An airplane went down in the Potomac River near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Wednesday, prompting a multi-agency search-and-rescue operation, according to officials.

The Federal Aviation Administration said preliminary information indicates a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet collided in midair with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while on approach to the airport around 9 p.m. local time. The plane departed from Wichita, Kansas.

As of 9:31 PST they have pulled 18 bodies out of the water. Accident has to be on the helicopter no? From the video seems like the helicopter was in or around the plane's flight path, any pilots on this site that can chime in?

Is this the same spot where the jet crashed into the bridge years ago and there is the footage of them lifting passengers out of the icy water via helicopter?

Looks like the plane had its landing lights on, which one would think would be hard to miss. Also read that the control tower asked the Blackhawk twice if he saw the plane and zero response both times.

Reports this morning are now saying the helicopter was actually behind the plane as the plane descended not knowing the helicopter was behind them essentially landing on top of the helicopter? I thought the helicopter to my eyes kind of flew into it as well? I know it's dark in the video but I can't imagine the helicopter got that close to a semi big plane with landing lights on descending at a high rate of speed.

The helicopter was on a training mission in one of the busiest air corridors in the country. Let's wait until all the facts come out, but it sounds like lack of experience might be at play here. Not some purposeful attack like Dumbo above suggested.

Is it possible maybe communications between The Tower and the military helicopter could have been off? I don't know anything about how the military communicates with an airport tower but it seems that the helicopter was in an area they shouldn't have been in.

They were told to maintain visual seperation with the plane, which they did. Problem was, it was the wrong fucking plane. They were also flying at almost double their permitted flight ceiling of 200 feet. Stupid fucking cowboys flew straight into an active flight path and killed a bunch of little kids & their families

Jon Maravilla told Russia’s Sputnik he was not allowed on the flight because his dog was too big to board. He said he ultimately decided to make the 14-hour drive back from Wichita, Kansas, to Washington, D.C. He also mentioned the issue on his personal Instagram account.

He added, "14 hour journey begins."
