He's a clever guy. He not only knows how to play well, he knows how to listen well.

I enjoyed this earlier today. I’m willing to bet there are more than a few Police fans who watched this expecting to hate Limp Bizkit and found themselves having to admit those guys can groove.

On that note, Rick Beato seems to be a love-hate around here, but his interview with Stewart is incredible. Maybe the only one I've watched twice and I'm not a Police guy at all.

Agreed. His interview with Andy Summers is pretty great as well.

I hate when drummers hold the stick in their left hand like that

It is weird, I have to admit. I don’t understand how they get more control and power by a sideways wrist action.

That's called the "traditional grip".

From Google: The main advantage of traditional drum grip is its ability to provide a more nuanced touch and subtle dynamics, particularly in jazz drumming, due to the natural turning motion of the wrist and forearm, allowing for a lighter, more sensitive strike on the drums compared to matched grip; this makes it ideal for intricate patterns and delicate playing.

I'm not going to complain about how Copeland holds his drum sticks, the guy is a completely unique and amazing drummer.

I'm a hack, play righty & played traditional grip for years, regardless of material. It feels way more natural when you hit the snare or the hi hats, but I never got comfortable reaching across my body to strike a tom or cymbal.

I watched this video earlier and I remember people saying what an awful and hateful person Stewart is and this video to me says he is not.
Sure he may not like Sting but he still seems like a guy who plays music for fun but sometimes are stuck with people you dont really care for.

Will not write more because TLDR

Traditional grip only exists because the drum set was adapted for jazz from marching drummers who had the snare drum slung from their shoulder on a strap similar to the position of a guitar. It would have been impossible to hit the head at that angle without playing mixed trad grip. Some people learn that way on the drum set because that’s the way it was taught to them but there is no advantage/disadvantage to it in modern drumming other than a feeling of sophistication and superiority over matched grip players, and because Buddy Rich said so.
