Shit. I thought Randy was amazing while he was still alive.

He and EVH were the absolute pinnacle of hard rock guitar gods when I was in school.

Maybe more people noticed Randy since his death, but that is just a mathematical function of time. Ozzy was just starting his career and was sort of an underground hit when Randy died.

All of us teenagers knew who he was, but he hadn't crossed over into the pop culture to where adults were conscious of him and was still growing in visibility. His bat-biting antics and stuff were beginning to get traction, but his music was still just known by young metal fans.

PROBABLY why there is no pre-shot Randy stuff...I meannnnn...the one thing we have is from a fucking public access cable show lol.

I was like 14 when he died. I wasn’t yet playing “seriously”. I don’t even graduate until ‘86. All the other guitarists I knew were huge fans of RR and EVH. He was considered a guitar god from the first Ozzy album

Of course I am talking about guitar players. I doubt my wife knew who Randy was before or after his death.

Randy did get better after he died in a way - because he passed away in his prime.

We never got to hear him get old and boring or release a shitty grunge album. We never heard him do a nu-metal album with George Lynch.

It's like if Zakk had died after No More Tears. People would unquestionably rate him higher than they do today.

EVH certainly stopped innovating and started repeating himself in schlockier and schlockier ways in his last 30 years. His songwriting chops also went to shit, and the internet making his not-great personality visible did him no favors.

Had EVH gone down in a plane in '84, it would just be all legend for him. As it is now, his legacy is conflicted and clouded by a bunch of bullshit.

EVH didn't write songs, he wrote riffs. Without actual songwriters in the band- Roth and Hagar - all we would get from him would be a bunch of VH3 type albums.

True, but his soloing was already recycling bits of his seventies licks by the Hagar era.

...and it was a little disheartening that his writing style never really progressed. He was cutting edge in the seventies, putting down riffs that were ahead of their time...then in the eighties, they were OF their time, and in the nineties they were old fashioned...by A Different Kind of Truth it was positively retro, even relying on seventies demos for the material.

I mean, FFS, the guy was SO creative when he was young, but got in a rut and never came out. Still writing eighties music in 2012.

Exactly. "Lemmy is God" was around for many years, partly as a joke at his apparent indestructibility re his drug and alcohol intake, but partly because his image came to be shorthand for the embodiment of 'metal'.

Yep. Prime example is Hendrix.

If we had got a bunch of synth-heavy adult contemporary albums from Hendrix in the 80's, like we did from Santana and Miles Davis, his legend wouldn't be half of what it is.

I think he also kind of ran away from his legacy. The recent stories about how he was scared of Yngwie bear that out. He became Mr. Keyboards because he knew that he couldn't keep up with the new kids anymore. And the creative rut was real - even "Right Now" was recycled from The Wild Life, and Top of the World was warmed-over Jump. Like Rick Nielsen, once he ran thru the 100s of songs/ideas he wrote before he got signed, he didn't know what to do with himself.

There's no way of knowing, but I sometimes wonder what great things guitarists like Jimi Hendrix and Randy Rhoads would have done had they lived longer. Would it have been more mind blowing, innovative, and amazing stuff, or would it have been a decline into mediocrity or even obscurity? Like with most songwriters or athletes, have most musicians given us their best by their 20s or 30s?

Jimi with a Floyd Rose and more modern technology would have been interesting to a certain degree, but I don't think his technique or dexterity would have improved that much. And some of his lyrics aren't anything special.

Who is "nobody"? Ozzy had released two very successful albums with him by then. The 2nd one was released half a year before he died. If you weren't into metal or hard rock maybe you didn't know, but definitely everyone who had a guitar and/or listened to Sabbath or Ozzy type music did. Those same types of people are the only ones now who really give a shit. It's not like he has mainstream recognition like Hendrix or Clapton or something. The basic point of Lemmy's statement is bullshit. Randy's death really had nothing to do with his popularity and/or respect which admittedly is rare. His legend and notoriety grew, for sure, but he didn't get "better" because he died. Everyone knew he was an extremely rare talent from the very first song on the first Ozzy album. His playing easily holds up today.

If a 7th grader wrote a paper about him today, the same number of kids wouldn't know who the fuck they were talking about.

I first heard Diary of a Madman when I was about nine. It blew my mind. The title track mesmerized me. I love Van Halen but that original Blizzard of Ozz band was something else. The only lineup of Ozzy’s that gave his old band a run for it.
