Hair Nation

We were debating on here recently whether Van Halen was a hairband or not.

I listen to Hair Nation on a somewhat regular basis and they have been playing more Ozzy solo lately. They have always played Scorpions, Queensryche, KISS, Fastway and DLR Band. If those bands were hairbands or hair metal, then Van Halen most certainly was.

Yes, tons of Ozzy lately.
They have changed the playlists over the last year or so. Still playing the "hits" a millions times a day, but they definitely have expanded the playlist. Songs I have heard over the last few days.

If you Don't Like it - Cinderella
Squeeze Box - Poison
Drive Me Crazy - Ratt
Billy's Got a Gun - Def Leppard
I Just Wanna - Kiss
Sweet Little Sister - Skid Row
Making a Mess - Skid Row
Kittens Got Clawa - Whitesnake
Hellraiser - Ozzy
Social Disease - Bon Jovi
#1 Bad Boy - Poison
Take it Back - Cinderella

Maybe they have played these all along, but I've been painting and have just left hair nation on all day, and have enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

If you came out in the 80s and used hairspray then you'll be considered a hair band. Queensryche was more prog and they didn't make their hair big in 1990. Doesn't matter. They started in the 80s and have a popular slow song.

I listened to Hair Nation for a ton of long drives 2010-2018 and none of those songs are new in the rotation. Any time the free trial works on the radio I listen for a brief stretch and it's still the same. Van Halen was never played on the regular programming, their stuff was always on the Boneyard.

If Ozzy, Scorpions and Dokken were hair metal then so were Queensryche.

It's just a generic term for hard rock and anything heavier that came out in the 80s, yo.

Wow it’s cool they’re playing some different tracks. Maybe I’ll switch to Hair Nation later instead of just NFL Radio! It’s funny when yacht rock channel is played more than Hair Nation in my car!

Someone over there saw the light and finally started playing more variety. I heard Walk in the Shadows and Tokyo Road recently.

I guess we're at the point, where some folks are feeling as if though the term Hair Band or Hair Metal... are basically slurs?

How lame...

They always were used as slurs. The two sayings were always said and meant to be derogatory.

Sure, some have embraced them more recently but it was always meant as an insult. Up until the early 2000s Poison was the only band who really embraced it.

What is your take on Van Halen? Were they a hairband in your opinion.
