I was listening to Tank the Tech earlier on YouTube and he was talking about working the ADKOT Van Halen tour and the group having some jacked cowboy badass as security.
Which bands in your experience had the most imposing security guys hired?

Led Zeppelin's crew. Violent, angry guys from England - from the manager Peter Grant to their "security" head Richard Cole - with a track record of threatening and/or beating the shit out of people with little or no provocation.
I won't count the Rolling Stones using the Hells Angels at Altamont because it was a one off.

Grant and Cole are the first two I thought of when seeing OP's post. Then maybe Motley's tour security head Fred Saunders who claimed in the
Nothin' But a Good Time book that he beat up the band members late at night while drunk.

The Stones have world class ultra tight security.
I worked local crew on a Stones Bridges To Babylon gig, just for the "experience."
I knew sax player Bobby Keys, so I asked a Stones crew guy if there was any chance I could say hi to Bobby.
The guy told me I'd have a better chance of schmoozing with the President Of The United States than I would getting into a Stones band dressing room.

I came here to post Fred. He was not menacing, he was just that chill dude who gave off "do not fuck with" vibes and just sort of kept shit tight.
...which is funny because he is basically just 6'5" Barry Gibb.

How did you know him? Did you have any contact info like his number or anything to say "Sup Bobby? It's Turner! Let's get high before the show."
Would he have let you in if he heard from you, or did you not know him that well?
I'm sure at some point the band probably doesn't even want to see close friends before the show, but I don't know.

In the mid 80s, when Mick and Keith were feuding and not touring, Bobby played with the Joe Ely Band for a few years. I was the band's stage manager.
We traveled the continent together, shared party favors, played poker and all that other good stuff.
I have plenty of "typical" Bobby stories.
I once watched him pour candle wax into a vent on a hotel room TV. It smoked. Then he called the front desk and demanded a different room with a "working" TV.
Another time, he got a letter sent to him from the IRS. He gave it to me, unopened, asked me to write "deceased" on it, and drop it in a mail box.
And there was the time he started choking a tour bus driver in NYC (while he was driving) because he wouldn't stop to pick up hookers. The sound man had a micro cassette in his pocket and got the entire event on tape.
A raving Bobby was a fairly common event, since he got a bottle of Cuervo or Suaza tequila at every gig.
Here's Bobby and Joe, watching Keith checking to see if he still has a pulse.
