It bombed because KISS never gets respect from critics.
If this would have been Michael Buble or Rob Thomas it would be considered one of the Top 10 albums of the year.

Same thing happened to Peter Criss’ solo career

This has nothing to do with critics, and a whole lot to do with trying to sell a third rate attempt at a genre that none of your fans buy on a regular basis. It's a vanity project, they never go well. Peter's career was derailed by a lack of quality songs for him to sing.

Vanity project is a good term. But is it any different than what Rod Stewart did with all the American Songbook albums?
