was KISS last year. 5th and final time seeing them. First 3 times were great. Final 2 times they were just decent. Age finally catching up to them. Crowd seemed lackluster compared to previous tours. Maybe I was just more sober this time. Or maybe the energy of the band rubbed off on the audience. Highlight of the show for me was makin love. But that went over like a lead balloon for most of the audience.

Nickelback played an outdoor festival here last night

Drove by and listened to half a song. Sounded ok I guess, loud as fuck though. Read afterwards that the lineups for the port-a-potties were so long that most people just pissed on the closest tree they could find, or wherever they they felt like. Two chicks got into a fight when one of them popped a squat in the pit in front of the stage and accidentally sprayed the back of the other chick's legs. Typical Nickelback crowd I guess.

Pitbull is playing tonight. Not going to that show either

mentioned in another thread, but I went to that Totally Tubular festival in Cincy a couple of weeks ago. New Wave was my 80s guilty pleasure but not my preferred genre. It was fun and light-hearted. A bunch of old MTV one or two or three hit wonders of the day with a 50-something crowd - some dressed in 80s garb.

The Plimsouls - no clue who they are.
Tommy Tutone - only knew Jenny 867-5309
Bow Wow Wow - dug this Adam and the Ants spinoff. Love the tribal beats.
Wang Chung - only the main two guys plus a couple of younger hired hands. Several popular songs from the day. Live and Die in LA, song from Breakfast Club when they're running the halls, Everybody Have Fun Tonight, Dance Hall Days.
Men Without Hats - best band of the night.
Thompson Twins - more popular songs than I remembered from the day. Only the male lead singer remains, but it was fun.
Modern English - Melt w You was all I knew. Sounded good, but the lead guy was kind of a wanker.
Thomas Dolby is a one-man band. I get it. He's the doctor (as they call him), a professor at Johns Hopkins. We left after his opening cover of Blue Monday.

The Rolling Stones at SoFi Stadium.
They were fantastic! They always are.
Sure they're old, but they have a lot of back up, so they still sound great.
Also, SoFi Stadium has kicked it up a notch! I saw The Stones there in 2021, and the show was fine, but anywhere outside, like the bar or the bathroom, you couldn't hear shit!
It might have just been where our seats were this time, but the chairs were super comfy, I don't remember that in 2021. Not that we sat a lot...
The best thing is, they seem to be totally cool with the hot dog vendors, booze vendors (yes, that's new!), anything but bootleg shirts on the property. And they were all out on the street anyway.
It was a million times better that 2021, and I don't hate SoFi that much anymore.

Saw Creed on Wednesday at PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ. Parking was free, which was nice. Didn’t like any of the shirts, but bought 2 outside for $20. We missed Finger Eleven, and most of Three Doors Down (no loss, AFAIC), but did hear the big songs from them. Creed was absolutely amazing, and sounded just as good, maybe even better, than they did 25+ years ago. I was genuinely impressed, and very much enjoyed it.

Megadeth - Dave was in a good mood, smiling and joking with the crowd, and I even saw him bounce a couple times. Missed angry Dave a little. Band was tight and crowd was high energy (Bay Area thrash crowds always good). Forgot how good Sweating Bullets is live. Not sure how well the drummer fits in - the showy style along with the fan blowing the unkempt blond hair - looked like Robert Sweet filling in behind the kit

Hot take: catalog not as strong overall, but more fun than Metallica at Sofi

Willie Nelson, Hollywood Bowl 7/31

Wayyy better than I expected. Minimal instrumentation~Willie, his kid and another guy on acoustic guitars, minimal drumset, standup bass and a harmonica/percussionist.

A few songs acknowledging his age, like: "Roll me up and smoke me when I die" and "If I die when I'm high, I'll be halfway to heaven (or I'll have a long way to fall)" came across as a celebration of age and acceptance of the inevitable instead of being maudlin.

Willie sings whatever the fuck he wants HOWever the fuck he wants, but he is 100% in control and when he does choose to hit something strong, his voice still has that flinty edge that gets right at your heart. I was also amazed at just how spot-on his pitch is even at 90.

Gaslight anthem. Weird choice to have them play the Greek, I’ve been seeing Brian and Benny’s bands since the vfw days in NJ, 1998ish when I was in middle school. Got a ticket for $3 on stubhub. Joyce manor is one of my favorite bands and I’ve seen them sell out places like the palladium but it’s a weird billing. JM fans aren’t shelling out the money and the hassle to see them at a seated place like the Greek. GA has zero energy compared to a decade ago and Brian is unrecognizable weight wise..I don’t want to talk trash if it’s a health issue. Band needs to be inside unless it’s a festival. This could have sold out the palladium easily or possibly two nights instead of the Greek on a Tuesday. Maybe it’s a clause thing where the Greek needed the show. Thanks to the poster who recommended the shuttle, I walked over and took that instead of parking or having my gf drop me off.



I’m heading out on tour Friday for a month if any sludgers want some free drinks. It’s a major label guy, sounds like Bieber/post malone. I’ll put you on the list +1, just message me.

8/9 Midge Ure/City Winery Boston

Midge is touring his "Band in a Box", which is Midge on guitar/vocals/synths & another guy doing everything else. It was mostly backing synth tracks with a drum machine as Midge was highlighting the synth pop songs. Dancing with Tears in My Eyes, Reap the Wild Wind, Lament all sounded excellent. Best part of the whole night, Midge on at 7:30, off at 9:10 & me walking into my house at 9:35!

Hurricane at the Whisky: 8/10/24

I liked their '85 EP, Take What You Want and some of Living Over the Edge. There was only one original member (Tony Cavazo), but he somehow roped brother Carlos into playing, so I thought it could be fun.

It was pretty brutal. They were lucky if there were 200 people by the time they went on (11:40p) and they barely touched their older, more well-known stuff. They started off with two songs from a new album that came out in 2023, some songs from Snow, a Carlos and his brother band from the late 70's / early 80's that I never heard a song from, then a hit, then more new songs, a way too long drum solo and then did a bunch of Quiet Riot songs. They did Wild and the Young, Run for Cover, Don't Want to Let You Go, Cum on Feel the Noize and Metal Health. The QR songs were decent but I've seen tribute bands get bigger pops for COFTN & Metal Health.

They played only two recognizable Hurricane songs I'm On To You and Living Over the Edge and left some of the best stuff from the EP, Take Me In Your Arms, Take What You Want and Hurricane off the setlist. And to top it off, no encore. Although it didn't matter at that point because there was probably only 75 people left.

3 out of 10, saving grace was Run for Cover, Don't Want to Let You Go and no lines for bar or bathroom.

Megadeth have the catalog to create a 14-16 song setlist that could kill but Dave really needs to completely reset what he thinks the must play staples are. Someone needs to tell him that "Trust" and "A Toute Le Monde" and "Angry Again" aren't necessary and why is he still playing "Dread and the Fugitive Mind?"

I saw Pulp yesterday for the first time, at a festival here in Helsinki. The rest of the festival was mostly hipster crap, though there was a good Canadian band called Alvvays, which played sort of 90's shoegaze (Lush/Ride/MBV). Pulp headlined the festival and had three extra musicians (fiddle, keyboards, percussion, guitar etc.) and a new bassist instead of Steve Mackey (R.I.P.). Jarvis Cocker is a great frontman and he played more guitar than expected too. His hair was unwashed and wild, almost Robert Smith-like. Richard Hawley (British soloartist and songwriter) was guesting on three songs. They played the usual hits (Common People, Disco 2000 etc.) and some rarer stuff like O.U. and Pink Glove and a new song called A Sunset. After listening to them for over 30 years, it was nice to finally see them live.

I'm seeing them next month at Hollywood forever cemetery (Which is a very cool venure. I saw Father John Misty there year before last). Saw them the last time they did the states liiiike 12-13 years ago.

Jarvis is hard to explain to people. I am like: "He is a David Lee Roth-level frontman (prime era) crossed with a stick-insect librarian."

Deep Purple at Gröna Lund, Stockholm, Aug 6th

Deep Purple back at the amusement park they played 6-7 years ago and the first thing I notice is that the crowd is much, much bigger. Before they started the park closed its doors, also to season ticket holders, something that rarely happens at concerts, maybe once or twice a year out of over 50. In the years before the pandemic, it was artists like Elton John, Alice Cooper and Marilyn Manson, so a way past their prime, Blackmore-less Deep Purple was unexpected.

Next thing, when they start playing there was a different feel, a lot more energy than at the couple of shows I saw since Sweden Rock in 1999 with Steve Morse on guitar. Simon McBride seems to be a really good addition to Purple, and Ian Gillan while not even close to 1987 when I first saw them, or even 1997, both looked and sounded better than last time. The setlist was also a bit of a surprise, skipping some classics and focusing on the new album, Machine Head and In Rock. They only played 3 songs from between 1972 and the new album and it was neither Woman From Tokyo nor Perfect Strangers. We got Anya off the 90s album The Battle Rages On, Uncommon Man from Now What? 2013 and Caught in the Act from their previous album Turning To Crime.

The guys in DP are old, and I heard some fans speculate that this may be their latest album and tour. Don't know where they got that from but if so it would be a good way to end their career, 56 years after their 1968 debut.
