Unfortunately Jon would put Shanks on second git.
————————————————————
Would you be open for Richie possibly rejoining the band, and maybe there being a Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band situation, where it's like, several different guitarists that are all part of the band?
Phil X:
"I always say — the most successful tours are reunion tours. So if John called me tomorrow and said, 'Richie's coming back,' I wouldn't be surprised. I'd be like, 'Okay, cool man. Can I be on second git?'"

Good songs, right?
Solos are a little neutered but they’re good enough.
Phil’s great and can play anything but I can not remember a memorable solo he has written and I’ve heard all of his songs many times … but I can’t remember what I did 10 minutes ago so maybe it’s a me problem.

On what basis did he get the call for Jovi?
I mean he’s a great player and singer and all, but there’s 1000s of them out there. He was pretty unknown and well into his forties at the time no? Did ol’ Jon want an unknown to get more focus on himself?
A Jovi reunion tour would be a total trainwreck at this point, unless they use tapes for Jon. And maybe for Sambora too, he must have lost power and range too seeing he’s into his sixties. Maybe one last cash grab from the soccermoms?

John Shanks and Bobby Bandiera aren't household names either and Jon used them live. Phil X filled in for Richie while he was in rehab before. He was the first one Jon called when Richie didn't show up on the 2013 tour.

I know he filled in but why him to begin with? Was there already a connection with someone?

He’s not unknown in the business, he played for Tommy Lee, Kelly Clarkson, Halestorm, Alice Cooper, etc. … he was a member of Triumph for a minute, he’s in the doc Hired Gun … I’m pretty sure Shanks got him the job in Bon Jovi.
He’s dependable and Jon requires that but Shanks being the asshole he is doesn’t let him play … Phil gets MAYBE 3-4 solos an album, Shanks did the same thing to Richie before he left and was probably a big reason he did leave … Phil’s a good fit during the live shows.

Why would a group of guys in their late 50s and early 60s want to play with some guy in his 20s or 30s, known hotshot or not?

There are a few different drummers in that clip. Tommy is toward the end.

Cause Phil is a phenomenal player, singer and performer with a great personality and very impressive resume. They called him up on short notice once and he left a good impression. Jon kept his number and obviously knew who he was going call if shit fell through again.
