One-off at a car show here in Phoenix. He was just here with Satriani on guitar - hard pass there, but this was a small room and my buddies were going so I figured what the fuck.

10 out of 10. Not much of a Van Hagar fan, but the show kicked ass. Sammy and the band rolled out onstage in Ronny Montrose's Thunderbird. Vic played like he had something to prove - it was silly Sammy didn't bring him for the VH tour, because he had Ed's Balance-era tone absolutely nailed to my ears. Mikey is a force of nature and Kenny shits all over Bonham. Great sound, the gig was really cool in that they only had plastic chairs in a flat ballroom, and everyone stood the entire show. Haven't done that seeing a boomer act in God knows how long.

I make fun of Sammy all the time, but respect given where it's due - great set, he and Mikey sang their asses off at 70-something years old.

Well, it would be nice if he had played like that for the last 30 years. And tone is meaningless if you can't actually play the parts correctly, which he's always struggled with.

I don't hate the guy, and he does okay on the Sammy specific songs like I Can't Drive 55, but hearing him to try to scratch out Eddie is...rough.

But maybe Sammy did tell him that Satch might not be available in the future, and that he needed to get his shit together if he was going to step in on a more permanent basis.

Oh yeah, they were filming the gig for AXS, so you guys can probably come back in six months and tell me if he still sucks.

You saying VJ material isn’t beyond Satch’s limits ? Guy sounded like a novice at some of the BOBW shows
