5 dead in Madison school shooting, including suspect, 5 wounded
MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) - Police believe a juvenile shooter who killed four people and wounded 5 others was a student at the Madison school where the shooting happened Monday morning.
Multiple police agencies responded to a school shooter at Madison Abundant Life Christian School just before 11 a.m.
Police found multiple victims with gunshot wounds. Officers began administering life-saving efforts to anyone who was wounded.
Seven people were transported to area hospitals. Madison incident command says 5 are dead, including the shooter, and 5 were wounded.
Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said officers located a juvenile they believe was responsible for the shooting. “He was down, deceased,” Barnes said. The chief later corrected that he didn’t know if the shooter was a male or female.
Police never fired their weapons, Barnes said.
Police believe the shooter was a student at the school. Barnes declined to provide any information about the victims.
Abundant Life is a 28-acre campus serving grades kindergarten through 12th grade. According to its website, the school has about 390 students from 200 families.
Our sister station, WMTV 15 News, reports students and parents are being reunited at SSM Health/Dean Clinic.
Officers are still going through the school and vehicles parked around the school to make sure there are no other threats.
Barnes said there are no other threats to Madison schools at this time.
“Today is a sad, sad day not just for our Madison community but for our nation because we have yet another police chief doing a press conference about violence in our community, especially one of the places that’s most sacred,” Barnes said.
“So close to Christmas. Every child in that building is a victim. They will be a victim forever,” Barnes said. “Right now my heart is heavy.”
Governor Evers released a statement Monday afternoon:
I am closely monitoring the incident at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison. We are praying for the kids, educators, and entire Abundant Life school community as we await more information and are grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond.
