I didn't think I could like Rick Beato less...

So, Rick decided, "Hey, someone made this documentary that was somewhat popular", let me shit all over it, because I don't like the name.

Basically, he spends (I assume, I couldn't make it through the whole thing) 10 minutes BITCHING because the name "Yacht Rock" is offensive, and that lumping all of these 70s soft rock songs together is some mortal sin.

Nevermind the fact that literally Toto and Christopher Cross are touring together this year, SPECIFICALLY because they have some of the same fanbase (although, the Men at Work thing is still a bit weird).

And his example of why this is offensive, is because Donald Fagen of Steely Fucking Dan, threw a hissy fit when the producer asked him to be interviewed for the Doc. A guy from Steely Dan, the cringiest, shittiest bunch of wannabe cool, jazzy guys is too good to be in documentary, because he doesn't like the term "yacht rock"? Well, there's a fucking surprise. He was probably huffing his own farts before he picked up the phone.

Fuck never was guys like Rick Beato, and fuck all these shitty musicians who think they're too good for their fans. I hope I never have to hear any of this fucking music ever again.

Except Jimmy Buffett. He was cool. Somehow he's dead and the rest of these fucks are still around to annoy me. There's no justice.

I’ve watched tons of his content and always found him to be a likable guy. He’s super knowledgeable obviously, almost annoyingly so, and an amazing musician, but he seems like a nice enough guy. I never get the hate from some people.

Pretty much my take as well.

I think his interviews are fantastic, his other content is still very good but his interviews are where he shines. He does get a little wax poetic-y on things. Watching him rock out to Toto in that video and talk about how heavy it is was a little funny to me, I'll admit.

I enjoyed the documentary and I also think Beato usually is great.
He just seems annoyed about the term ”yacht rock” in the same way rockers don’t like the term ”hair metal”.
He clearly is aware of the origin of the name ”yacht rock” and the documentary is explaining what artists are lumped together in it. Reminds me of discussions on this board regarding what bands are considered to be ”hair metal” or not.
The documentary praises all musicians as well do Beato. No shitting on the artists in the documentary, quite the opposite.

Beato is great if not a little clickbaity at times. You just really hate Steely Dan it seems.

I found his interviews to be informative and enjoyable. He is a highly knowledgeable individual with a charming personality.

I mean...you're not wrong. That post might have just been some delayed holiday rage on my part, or something.

Beato still kind of annoys me for reasons I can't put my finger on, and I thought he was way out line with that video. But if I'm being honest, it's the same shit that Eddie Trunk complains about as far as "hair metal" is concerned, and I still listen to Trunk. And I suppose it's a somewhat valid complaint, but surely there should be some sort of other "simple" name for that type of music, rather than just call everything "soft rock", right? Doesn't really seem descriptive enough.

I love Steely Dan and part of the package deal is they are insufferably crotchety and elitist.

People seem to love or hate Rick. I’ve been a fan for probably seven or eight years now. The insight he puts out there for music fans is sort of one of a kind. I think it was the video about Andy Wallace’s mixing techniques that did it for me.

But whether people love or hate him, his list of interviews sort of speaks for itself. Brendan O’Brien doesn’t sit down for three hours with just anybody.

No different than those here (or anywhere) that really love and appreciate 80s metal, hearing it referred to it derogatorily as 'Hair Metal' and getting all bent out of shape. (edit to add Zinny said the same..)

That's a good point. Clearly I'm just missing something, which isn't necessarily surprising. :D

Jimmy Buffett was never cool, and Parrotheads were one of most annoying fanbases on the planet.

Never has one artist milked so much out of a shtick and four good songs (all released before 1980).

The Fagan thing might just have been a 'bit' because their manager called back shortly after and negotiated rights to use their music on the doc.

It might have not started out that way, but in the end Yacht Rock is just a way to package and brand the music. And guess what? It's worked great. I dont think any of the bands should be complaining because it's making many of them money and fans.

I was having that same conversation with someone last night. Most of these guys are in their 70s, if they're still alive. They should be glad that they're getting talked about at all in 2024.

I'm not going to defend the Parrotheads, but if you just want some chill music that doesn't go full country, that 70s/80s run of albums is hard to beat.
