Paul and Gene are definitely way too serious and uptight, but Aces drunken babbling would get annoying real quick. It’s funny for a few minutes here and there but dealing with that every day would get old.

Paul is the King of Kringe. The way they put those zoomed fake reaction shots is a lame giveaway that they are attempting to exaggerate every millisecond of dead air. Ace was just trying to cram in some stupid one-liners which I’m sure he learned from the Kringe Twins first-hand. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything more awkward than Gene’s attempt at humor on the Tom Snyder show. Embarrassingly awkward. Crispin Glover throwing a kick at Letterman is a distant 2nd to give some perspective.

Once the internet went mainstream and you could get to all this stuff you barely saw back then, it became clear G&P said the same thing on repeat. Playing devil's advocate, if all four had been screw ups, the band would have imploded in the 70s. Yes, I know that is what many here would have liked.

That was Tom Snyder without the laughs.
Ace was drunk and P&G couldn't control him and were embarrassed by his jokes, which fell flat

You've never worked with an asshole who couldn't do his/her job and it affected you?
Pretend you run a business with three other people and one of those people is an alcoholic and drug addict who can't and won't get his/her shit together and it's having a negative effect on your company.
What you see in that clip is a drunk/addict who doesn't want to be there and is about to cause a serious money issue to KISS Co., who just signed a new, large record contract which stipulated that three original members of the band were necessary for the contract to be valid.
Paul, Gene, and even Eric were annoyed. Ace was and is a fuck up.
