Debatable, Sickie influenced a whole generation with the overhand soloing. The EVH of his decade.

I was a massive fan of George’s until I saw Dokken live. To borrow a line from EVH, George played “like a two year old with a broken thumb.”
So many better guitarists than him. Dokken made me a Metallica fan.

Fixed it for you.
Judging by that abortion disaster of 1988 that is Beast From The East, I’m not so sure. How awful George sounds on that album became a running joke on my school bus at the time. Later, I began to wonder if Erik and Joey weren’t the only 80s guitarists who were ghosted over.

I'd agree about Beast From the East. I remember being excited about it's release, but not only was it horribly recorded (obviously they weren't going to spend a lot as the contract was ending), but also the playing wasn't very good. In recent years, both George and Jeff have discussed how they and Mick were deep into cocaine at the time. Meanwhile, we all know Don's had drinking problems at various times in his career. And it sure sounds like it on that album.Tommy2Tone84 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 16, 2024 8:22 amFixed it for you.

Dokken were an absolute joke of a band live. A real tragedy since they has so much talent, a couple of great albums and some really great songs. I always liked them better than Ratt but I think Ratt was the better band. Eddie and JJ get a lot of shit on here but Twisted Sister ate both bands for lunch as a live act. Dee looked like a clown but he didn’t f*ck around as a frontman. He was on a different level that guys like Don and Stephen. Atleast Stephen was cool. Don blew goats.Van Ailin' wrote: ↑Fri Aug 16, 2024 3:25 pmI'd agree about Beast From the East. Don was an alcoholic and a pill popper from my understanding. I once listened to an interview of his where he was going into depth about his prescription pill addiction while at the same time pointing the finger at his old band mates. Classic Don

The way Don performs now, he either STILL has those issues (would not surprise me) or he was damaged enough from it that he can't really go. I understand him not being able to get to the same notes as before. And after the back surgery, I understand him not moving all that well on stage. What what he could do would be to get right on the music, by rhythmically on time with his vocals, and not slide into each note like a drunken sailor just back from a 2-year tour. And yet . . . He did make a pretty good album last year, at least.Tommy2Tone84 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 17, 2024 6:18 am

I saw them live in 1988, and Don was too low-key for that show, but he sounded pretty good. Saw them again live in 1995 (after their best album, Dysfunctional). He still sounded OK, but you could hear a little of what happens now creeping in. Shadow Life must have been a really bad period because there's almost nothing redeeming about that record.

I saw them live on Shadowlife. It was pathetic and embarrassing. I have no idea why I was ever a fan of that band or at the very least why I was so stupid to keep coming back for more all through the 90s. They are one hairband that was grossly overrated especially given how much talent they had.
Shit, I’d take Kingdom Come over Dokken any day. Atleast Lenny could sing.
