Ever have a musician refuse to sign an album for you? Maybe it's their least favorite album, or they hardly played on it. I've heard it happens sometimes with actors being asked to sign DVDs of movies they hate.

I read secondhand the other day that James LaBrie has refused to sign certain albums. I saw a post about their meet and greets in a FB group. Not something I’d do myself but was bored and read the thread. He apparently refused to sign someone’s copy of their first album that he didn’t sing on. Kind of a cunt move I thought. Like I sort of get it, OTOH it’s a paid meet and greet where you can get something signed and who gives a shit? Just sign the thing.

Tyler Bates (guitarist for Manson) wouldn’t sign any albums he didn’t play on when he came out to greet the fans after their show in Maryland.

Who the fuck is James LaBrie?

In a way, I'd understand if the guy wasn't listed on the album or joined the band 5 years after the album was made. It kinda makes the fan look like a poser dumbass for asking. I wonder if Mike Slamer has ever signed copies of Warrant's first album.

He should - he contributed to it a lot more than the guys whose names are on the sleeve.

I went to the official KISS Convention back in 94 and someone handed Eric Singer a record and Eric simply said, "I didn't play on this are you sure you want me to sign it?"

At the end of the day it's ink on cardboard, plastic, or paper and it's worth it determined by whoever owns it.

Unless it's a one of a kind item and not something you are looking to sell, one copy of Lick It Up signed by Eric Singer isn't really a world shaking thing.

James LaBrie is the lead singer of Dream Theater and sung on every album except the first one. Charlie Dominici was the singer of Dream Theater when they recorded the first album When Dream and Day Unite. He left the band shortly after the album was released.

Meanwhile, at the KISS Konvention I went to, the 1st one they did in Burbank, I handed Eric a vinyl Revenge to sign. He looked at it, looked at me, and that tiny fucker walked away without signing it. As you can see, I've let it go.

The whole autograph thing at that first event was a disaster. Hundreds of people just crammed at the front of the stage holding up shit for them to sign. They kept saying "We'll stay here until we've signed everything!" Then after a while, they were like "We have to leave!" I still had a few records I wanted Paul & Gene to sign so I decided, fuck that, and just climbed up on stage to get them to sign. Some obese security dude started pushing me back and I was tripping over cords & speaker monitors. I'm asking him "You're going to shove me? I'm about to trip!" etc... To his credit, Paul saw this and came over. He stopped the fat fuck security guy and asked what I wanted to be signed. He signed. Ahhh, youth. I wouldn't even bother with autographs now.

Anyone stupid enough to ask someone to sign an album they didn't play on deserves to be ridiculed and made fun of.

By other people, sure. On the street if you run into a band member during their private time, sure. Not by the band at a paid meet and greet where you’re told you can get something signed. It’s your job and you’re providing a service at that point. You sign a CD by a different band if that’s what gets handed to you.

Happened to a friend twice with the same album, with very different outcomes. It was Dokken's Shadowlife and both Don and George refused to sign it. Don took one look, said "You paid for this piece of shit?" then gave my friend $10 saying he owed him. He still has the bill lol. When he asked George, the response was a hearty "Fuck off".

Anyone over the age of 13 who wants an autograph or a photo with a grown man….

That's better than getting the signatures.

I brought the Freakshow S/T 2009 CD (which also featured Jeff Labar) to a Quiet Riot show in 2018 and Frankie refused to sign it.

The only time I had problems with a musician refusing to sign an album he was on was Ronnie James Dio. I had a backstage pass for a 1987 Dio show and Ronnie was signing my album stash and making small talk, until he noticed I had two copies of Sabbath's Live Evil. He pulled out both copies, one with my name on it already, pointed to them and asked angrily "For you - and for a friend?" "Yes." "What's his name?". I told him my friend's name and he signed it with a big "To Robert. All the best. You Rock. RJD".

Off topic: some 25 years later, after Dio passed away, this very copy shows up for sale on Tradera. I recognized it right away and dropped the seller a message asking where he got the album. Unfortunately, he wrote back that he bought it at an auction in a package with maybe 50 other albums from the era.

Never really sought autographs behind the venue or at an event. I had a small number over the decades and they're long lost by now.

Just remembered I saw a not too drunk Yngwie throw a bootleg cover across the room shouting "I'm not getting paid for this shit". He signed everything else the fan gave him though and it was a lot.

All this reminds me of when George Harrison was dying and his doctor brought his kid in to play guitar in front of George. Like he needed that. Then the doc asked George to sign the guitar and George was so weak he said he couldn't sign his name. The doc then put a pen in George's hand and guided him in a signature. Anyway the doc got in trouble.

What's worse to me, is hired guns signing records they had ZERO part in writing or recording.

I have had guys playing with Tuff on the road, and I am quick to say, "Don't sign it, if you didn't play on it!"

Nothing more disturbing than a scabs autograph on a record that was recorded before they were in the picture.

Wow. Just shows you that you can be in the biggest band on the planet, and still have more money than God,and it wont necessarily stop you from being fucked with by an asshole on your deathbed.
