I would guessed the hatred for Stryper was due to the mediocre songwriting, or his annoying/sappy vocal style, but hatred of God works too.......

I've come to the conclusion that Michael Sweet is a moron if he actually thinks that.

Are there people out there that either disagree with their religious themes or Christianity in general, and hate them because of that? Sure.

But, I'm pretty sure if you did a poll of 100 people that didn't like Stryper, that would be MAYBE 10 percent of the people that are bigoted in that way. Then you'd find that 5 percent of them didn't like them because they thought it was stupid that Robert Sweet drummed sideways.

Everyone else just thought their music wasn't good, like normal people.

I listen to more than a few bands/artists who, on occasion, sing about their imaginary sky-goblin friend. Doesn't bother me if the music is good. What does bother me about Stryper though is that Michael Sweet sounds like Dennis De Young with his nuts in a vise on everything I've ever heard from them. Unlistenable shit.

This seems to be the final step for people who get famous through religious means. Whether it's some televangelist or TV show host or in this case, musician.

I dunno. They could be an acquired taste. I don't find their tunes particularly melodic or catchy with hooks.

In fact, Sweet - who seems like a good guy who's been thru a lot - took some really tasty guitar licks from Tracii Guns and kinda oversung them on their SunBomb albums. Cool riffs, but the vocals just didn't jive.

My hatred of Stryper fall squarely on Michael's oversinging in his high pitched voice. It has nothing to do with hating God.

This is my main issue. I’ve given them a chance, but every song sounds the exact same. Generic metal songs with bad production, no hooks and no interesting riffs or melodies.

There’s a reason their first 3 or 4 albums did well. They had some good songs amongst all the filler

I remember an interview from a couple years ago where he said the bible was going to be cancelled. Here's the deal, your image is going to turn people off. some of us grew up in religious households and couldn't wait to get out from under it and walked away as soon as we could and have absolutely no interest in anything god related, but I guess it's easier to think of us as haters. Keep on crying about Slayer and Satan and everything else you think kept you from being a multi platinum band, but the reality is most Metal fans don't hate you, they're indifferent.

I think most people either like or ignore this band. They aren't exactly "hate-able". Decent enough (if vanilla) music and good players. Technically "good" vocals. I never really liked their stuff at all, but that's just a matter of taste. If I want some pseudo-Christina metal, I'll take old TROUBLE any day of the week.

However, I DO think that the fact that they used the Christian thing for their entire schtick led some people to especially DISLIKE them more than if they were just another '80s rock/metal band with no real image. Some people definitely shit on anything related to Christianity or "the church" so he isn't completely wrong about that, but I don't believe it is nearly as personal as he seems to think it is.

It's a double-edge sword. Stryper built their entire career off of their Christian connection but that's gonna also bring another level of hate from some people.

As much as Dave Mustaine and Blackie were known to be assholes since forever, once they became "Christian" they suddenly got way more hate over things that had nothing to do with their music or anything else.

As a militant atheist, I have no problem with bands who have Xtian themes. In fact two of my absolute faves fall into that category - King's X and a pop-punk band called Sense Field. Cartoon satanism (e.g. Venom) is fine too. What I can't abide is metal songs that are basically a church sermon. If I wanted that, I'd listen to gospel: The music is better, the musicians and singers generally more talented, and they don't have goofy costumes like Stryoer.

I came to the conclusion that Michael Sweet was a piece of shit when he advocated for Trump.
