I really dug the title track and Never Know Why...but the songs are way better on Bark at the Moon...this is when all the filler started popping up.

I give it 6 1/2 batheads out of a possible 10.

Don't get this take at all, and it validates my theory that ppl overrate BatM because the title cut slays.

Sin is better than Bark in every way except the song “bark at the moon” is the best song from the 2 records

When Ultimate Sin first came out it was kind of a disappointment, but it's grown on me. I like Bark too, but Ultimate Sin is really a killer record. Jake was unleashed. It's a little polished on the production, but it doesn't bother me.

As for Bark at the Moon, Waiting for Darkness is really strong track too. You're No Different was weak and totally killed the momentum out of the gate. It should have been placed later in the sequencing. Now You See It is a good track as is Rock and Roll Rebel. Side two starts off strong but kind of goes sideways from there. Overall, I've grown to like it all through repeated listening's. Spiders and B Side are gems too.

The Zak years I was out... There are a few Zak tunes that I like but overall, that's where I had to bail.

Diary is still the pinnacle.

Blizzard is good but I've overplayed it and can't listen to it like I used to.

Honestly, save for So Tired, I dig that entire record, not just the title track. Each track really stands out from the next one, whereas on Ultimate Sin, there just isn't enough variety, it's pretty formulaic. And the big hit was stolen from another band!

On Bark, they had something to prove after losing Randy, on Ultimate Sin they seemed to be on autopilot.

Jake moaned at the time because they made him go in and do all the rhythm parts then go in and do all the solos, there wasn’t time to work on each song separately. Aren’t there two songs with “Never” in the title? Silly stuff like that shouldn’t happen.
Didn't they bring Daisley in at the last minute to write lyrics because the new band was struggling to come up with stuff?

It’s a great album. A bit more commercial sounding than the rest of Ozzy’s output, but still heavy enough. Plus, “Shot in the Dark” is one of Ozzy’s all-time best solo tunes, IMO.

He was certainly part of it in some capacity.

My favorite Ozzy record. Brings back a huge nostailgic feeling and memories, so that's part of it, but the songs are good and Ultimate Sin is to Jake E. Lee what Back for the Attack is to George Lynch.

Yes. Never Know Why was originally called We Rock. Then I guess someone told Ozzy that Dio used that title already in 1984

Yeah, Daisley did all lyrics except for Shot in the Dark. He did it for a lump sum (just like he did on the Bark album) to avoid all the hassle about royalties. He says he also co-wrote all the music with Jake except Shot.
He says they ommitted him from the credits on the first 500.000 copies, but he negotiated with Sharon and was credited in the next pressings.

He also did the lyrics for No More Tears, but then the contract kept getting delayed, since he did not want a lump sump this time, but royalties.
He was then informed they would not be using his lyrics and Lemmy did them, again for a lump sum.
Bob then negotiated for a cancelation fee, since he did do the work. He got it, but it was very meagre, like 5K dollars...

The good songs are great, Killer of Giants is a top 5 Ozzy song and SitD and Secret Loser also stand out but the rest is indeed same-sounding. Not bad, but quite bland and boring to listen to. The songwriting is only part of the problem - the mix isn't great and I hate Jake's guitar sound - is he trying to sound like Viv Campbell on the first two Dio albums, or is Viv playing like Jake who was in Dio for a minute before him.

Bob Daisley was a secret loser.

Even as a 12 year old rocker I knew it wasn't as good as BATM & me and all my friends thought SITD was "wimpy".

"Never Know Why" = bad

"We Rock" = worse

"Never Know Why We Rock" = Spinal Tap

The tour may have played a role in crippling the album too... MoP Metallica opened and they were blowing Golden Girls Ozzy off the stage most nights.

This album has been in my life for 38 years, but for the life of me, I can never recall how the track Never goes. When I think of it, I only hear Never Know Why We Rock in my head...lol. Never is actually my favorite song on the album...

It really surprised me to see Ozzy kinda making music that really seemed to make a statement. Kinda a Anti Nuke type of deal. Not a huge ozzy fan, so no idea if he did other albums that made the same kind of statements?? Its a fav album of mine.

Revelation (Mother Earth) on Blizzard of Ozz perhaps? Ozzy's always been a tree hugging hippie at heart, flashing peace signs on stage etc.

Yeah, Bob Daisley probably wrote 90% of the lyrics but the idea and topic was just as probably Ozzy's.

But should he have used the title Rockin' All Nite instead of Lightning Strikes?
