Was he clean back in the day?
Always heard about the other guys and booze/heroin.
Was he sober?

He definitely drank and apparently did heroin for a week and quit once he realized he was getting a habit. Same with coke--dabbled but then quit once he thought it was taking hold.

Smoked a lot of weed during the UYI sessions.

I think after that he was on a new age trip and didn't touch anything but cigarettes and champagne and eventually gave the smokes up too.

For sure, man! His personality tells you that. He was erratic, moody, aggressive, had anger management issues, then became super reclusive, then got super fat, you name it...

I can't even listen to Chinese Democracy. The whole record sounds like a nervous breakdown to me. That must be what it's like in his head. Just a million different things going on, paranoia and trembly vocals.

What's your definition of "super fat"?

Dude was both super disciplined and super lucky as far as that goes. He had all sorts of developmental trauma, it’s not often you hear that someone like that could ‘dabble’ with heroin and other hard stuff.

Doesn't answer the broader question, but Tracii said in a recent interview that Axl completely changed into who he is now after a bad/long trip he had when they were close.

While I was not super close with that camp, or around when they were a local band, I heard plenty of drug use was happening throughout the band.

But one thing is clear... is that by the UYI albums, Axl had did a complete 180 on his health, look, etc...

Look at his images during the years 1986-1989... and then between 1990-1993.

He clearly was taking his health, appearance, etc... a bit more serious than he was previously... which also didn't hurt that he had the money to do so.

His teeth, his skin, his body, and the rest... he looked like he was in the gym, taking a bath and brushing his teeth more than the others.

Yeah in 90 and 91 he appeared to be in stunningly good health. But in mid-92-93 he was gaunt and very skinny. Probably because he was running around on stage for 2 hours every night. At the same time in the forward to Robert John's book He said "I don't want to have my picture taken until I get myself healthy again"
He stopped doing costume changes during live performances.
When I saw his 1992 MTV Awards interview with Tabitha Soren, I felt something was wrong. He was so skinny. But it probably was just the lighting and the fact that he sweated pounds off every night
