Whitesnake - "The Deeper The Love"

Post by Mister Freeze »

I like the song. But the video doesn't sit right with me. Feels desperate. Like, "We need a hit, let's get Tawny back in one of these."

She looks drugged-out, barely awake. Did Marty Callner even direct this one? Her motions were almost poetic in "Here I Go Again." Here... just hanging around with bad hair and nothing to do. Coverdale watching her take a bath is more creepy than steamy.

Chemistry went from 10/10 to 2/10.

Apparently, everyone was over everything to do with Whitesnake by 1989. I saw the arena show in 1990 and it was one of the most depressing shows I had ever seen, with less than 3,000 in attendance. It felt like watching a band's pre-tour dress rehearsal or something. Sad times...

Yeah, desperate is right. The song is okay, but it's so obviously the result of being told "Write another Is This Love or Here I Go Again." It's a mix of both but nowhere near as good as either, and the video is the same.

The sets are cool, but the aura was -10000 compared to 1987. Coverdale looks old, Vai is out of place, and Tawny has her clothes on.

"Now You're Gone"was actually the song that was a blatant re-writing on Here I Go Again with the keyboard intro. It's a great tune if you ask me. It's interesting though becuase it doesn't really have a chorus.

"The Deeper the Love" is one of my personal favorites. It's very adult contemporary and light. The video reminds me a bit of Rod Stewart My Heart Can't Tell You No.

"Fool For Your Loving" I'm surprised to hear all these years later that David did not want to re-record it. It's another one of my favorites.

Sailing Ships was nice for what it is but man...this album was such a huge step down from S/T or even Slide it In!

It was that stupid lame ass song that destroyed the whole album.

The natural order for the singles should have been:

1. Now Your're gone
2. Sweet Lady Luck
3. Sailing Ships

FFYL should have been a rarity, single B-side or extra track of the CD

Now You’re Gone also rips off the melody of The Four Tops Same Old Song. I thought every one of those Whitesnake albums were just dreadful.

Yes it does. But it's a catchy song and should have been the first single of the album.

I’m willing to die on this hill, it’s one of my favorite WS songs. Of course, Tawny was going to be in the video. The song is slick sounding and it has the great, crunchy guitar sound. The drum beat flipping to an up beat in the solo section is killer. Where it charted or why it doesn’t sound like 1983 WS does not matter.

It's "Is This Love"-lite, but it's enjoyable enough. Coverdale had grown tired of the rockstar life by that point anyway and went on hiatus after SOTT, and the music on the album kind of reflected this, didn't it?

"Coverdale grew tired of the rockstar life" = the public grew tired of David Coverdale. Geffen dropped him after SOTT & Coverdale/Page underperformed and he faded into long-haired obscurity.
