When you lost interest in a favorite band

Post by Rocker4Real »

Was there a moment when you stopped following one of your favorite bands? What happened? Did they release a horrible album? Did a member say something stupid or commit a crime?

Usually they changed their sound, and it was usually to a more commercial sound.

Sometimes my tastes evolved and I didn't quite get the same enjoyment out of that sound anymore.

Releasing bad music.

Was a huge Duran Duran fan. Could not wait for their newest release which at the time was Seven and the Ragged Tiger. And it was awful, just awful.

Kinda lost all interest after that.

From 5th grade in 1976 or 77, I jumped on the KISS bandwagon. As far as I was concerned, no other bands mattered. That lasted until 1998 when my interest declined. By Y2K, I did a 180. It's fun to rag on them on Sludge, but aside from maybe Kulick's deep cuts band with Kerns, KISS, to me, became a joke. I haven't purposely listened to them in 20 years, unless someone posts a clip of something going wrong during a live show. I can't name another band where I've lost total interest.

In many cases, I've done the opposite. An example would be Men At Work. Liked the hits in the 80s, but nothing more. Now I appreciate entirely what a great singer-songwriter and storyteller Colin Hay is.

Metallica with St. Anger. Were my favourite/one of my favourite bands for about 4 years or so. After that release, my interest went almost instantly. Now they would not make my top 75 favourite bands. And I can only stomach Ride the Lightning and a few other songs from the 80s at best. And James Hetfield is a humourless twat.

Grew up in NJ and was a Bon Jovi nutswinger. I was completely done when These Days came out though.

Pretty much if they are successful. They ALL get too commercial. The list is endless....

Van Halen when Balance came out. Still liked them but was tired of the poppy love song shit and preferred to hear the other stuff on the album.

First single to radio was them telling me about what love can do. And then the next single was telling me how they can’t stop loving me.

Total updated REO Speedwagon shit was how I felt.

I was all in on Queensryche from the first time I saw/heard Take Hold of the Flame on Night Flight. Fast forward, I remember buying Promsed Land, being on the fence about it & skipping the tour. I didn't follow them again until Operation Mindcrime II & the subsequent tour, which they did both records back to back. I liked OM II & the follow up as well, Dedicated to Chaos. The shows at that time were cool as they were at smaller venues. Then the band imploded & I lost interest, again. I've seen Todd Ryche once, when they opened for the Scorpions, but I've yet to see Vestryche. Geoff is coming around in October & I have it on the calendar. If I do go, that will surely be it for me & Queensryche.

I missed being offended by your post by 1 year. For real though between that TV movie and then Dynasty the fandom was on its last legs for me.

Still have my original VH Women and Children First and AC/DC Back in Black albums. Never bought Unmasked.

It’s amazing I like Green Jello more now than in 1993
What’s better than a roadtrip to go see Green Jello

When Jon Bon Jovi started to look like my grandparents growing up..Grandpa Jovi ..pass
Jani Lane and Bret Michaels should form a band called "Nelson II"

Mostly after a steep dropoff from one album to another.

Queensryche - PL to HITNF
Metallica - Load to ReLoad
Leppard - Hysteria to Adrenalize
Priest - Turbo to Ram It Down.

The only of those bands that somewhat recovered was Priest, Firepower and Invincible Shield are better than anything they did since Turbo.
The others.... Queensryche and Leppard's s/t albums and Metallicas Hardwired to Self Destruct are decent but not even close to their classic era.

Metallica is an interesting example as people have debated exactly when they sold out. Is Load more of a sell out than the Black Album? At least St. Anger had more thrash elements.

Motley Crue. Not exactly sure when it started but when Vince started singing every third word to the songs. I have a low tolerance for laziness.

I don't really care about bands selling out as long as it is good. St. Anger was such a disappointment.

Motley was definitely one of my favs but all the garbage thru the years has lessened by fandom with them
Loved Bon Jovi & even the post hairband albums but once Richie left, not a single good song so they've dropped hard
Ratt was a huge band for me in 80s & all their infighting has really dropped them for me
Warrant...was a huge Jani era fan...HUGE. The way they treated him on the way out (he wasnt a saint obviously) & just decided to carry on with HIS music while constantly ripping him in media.......very so so on them now.

Motley. Loved the first two records, but the third is some bullshit that destroyed all of the goodwill I had for them.

Really started even before the album, when I saw the world premiere of Smokin' In the Boys' room. By the end, I was no longer a fan.

They went from cool to goofy in 3 goddam minutes.

What? So "Rio" was your jam, but "Union of the Snake" was a bridge too far?

Loved Judas Priest from the time I heard British Steel as a kid right up to Defenders of the Faith. A lot was made at the time about Priest and Iron Maiden embracing the latest technology with keyboards and guitar synths so I was looking forward to hearing what they would come up with on their new records. Maiden released one of their best albums in Somewhere In Time but Priest dropped a steaming pile of dogshit with Turbo. Laughably bad record, horrible band image. I never cared for them or bought any of their new albums afterwards. As the late, great Iron Sheik would say...fuck the Turbo forever!

Prefab Sprout is my favourite band, but I was staring to lose interest in the early 00's, when the singer fired the rest of the band and made the last two records pretty much on his own.

Yeah I'm glad someone else picked up on that. Seven and the Ragged Tiger was not regarded as some big departure or notable drop in quality by a lot of people. TravisBicklesMohawk's opinion seems unusual, but I don't visit Duran Duran boards so I don't know for certain.

Iron Maiden - First time: No Adrian. The Prancer. Bruce sucked. "No Prayer" (lp and tour) sucked. Second time: Bruce and Adrian are back. Realized I wish they had stayed in Bruce's solo band.

Judas Priest - First time: "Ram It Down" sucked. Second time: "Nostradamus". Final: No KK.

Goo Goo Dolls - Strike one: "Let Love In" sucked. Strike two: "Something For The Rest Of Us" sucked. Done.

Boston - Didn't like "Third Stage". Stopped following them.

Black Sabbath - After DIo was out (all times), I had no interest.

DIO - Don't like Goldy. Didn't like "Dream Evil". Done.

Ozzy - Don't like Wylde. Didn't like "No Rest For The Wicked". Done.

Styx - No Dennis, no Styx.

Journey - When Schon fired Augeri, I was done.

Ace Frehley - "Trouble Walkin'" was the last lp I purchased. Hated that he was back in KISS. Had no interest in him after he left KISS again.

Elton John - When he fired Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson. "Blue Moves" is terrible. I liked "Rock Of The Westies" when it was released, but not anymore (with the exceptions of "Island Girl" and "Grow Some Funk Of Your Own"). I do like a dozen or so songs after "Blue Moves", but I only have "Too Low For Zero" and "Reg Strikes Back".

Van Halen - Done when "1984" was released.

Bruce Dickinson - "Tyranny Of Souls" wasn't good, plus no Adrian. Lost interest.

Mr. Big - No Paul Gilbert, no interest. Didn't purchase the last cd "Ten", because Eric's voice is done and the first few songs released were terrible.

Queensryche - "Hear In The Now Frontier" sucked. Didn't like "Promised Land" either. Done until Todd was hired.

KISS - "Psycho Circus" era. Passed on the cd and tour. Wasn't happy circa 1996 to 2003.

The Cure - Didn't like "Wild Mood Swings" (except for "Mint Car"). Didn't like "Bloodflowers" at all. That was the last cd I purchased.

Motley Crue-I should’ve cut them out thirty years ago but hung on through Saints. One of the worst bands of the genre

Warrant-Not because of Jani’s canning. That was long overdue. I always thought this place was stupid for the amount of people who
compared him to John Lennon

Aerosmith-I was a huge fan from 1988-2001. I had all the cds and box set. Now I just don’t care. I still like Joe and Brad but could give a fuck about the band, Steven, Tom or Joey.
