Howard Stern Show 'to be canceled' after nearly 20 years on SiriusXM

Post by Nate S Axel »

Is Howard Stern funny anymore?

Do you listen to him?

Do you think SiriusXM will lowball him in negotiations? What will he do next?

Is it Trump's fault?

Who should replace him?

It was that embarrassing Kamala Harris interview he did, people never went back after that.

He’ll retire and never be seen again.

Good riddance.

I was a Stern fan for a long time but gave up on him after Artie left because the show became watered down, unfunny, and Stern was starting to phone it in with his 3 day a week schedule...that was 2010. Dude has been coasting for over a decade on doing nothing. I think Robin has been remote since the pandemic as well as the rest of the staff. They are all so fucking lazy.

I listen to Stern regularly. I still like the show but he's been cutting his work in increments that this feels like the natural next step. He went from 5 to 4 to 3 days a week. Then he added countless week long breaks throughout the year. Then he started taking the entire summer off in addition to that. Then after Covid ended he stopped coming back to the studio. He only came in maybe 4 or 5 times for uber A list guests. I kinda found it insulting to guests when he would do the interviews from his basement but they had to come to NYC and sit in the studio. Plus Sirius paid a fortune to build him an entire compound and he can't bother to come in. I'm a fan but I'm ok if this is the end. Some of his staff are fucked. There's a few people who are barely employable.

Not "canceled" but rather, they are not renewing his contract is what I read.

He's got tons of money, and likely has limited if any interest at all to renew, or continue on with any type of long term contract.

My work commute is only 15 minutes so this won't have a huge impact on me but it's hard to imagine radio w/out him. Like tv w/o Letterman. It creates a vacuume but you just move on. No one under 40 knows who Howard is.

Yeah, I just copied the headline.

It sounds like if there was interest in renewal/being extended, it would be for a lot less than his current contract, but like you said, at almost $100M per year for the last 20 years or so, he doesn't need the money.

Speaking of Stern...

Did Jackie 'The Joke Man' Martling make the biggest (dumbest) mistake ever in Radio when he turned down $650,000.00 a year in 2001?

I just went down the Stern rabbit hole... which says Stern is worth $500M give or take, and Robin is worth $75M.

Jackie's departure was a bit of a big deal at the time, and it wasn't long after, that everyone realized how big of a fumble he just made!

While I don't follow Stern nearly as much as I used to or listen like I did in the 90's and early 2000's, but it was clear that Jackie faded quickly.

WTF do you care about him interviewing KH? BFD, she lost, she's faded away. Oh, I forgot, she's black, as well as another good-looking woman who'll never talk to you, much less fuck you.

I was a huge Stern fan, especially those first satellite years. In the last decade or so, I've listened off and on in the 6 month Sirius-XM trial subs I'd get after buying a car. And I would turn it off, I was so bored. I thought I was just getting older and maybe stopped thinking he was funny.

I'm half a communist myself so I don't care about "woke" shit but man, it sure seemed like the Wack Pack were just weird fans after a certain point. Excruciatingly boring people.

He started branding himself as an ace interviewer, and I don't disagree, but the interviews were interesting because the people were interesting. Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston... he was going to ask them one or two moderately risque questions for the clickbait, everything else a total PR snoozefest.

That whole Artie era though, I'll probably talk about some of those people for the rest of my life. I'll never stop talking about Elegant Elliot Offen. I'd never seen a more bizarre man in my life. A truly disturbed human being, RIGHT!!! ARTHRITIC, SYPHILITIC, PARALYTIC...RIGHT!! THAT'S GANGSTER TALK!!! I was heartbroken when he was banned. I think he punched a wall or assaulted Fa Fa or something.

Sirius is gonna get David Lee Roth to replace since it worked so well last time.

The article says they're going to make him an offer they just don't think he's gonna accept it. So it's not being canceled at all. It also could be a negotiating tactic. The only place reporting this is The Sun and they're not exactly The Wall Street Journal.

The show was already having issues when Robin stopped coming in and was broadcasting from home. And once Covid happened and he stopped coming into the studio for shows, that was the beginning of the end. The entire vibe of the show changed when he was just doing shows from his basement. It basically became a podcast at that point. I don't mind that he evolved at all, I actually think it was good, but he just didn't have the passion anymore.

Whatever happens, he had a legendary run that will never be matched.

No. Stern 100% was a total game changer and had a HUGE impact on those earlier years. If you don’t know the Channel 9 shows and the pre satellite years you will never understand his career.

Unfortunately when he got divorced and started banging women WAY too attractive for him and started taking himself seriously the appeal really dropped. Then wifey #2, then his “furtography”, then AGT, etc, etc, etc. once he was woke, he was a total joke. No wack pack, nothing. Also, a BIG part of his appeal was him pushing the envelope as far as what was allowed on the air. Once he was on satellite and he could pretty much say or do anything that was gone as well.

As for Jackie, there is a pretty good documentary about him from a few years ago that is worth watching.

Anybody else here that used to read or post on the dawgshed or whatever it was called. Basically Sludge or KISSasylum for ex-Stern fans to bust his balls. It was mostly people who were kicked off his official board when he became a huge pussy. There was hilarious shit on there way better than his show at that point. Good times.

Trump and Kamala had nothing to do with his departure or otherwise.

His contract is up. They probably won't pay him what he wants. 100 million dollars a year is entirely too much money, especially when he's not exactly setting the world on fire anymore.

Also, I'm sure he will make a deal for his archived shows and that will make him even richer.

They guy's not losing out on anything. Nothing, umkay.

That’s a good idea.

He did that with Springsteen. That was on HBO, I think.

He’s the most famous radio host of our time. He could easily reinvent himself and be like Barbara Walters and just do a few serious interviews for HBO a few times a year.
