So I finally watched The Decline of Western Civilisation Part II

My random thoughts:

Nearly all the younger ones were completely idiots, no wonder most of them never made it.
The veterans seemed to handle the interviews much better (Ozzy, G&P, Lemmy, Steven&Joe...)
Even the drunk Holmes of W.A.S.P. seemed sympathetic compared to the giggling bimbos (both girls and boys).

Poison guys were ultra annoying, almost as bad as Odin and London morons.
I missed who were the 2 fat chicks? Did they seriously think to make it big? (career, not the bodies)

Really they couldn't bring more people to the "live" shows? Not the production team neither the band telling their friends "Please come everybody, we're gonna be in the movie..."? The live shows seemed bogus and staged and there were only like 50 people there. Megadeth performing and having a line of stagedivers.. jumping on the empty spaces of the audience

I no more wonder why Lizzy Borden never made it bigger
Odin thought he's gonna be "bigger than DLR"... maybe he should have taken some singing lessons! Is he still alive? He promised to kill himself if he wouldn't be a big star.

What a punch of dorks.

Made me wonder. Maybe it was not a grunge that killed hair metal. Maybe it was this movie.

The Ozzy orange juice thing was also totally staged. If you compare this to part 1, it's very suspicious. Did the director like Punk better than Hard Rock?

That was I thinking also. Aside from that juice thing Ozzy seemed to be sober making some breakfast, then we see just a hand and the "juice thing"

It's a performative, fictionalized, exaggerated version of real life - aka "reality TV".

A real documentary would have been driving around filming from Tuff's Uhaul bunk beds, filming Sleek wiping down the stage, etc.

In defense of select individuals behavior and how they carried themselves in The Metal Years...

You do realize that 75% of those interviewed were basically teenagers, to early/mid 20-somethings... right?

The old men in this thing were Alice, Ozzy, Tyler, Simmons and Stanley.

Alice Cooper turned 40 in Feb. 1988, Ozzy was likely 38 or 39 here, as he turned 40 in Dec. 1988.

Simmons was born in August 1949, which means he was likely 38 or 39 as well, while Paul was 35 or 36! It's pretty nuts to think about how young they all were.

Lemmy was born in Dec. 1945, which if my math is correct, he was the OLDEST guy in this, and he was 41 or 42 when he shot his parts.

Even Dave Mustaine and Chris Holmes were not even 30 yet, clocking in at 26 & 29 respectively.

This was filmed from 1987 into very early 1988... with that... even the old guys in this Doc were between late 30's and very early 40's. Which compared to 75% of this board... we're ALL a decade, or two older than they were here.

So of course a lot of what some of these people said, comes off as immature, silly and at times, down right stupid. Easy to do, when they're all young and clueless in life.

Another thing... not everyone interviewed was in a band... some of those people were basically fans, scene'sters, or dare I call them, wannabe musicians who were on the scene, but never really got off the ground. If there were 40 people interviewed, I would guess I personally knew or met, 30+ and had crossed paths with 8 of the other 10.

Not that anyone asked, but I was 21 in this, and Michael was 19... crazy times for sure, and I have no problem saying, these were some of the best days of my life.

As some know, the Ozzy pouring OJ on the table was staged, as we learned later... and who knows what else was staged, or edited to make someone look like an idiot.

A good example... when I was interviewed for the "Nothin' But A Good Time, The History of Hair Metal" back about 4-5 years ago, the Producers of the segment would ask questions, and they even brought up "Decline of Western Civilization - Part 2 The Metal Years" multiple times.

I recall them asking me about Randy "O", and Odin sitting in the hot tub, and what he said about planning to kill himself if he didn't get as big as Robert Plant.

They asked, and I answered, and said what many others have over the last 35+ years, "Well, is he still alive? Because he didn't get as big as Robert Plant did..." and that made the final cut in the NBAGT series.

Fast forward a few months, and a YT channel interviews Randy "O", and they essentially throw me under the bus, that I was talking sh!t about the guy.

Not true at all... I was merely answering their question... and when they asked it, I had to chuckle a bit as I recalled that scene. Anyone and everyone at some point would have thought, or said something similar, as I did... and ironically, I had just talked to Randy on the phone a few weeks/months before that interview.

Then this Bad Brad (who played guitar in a Sunset Strip band named Shock) made sure to make me look like the jerk to Randy... who seemed miffed at what Brad was saying.

Check the 43 minute mark here > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XF6TlCI8go I wasn't taking any pot-shots at Randy... I was answering their question.

My point of all this is... to the person who just watched it and felt everyone looked or sounded stupid... well... consider the times, consider their age, and in the end, we're not trying to save to world here, these people were doing exactly what that more recent documentary described in its title... we were all having Nothin' But a Good Time.

That theory has been proposed many, many times on music boards, including The Velvet Rope, which was full of industry people.

The movie didn't "kill" hair metal, it was just a window into how big a fad it had become. The glut of C and D bands that got signed in 89-90 killed it. It ran its course before middle America even knew who blowbrains was.

I seriously doubt many people actually saw the movie. Not enough to explain the millions who stopped buying the albums, anyway.

Per Wiki, the Budget was $500,000 & it brought in $373,743 at the Box office. Did anyone here see it in a theatre when it originally came out? I had a dubbed VHS copy. Although, I would see it from time to time at the small art theatres.

My Hollywood life came true- I made it
I saw this strange name of VHS in Tower -so I bought it
Turns out I got the Odin life-awesome

The era was so big every town felt like Hollywood/Sunset Blvd..even small towns like Fresno was awesome

The jealousy and envy of this era is the best..you truly missed out. ..the fun and peak was 1990-1992…hit that perfectly.
Best is everyday feels like it is summer 1991. The feeling every single second truly is unbelievable and fun

Feels good to win in life..Decline II just another part of greatest time in Earth history

Yes, I did see it in the theatre, Blue Ridge Cinema - Gainesville, GA. There were only a few people in the theatre, and if I remember, it only ran for a week, maybe two weeks tops.

All in all, it was a great watch and take nothing serious from the movie. It was just a good time, in a great period!

I saw it in the theater on opening day. Me & my buddy were too young, so my older bro bought the tickets for us. He didn't even bother to go inside & watch the movie with us. My & my buddy were the ONLY two people in the theater. We were both 14 years old.

Good point. Not in the theaters, anyway. By the time it hit video and MTV the scene was already leaking oil.

When I first saw it, I thought the old guys came across as statesmen and the young guys came across as morons.

Many years later, I thought the young guys still came across as morons, but so did most of the old guys. (Particularly Paul and Gene, but now I realize that's their thing.)

I was about the same age as most of the musicians in this film and I knew at the time that most of them seemed functionally retarded. I ain't buying the "age" excuse.

We were all morons at some point. And very few people make it in the entertainment biz.

But there's value in giving it a shot and believing in yourself. If you never got together with a group of friends or like-minded people and tried to conquer the world, you're missing out on one of the true life-defining experiences.

I'll never get bored of this movie and am super grateful that it ever got made. It's an amazing snapshot of the era, not meant to be taken too seriously.

You have to remember that rock music was still relatively young, the scene was full of youthful wonder and excitement and opportunities, people were in general more positive and optimistic. They truly were better times. I lived the scene though a UK lens but it was much the same here - everyone was in a band, your friends would get signed and release an EP and headline the Marquee just because they were wearing cowboy boots, no one overthought anything and everyone was having loads of sex.
