That's what I use for about 90% of my KISS stuff. It's gotten LOTS better in the last couple of years. Each model is better at certain stuff so you need to experiment with them all for the best results depending on the instruments. It's my go-to for most stems splitting if I don't need to change or tweak notes. For that I use RipX

Do you think it does a better job than RipX of creating the stems? I used to use Steinberg's SpectraLayers, but then I found RipX and really like it.

When you think about what those programs are doing it really is amazing.

My main entertainment these days is creating Stems for pretty much all my music. Then taking the guitar out of each song. Then get a guitar TAB program like Guitar Pro or my favorite ToneLib Jam and syncing up the scrolling TAB with the guitar-less tracks and playing along. Sometimes it's a little challenging to sync a song that the guitar has been subtracted from to match up with the TAB for the guitar part that is no longer there, but it's fun.

It really depends on the recording and the instruments you are going after. I always end up using LALAL for drums. The kick/snare/percussion split sounds like a great idea, but it won’t “share” sounds, so you usually end up with drop-outs between tracks where it assigns the sound to one or the other. I always end up putting them back together and rendering the whole kit anyway. LALAL does a much better job with bass also when you have it playing in unison with guitars. LALAL also gives you a great acoustic guitar option instead of just “other” like RipX.

LALAL is way better than it used to be. I almost never use the model “3” which is all there was when I started messing with it. 5 is really great for most stuff but 4 is still better for some. The nice thing about LALAL is that you can do a short preview before you do a full split and use minutes. I will usually pull the track up in 3 or 4 model options and see which one sounds best and go with that. It also has the deep extract option and deverbing.

It sounds like you are using it more like a learning tool, so both will do a good job of just removing guitars or whatever.

I am usually separating stuff of widely varying quality and often use multiple passes and even both apps and edit the best sounding parts together.
