I don't know what happened to Hip Hop Sludge but this has it all. You can switch a few names around and be describing a random Rock Never Stops show.

EPMD and Big Daddy Kane are definitely two of the biggest 80s hip hop artists. I'm not sure they're big enough to sell out a venue like that one, but I suspect the promoter did a terrible job. Anyway, good on the artists for still trying to entertain such a sparse crowd.

I don't know shit about today's rap, but I know who EPMD and Big Daddy Kane are.

Seeing the artist perform live isn't an important part of Hip Hop the way it is for Rock.
Also, these guys' music hasn't had the staying power of other 80s rap artists (like, say, LL Cool J).
Mix those two together and you get this - a handful of bored old couples that played these songs at their wedding, so they came to check it out.

When I think of old school rap, excuse me, hip hop, I think Ice Cube, Ice-T, Geto Boys, Schooly D, Beasties, NWA, Eazy-E, Too $hort, Snoop Dogg.
What ONE EPMD/BDK song should I check out?
I've never listened to these fuckers. Not surprised no one showed up, they're like the Enuff Z'nuff/Keel of rap, no?!

I'll grant you that EPMD are more underground/niche, but BDK is a bona fide hip-hop LEGEND.

Michele!? Talk about milking a career for 30 years. Be proud if you can collect a check for performing this many years later.

No one remembers or cares about those two artists - sorry. EPMD AND BDK were c level during their peak - they sucked.

Ah...so they WERE C level. At their PEAK. No wonder no one knows them. Or those songs listed above.

EMPD had 4 Gold Albums in a row when it meant something, without “going pop.” Those albums are all considered classics in the genre.
Then they had a comeback after a breakup that was a huge deal in hip-hop. And they went Gold again 5 years later in a new scene. “Da Joint” was a rap hit.
“You Gots to Chill” is considered a hip-hip classic song and their debut album is considered a highlight of rap history.
Fun fact: their biggest pop single (I think it hit #42) was “Crossover” a song that criticized MC Hammer and other pop crossover rappers. The point was they could go Gold and sell shows without a pop hit or trying to target all-white crowds. Most people who know rap history know the line “strictly underground funk, keep the crossover.”
They also pioneered some things like story songs with running sequels. They had the real “Gold Digger” song, Rampage with LL Cool J, they discovered Redman, had Hitsquad/Defsquad. Erik Sermon did a lot of production and had some solo pop success in the early 2000s after Clive Davis signed him to J Records.
So no, I don’t think a group that had Gold Albums from 1988-1997 and had multiple solo charting albums and individual big time production and songwriting and publishing royalties without ever crossing over is comparable to a Z list hair band that has no fans if they didn’t have pop hits.
But yeah they are “niche” because they are a genre act without pop success. Also back then was when you could have everything from AOR to funk and metal and whatever go Gold with no crossover pop hits and all kinds of genres could build real fanbases and careers.

Yep. Some obscure rap act. Can't believe we're discussing D list hip hop. Absurd.

I was about to say he's a badass, but realized I got him confused with Brother Marquis of the awesome old school 2 Live Crew. If these guys had been on the bill the place would have been jam packed!
Check this good shit out, much better than Big Daddy Kane:

Well, I done gone and wasted 15/20 minutes of my precious time listening to those 4 tunes. That shit sounds dated as fuck. No wonder no one showed up at their show.
I also listened to the 3 songs mentioned in that EPMD post: much better, You Gots to Chill sounds like they used the same beatmaker as Ice Cube did on Death Certificate. EPMD isn't perfect though, Ice Cube raps circles around them, more conviction, more attitude, etc.
Maybe I need to check out an EPMD greatest hits set, but these days I'm more into Sexyy Red, her shit is more fun.
Frog lane rules, better music inside of it!

I saw Sexxy Red at the Wiltern last year. Now talk about packed. And the demographics ... Not only was the only white dude over 50, I was the only white male, the only white person, the only person over 30, possibly the only male etc etc. And usually instead of just creeping out all the kids around me some of them seemed to enjoy my presence if you know what I mean.
