I’m largely indifferent about Eddie Trunk and his daily name dropping tour, however, he has given a platform to a bunch of music artists that may or may not deserve the platform. Would John 5 or Mike Portnoy be known to the general public in 2025 without Eddie Trunk? Would Glen Hughes or any leftover from UFO have a platform?

What are your thoughts on this? Certainly there are younger people that could be promoted way more than aged out artists , but that’s just me.

Portnoy is the drummer for Dream Theater. He doesn't need Eddie Trunk.

I would say UFO. Even with all his pimping, they still suck.

Frank is an AMAZING singer who still has 100% of his voice in 2025. They were a fucking great band with amazing songs. I’ve loved them since the ‘70s and so have plenty of other people I know of. If you never heard them you are either 15 or have been in a coma for several decades. If you think they have a bad singer and terrible sound writing I cannot even imagine how bad your musical taste must be.

John Sykes.

Nuno, Portnoy, Winery Dogs, Mike Tramp, the Trixter guys, Taime, Squire, all kinds of guys get attention from his show that they'd get nowhere else in the US.

He truly does keep rock alive on SiriusXM. Think of all the failed shows before him. But his still plays on. You may not like him, but he's good for the genre.

I think Eddie Trunk would be forgotten if not for Eddie Trunk.

Eddie does a lot for the rock and metal genre

He is extremely well respected by prominent artists

And he is a HUGE name . Can’t think of any other radio host in music that is as big as him

I think you are greatly overestimating Trunk's pull in the rock world. You also may need to look up the definition of "general public". Not a single example you give is anybody that's known to the general public.

in 20 years Eddie Trunk will be remembered as much as Lonn Friend is remembered today.

Shit, I'm 57 and I heard "of" them, but never heard them. They were a C band even in their "heyday". No radio play.
Low/no chart action. Some 70s bands got to hang around for 4-5 albums without really selling anything. They were one of them. If Zappa didn't make fun of them they'd be even less (un)known than they are(n't).

They were played a LOT on KSHE which is the longest-running station in the World. They even played a Super Jam here in St. Louis one summer. "Tower" was a radio staple going all the way band to the '70s. They also appeared in the movie FOXES.

They never broke big, but they definitely should have. They were about 10 years ahead of the "hair metal" movement and as good as any band. Great musicians, great image, great vocals and great songs. They have a strong cult following and have toured with different lineups over the years and I was lucky enough to see them recently with 3/5 of the 2nd original lineup.

They are great even if they were never HUGE. WAY better than the generic bands of the era like Starz.

They also had the greatest logo of all time.

UFO were huge in the 70's. For all his issues, Michael Schenker was a guitar God. He's so good.
He was just 18 years old when he joined UFO in1974.
I would guess, most of us know and like many UFO songs, and just don't know who it is.
I'm this way with The Foo Fighters. I know they have mega fans, but I'm not one. But I hear their songs, and someone announces, it's The Foo Fighters, and I like the song, but I never would have known who it was.

I'm from Philly, so the Midwest B/C markets are a foreign land to me, but you were what kept bands like Angel alive. Case in point - you kept Sammy Hagar around long enough to finally get a call from Eddie Van Halen.

That's not how I remember it as a tween/teen in the 70's. UFO had many hits before Lights Out.
But you're right about Angel. I never heard of them until I was a freshman in high school, and even then, I only saw the upside down/right side up logo, which as a 14 year old, I thought was very cool.
But I had an older cousin that had many albums that I never heard of, and he had Angel albums. I listened to them a lot when I was visiting. They did a great cover of Mott the Hoople's All The Young Dudes.

That's true. St. Louis was also a hot spot for RUSH early on, which I never realized until much later on. I drove a delivery route back in the '90s that took me into central Illinois. One day 2 DJs were arguing about whether Sammy was known by ANYONE aside from Montrose before he joined VH. it was funny. In St. Louis he was always a big "star" with tons of airplay all throughout the '80s. And of course, his MTV concert was taped here at the Checkerdome (R.I.P.) back in '83.

Even without Trunk, UFO would still be remembered in the US. They have a pretty strong following here in the Chicago area at least. 900-1500 capacity venues for the last 25 years or so. Slightly larger venues in the 2nd half of the 1990s.

Throw in guys like Steve Harris, Kirk Hammett, Slash, and Tom Morello talking about how influential they are, they would definitely be remembered.
