Tool Booed At Their Own Travel Destination Festival
https://www.stereogum.com/2299739/tool- ... eups/news/
I know Tool aren’t a Sludge band but the story itself seems Sludge-worthy.
Basically, they announced a weekend festival in the Dominican Republic where they’d perform two “unique sets”.
Price tag was between $4k-$10k. Night 1 was 90 minutes, a paint-by-numbers set with nothing they hadn’t performed in the past five years. Night 2 was 75 minutes, again no real surprises, and 4 of the 9 songs (45 of the 75 minutes) were repeats from Night 1. The booing during the Night 2 repeat songs is quite audible in the clips I’ve seen.
Totally sleazy, total ripoff, right? Of course. But, also, I don’t understand how any fan of this band hardcore enough to drop thousands of dollars and travel long distance to see it didn’t know to expect the absolute bare-minimum that this band could get away with.
They are one of the least fan-friendly bands on the planet. Maynard is notorious for openly wanting nothing to do with his fans. Their shows rarely go over 100 minutes, and they routinely play sets without songs from their biggest albums. When they go on tour, they swap maybe 2-3 songs for an entire leg.
Also, a warning from the song Hooker With A Penis, now 30 years old, that these folks with too much disposable income failed to heed:
“All you know about me’s what I sold you, dumb fuck. I sold out long before you’d ever even heard my name. I sold my soul to make a record, dipshit, and then you bought one.”
Just sharing with the class here because I think it’s kind of hilarious, like Fyre Festival and Tool fans united.

Good sludge. Thanks for posting.
As I recall KISS did something in Australia where they promised to play deep cuts, but half the set ended up being the concert standards much to a few fans disappointment

Probably deserves its own thread, but how many bands have screwed over paying fans in these smaller countries all over the world.

Tool is about as exciting as Mammoth WVH!
How ironic, they happen to be one of the Spoiled Brat's favorite groups!

Re: Tool Booed At Their Own Travel Destination Festival
Fans on Reddit are complaining that the band has become really lazy and I wonder who in the band that might be.
Most would say Keenan is, but the guy is very prolific. He's a got a ton of stuff keeping him busy. Tool, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle. He always seems to be touring with one of those bands. He's also got his wine company that keeps busy as well.
He doesn't come across as lazy. He did say he can't sing some of the old stuff anymore. Maybe that has something to do with the setlists? Or the fact that they are a very visual band with complex screen graphics accompanying the songs? So there are only so many they could do that aren't in the regular rotation.
Danny Carey just did a King Crimson tour. The amount of crazy drumming in those songs he had to learn is not the type of thing a lazy guy takes on.
Adam Jones does nothing outside of Tool. Maybe he's the lazy one? I don't know.
I think the bassist has one side project, the name of which I can't remember.
The problem with their beach gigs was that there was nothing really all that exclusive about it, other than the price and getting to see the band in front of a smaller crowd.
One of the fans at these gigs is a lawyer. This guy is now going to start a class action lawsuit against the band.

I had free tickets to see them last year. I went and felt like I got ripped off.

Pretty clear Maynard wasn't able to sing back to back nights. And they probably aren't around each other enough these days to remember more than the combined 14 songs.

What does it mean to be called a tool?
When used to describe a person, to be called a "tool" is a derogatory term, implying they are used or manipulated by others, lacking independence or agency, and are perceived as foolish or easily controlled.

Re: Tool Booed At Their Own Travel Destination Festival
That lawsuit might have some teeth to it. Clearly, they were promoting this to be similar to what Metallica just did with the M72 tour, where each night had no repeats.
Granted if they just said "unique", rather than "no repeats", maybe that gives them an out, but what a shitty thing to do to their fans.

Damn, if you're too lazy to actually do 2 sets, it's quite bold to front load the 2nd set with the exact same songs from the night before in almost the exact same order.EzyRider wrote: ↑Wed Mar 12, 2025 1:41 pm

I saw a headline a while back where Keenan called the rest of the band out onstage to get off their asses and finish tracking whatever album they were working on.Lobo wrote: ↑Tue Mar 11, 2025 4:25 pm Fans on Reddit are complaining that the band has become really lazy and I wonder who in the band that might be.

Definitely not him. Think the rest of the guys in general treat it like a side-project/ATM machine.

Re: Tool Booed At Their Own Travel Destination Festival
^^^
Danny, 63, just did the Beat tour learning all those King Crimson songs, and I seriously doubt it was much of a payday compared to his regular gig. I saw a show in September and it was both musically incredible and the most overwhelming male to female ratio I’ve ever seen in any room in my life. But yeah I doubt Danny’s the lazy one.
I don’t necessarily think it’s about anyone being lazy. I think Maynard sometimes just gets off on being a smug prick. He said something like “Was anyone here last night?” after starting off Night 2 with a repeat, knowing full-well that one day passes weren’t available. His dad passed a month or so ago, so I thought maybe that had something to do with it, but then I read he said something like that and I’m back to thinking it was all a deliberate troll.

Re: Tool Booed At Their Own Travel Destination Festival
Danny Carey is one of the most talented drummers working today.
Maynard is not nearly as smart as he presents himself to be. He's smart for a metal singer, but that's damning with faint praise.
Adam Jones is overrated. If he was in another band, he'd be a solid rhythm player.

That should be Tool new gimmick- whenever you go to Tool show you should “boo” after every song. Throughout the show the “boos” get louder. This would make show enjoyable

Tool absolutely sucks, but they are one of those bands that came out at right time where a large percentage of the fan base are guys who grew up on (and would rather listen to) RATT, Poison, Cinderella, etc.), but didn't want to seem "uncool" admitting that........
