I'm from Argentina and I think he would sell 10 tickets here in a bar, but is he a big thing there in the States? Is what he does considered "country music" (I found his music in the country bins in the record stores)?
Great great lyricist. Maybe the best from the era. He and Kid Rock of course.

Same here just listen to all of his albums as well as drive by truckers. Really wanted to like it but only found a handful of tunes that I liked. Was abit boring for me
Prefer Ryan adams.

He's headlining a festival here this weekend. Never heard of him so checked him out on Spotify.... and some really cool tunes. Maren Morris is opening for him, and I initially thought she was the headliner.
I like a bunch of her stuff, so decided we are gonna check it out, especially if it's a nice night.

He's not just one of the best living lyricists, but he's also a spectacular guitar player with chops for days. To answer your question of genre, he's more 'Americana' than 'country'.

To answer your question about popularity, he plays venues in the 3,000-7,000 range. I live in North Carolina, and when he plays here he often does two nights in a 4,500 theater.

I have been a big fan since first hearing "Never Gonna Change" about 20 years ago. He's one of the best songwriters of this century, and a great musician. He's also written two of the most amazing and beautiful, yet depressing songs, I have ever heard with "Elephant" and "If We Were Vampires."

Sort of. He doesn't sing about his truck and a girl named "Girl " and when he sings about drinking, it doesn't seem so awesome.

Kid Rock is the antimatter universe version of him.

Noted. I though I was being American. Again neither Isbell nor Kid Rock would play for more than 500 people here in Argentina, and Whitesnake, Judas Priest and even the bass player of Creedence Clearwater whatever play for 10,000. We don't like VERY yankee music, I guess.

Isbell albums have such great production. “Southeastern” is great.

Southeastern, Reunions, & Weathervanes are all solid albums, as are the Truckers albums he’s on - Decoration Day, The Dirty South, & A Blessing & A Curse.

While we're at it, I had a "problem" with one of the parts in Elephant that's been bothering me for a week so maybe you can help me solve it (English is not my native language and tho I'm kind of bilingual some "forms or idiomatic expressions fly past me)
The song says: "If I fucked her before she got sick, I'll never hear the end of it"
What does it mean in the context of the song? To "never hear the end of something" for me -maybe I'm wrong- is that she was going to get angry about it and she was going to remaind him about the time he had sex with her, but why? and why "before she got sick"? It would make more sense if he would took "advantage" and try to fuck her after she got sick.... wel Im lost.

Absolutely spot on. I wish I didn't get depressed so much when I listen to some of his songs, but they are real Americana, warts and all. Never Gonna Change was my first inspired song as well. DBT, Isbell, and Nick Cave are my fave songwriters, but wow, are some of their songs a depressing journey.

They weren't boyfriend/girlfriend, but regular friends.
