I will catch flack for this but I can't stand SRV, his playing, his tone, his voice. e the way he rakes the strings when he strummed. etc. I tried. I tried to like his playing. Does nothing for me. He was obviously a master at his craft. just not my flavor.

Well you have to like Strats and you have to like blooze or you ain't gonna like SRV.

AFA comparing them, I will say that I prefer SRVs cut-rate Jimi imitation to Gary's cut-rate SRV imitation. As rock players, they're two totally different cats and both were great in their own right. If respect = dollars, Gary would've died a millionaire. As discussed elsewhere, he just couldn't find the right formula to get his talent across to a larger audience. His blues period was as close as he got, but IMO that wasn't the "real" Gary. He was a badass rock player who could hold his own with any of the shredders of the day.

I'll go one further. If he hadn't been so smitten by his teenage girlfriend he could have taken a damn limo like a civilized person.

Comparing Moore’s British hard rock output with SRV’s Texas blues seems pointless, and comparing their blues output is a landslide for SRV.

Moore was an amazing player, and Still Got The Blues was a big album for me, but it’s just all too smooth and predictable.

Gary nailed the blues, but he wasn't a bluesman. He was fuckin Irish rocker.

Gary's blues is like listening to Richie Kotzen's blues stuff - it's just an imitation. Usually a damn good one, but there moments where Gary goes full metal shredder over his BS blues songs and it sounds silly.

Count me as another guy who can't stand SRV. Just not my thing. But Pride and Joy destroys Moore entire blues catalog. It's the real thing.

For blues, Stevie Ray. He had that single-coil sound that changed the tone when he bent strings down solid. Riviera Paradise. Couldn't Stand the Weather. Many more classics. As a blues player, he had more range than did Gary.

But overall, for hearing the albums? I prefer Gary and like him a bit better in hard rock or Irish mode than I do SRV's blues.

I was already a huge fan, but the fact that you two dolts don't like him makes me love him all the more.

He’s a great player, I respect him, It just gets old really fast.
All blues do to me.
I’d rather slit my asscheeks with a razor and sit in a bowl of Gin, than listen to 3 hrs of 1-4-5

Both great obviously. I guess it's more a matter of what style you prefer. I get a little tired of SRV channeling Hendrix' blues rock after a while, and prefer Gary's rock style a bit more. But I don't know that you could say one is better than the other.

Both are amazing players.

As a kid I was really into SRV's blues style and was lucky to see him live many times, including his final Alpine Valley performance.

No, he's better than that. He's blues for people who like Peter Green and early Eric Clapton.

i have a friend in real life that is a SRV clone, plays and looks just like him. even has his image tattooed on him. He was in one of the biggest SRV tribute acts in Texas for a while. I told him how I felt about SRV and he said the same thing about Randy Rhoads..lol he couldn't stand his playing. Its all about what taste you have or don't have.. I give SRV credit because he is a master at it but I only enjoy his playing with Bowie.. The rest is Meh..

Okay, I’m gonna disagree on the Peter Green and early Clapton…but I’ll change poison to guys who think slash is a blues player.

I've never heard anyone call Slash a blues player. Try again. Gary is more like an early incarnation of Joe Bonamassa (who is really good but also isn't a blues-only guy).

Ummm…his new album was a “blues”album and his tour was a “blues” tour.

So? He's not only a blues guy. Black Country Communion (5 albums in) is a rock band. And a good one. I feel like his Les Paul tone and where he intersects blues to rock is quite a bit influenced by what Gary Moore did.

Is there a guitarist that Bonermassive didn't rip off? He has no actual style whatsoever.

Yes. I'd say he has not ripped off:

Michael Hedges
Chet Atkins
Yngwie Malmsteen
Tony Rice
Johnny Marr
Tommy Emmanuel
George Lynch
Richie Kotzen
John Petrucci
Andy Summers
Adrian Belew
Dave Mustaine
Brad Gillis

and many many many more. But maybe, just maybe a little, moore.

I owned several Moore releases. I had his masterpiece, Victims of the Future, on cassette.

Never owned a SRV release. Never will. Not that he's not good. I just don't like what he plays.
