How great was Gary Moore? Just getting into him and learning some licks. Guy was a beast, for me to bend the hell out of the strings like Gary I get a hole in my fingers so intense.

Those early 80s albums are criminally underrated and underappreciated.

Gary Moore is among my most frequently listened to guitarists, and I consider him and Jeff Beck to be in the highest echelon of players.

My favorite guitarist. When I heard his cover of “Shapes of Things” it blew me away. A PERFECT guitar solo. I’m not really into the blues stuff, but Corridors of Power and Victims of the Future are a master class in amazing guitar solos. Gary could shred, but had perfect phrasing and a great melodic sense. He was SO good at the hard rock/metal stuff. His songs were good too, but unfortunately his voice and face weren’t really front-man material.

Listen to the chorus of “I’m always gonna love you” and tell me that isn’t “wrecking ball”.

He’s awesome. My favourite style of player, heavy handed and aggressive, blood and guts, but also a great jazz touch when he wanted to. He wasn’t just a speed demon shredder although he could play fast as lightning, and none of that mechanical typewriter kind of tapping stuff. Very inventive solos and phrasing. His solo on Shapes of Things is a primo example of his more metal style of soloing. He was one of the best ever.

Slash I believe is the best, or at least my all-time favorite guitar player, but he must have got some stuff from Mr. Moore. Plays with such passion like my favorite players: Slash, Hendrix, SRV, Page etc... throw a sludge guy in there, Warren D is a killer

Ace’s contemporaries were the likes of Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore, Brian May, Michael Schenker, etc.

If you know absolutely nothing about phrasing or what a solo in a song is supposed to be. Funny that you didn't mention Page, Clapton or pretty much every other blues-based RnR guitarist which is 95% of what was being done in Ace's day only without bis flash and/or ballz.

I like Kiss and Ace and would say he was a very good guitar player in the 70s but Slash is on another level, Ace has his standard 5 licks, at least at this point and once again I dig him. If Slash and him did a guitar duel with a backing band let's just say it would get ugly fast, Slash would take his foot off the pedal as to not embarrass Space Ace.

That's because I'm not talking about a "guitar battle". Ace did those silly "solo" spots just to smoke the guitar on stage. His in-song SOLOs were perfection. Slash was just om 1 (arguably 3) very, very popular albums. He's bar band level, IMO. Nothing special at all and I can't stand his note choices on most of the stuff (when he actually hits the notes while trying to pose for a Circus Magazine pin-up shot).

I'm not familiar with Gary's playing but I remember being stunned at the amount of alcohol he consumed the last day of his life. It was beyond John Bonham drunk. Probably beyond Steve Clark lying in the gutter in Minneapolis drunk. Those Irish guys don't fuck around.

Glenn Hughes (by then sober) tried to warn about this in an interview in Classic Rock Magazine where he was asked about visiting with Gary the year prior. I felt like the writer was trying to push a connection, probably for a Black Country Communion-type project. Perhaps the writer also knew what was going on with Gary and hoped that Glenn might bring him to AA. I only remember Glenn's comment being something about Gary and a pub, and the way it came out, it felt like a warning. I remember even thinking that at the time, and Gary's production in those last 10-15 years was also clearly of lower quality. I kept trying the albums, but I just got less and less interested. Turns out that "warning light" was correct. But he did so much fantastic work.

IMO Ol' Gary's problem was that he couldn't figure out who he was... his early 80s hard rock didn't stick, so he went synth heavy, then back to rock/AoR, then he was a 2nd-rate SRV for awhile... great player with brilliant moments, but just couldn't catch fire commercially.
