Are you still listening to new stuff?

Post by SchenkerFan »

Some of these sludge bands were still releasing good music in the 00s... but more often than not it was mediocre at best. Frontiers didn't help, at first their project albums seemed interesting but it all started sounding the same after a while.

I must have stopped buying new records somewhere around 2010. I've heard maybe five in their entirety since. A Different Kind of Truth was good (but mostly old songs anyway). Ozzy's Patient Number 9 was a pleasant surprise. I pretty much lost interest in what these bands are putting out a long time ago. I'm happy spinning the classic albums once in a while, other than that I'm trying to explore other genres.

Last thing I actually bought since streaming was Angel of Retribution. Otherwise I just use Spotify.

In the last 5 years just Dua Lipa and Ghost when it comes to physical releases.

On my youtube and Spotify there will be a sprinkling of new stuff that I listen to.

My gym playlist has modern pop on it (Sabrina Carpenter, Dua Lipa, a few others).

More or less, yeah. Depends on who is playing on what.

Frontiers is a good example. Agreed that a lot of their project records sound the same but some are really good with the right veteran guys like the two recent Black Swan albums.

Sometimes I turn on the New Rock playlist on Spotify. Most of the stuff I don't like. I still try to find something new.

New stuff from 80’s bands? No.

But thanks to Spotify, there’s an endless well of new-to-me stuff to listen to from newer metal bands, say dating back 15 or 20 years to current.

Me either. Winery Dogs last new album i got into.

Streaming has opened up so much old stuff I never got exposed to.

Tons. In the past year or so I’ve done the Spotify Top 5 for probably 100 artists that I’d never heard before and I’ve listened to probably 50-100 classic albums for the first time also. Everything from CSNY to Doja Cat.

A year or so ago I got introduced to Royal Blood. It was the first time in probably 15 years that new music affected me the way it does when you’re a kid where it grabs you and you get obsessive with it. I’ve been back into listening to new/undiscovered music pretty much ever since.

Sure...I just ordered the second to last Carcass album (semi-new one from an OLD band) and the second to last album from VR Sex (a "NEW" band). I also have both of their latest albums but somehow missed those earlier releases...

Constantly. New bands, new-to-me old bands, new releases by bands I already like, old releases I previously missed by bands I already like. Life's too short to play the same old, same old. Though they also get a spin once in a while.

Albums from Sludge acts that have come out the past 10 years that I liked and have done more than just listen to once and then forget:

Lynch Mob - Babylon (2023) - Would have been way better with Oni, but still decent
Richie Kotzen - 50 for 50 (2020) - Lots of good stuff
Stephen Pearcy - View to Thrill (2018) - Nearly Ratt
Terry Ilous - Gypsy Dreams (2017) - Guy from XYZ/Great White doing flamenco arrangements of 80s rock hits. Kicks ass
Great White - Full Circle (2017) - Killer album with the guy mentioned above singing.
Lynch Mob - Brotherhood (2017) - Ten fuckin' stars. This is rock and roll to me
Stephen Pearcy - Smash (2017)

I can't think of a single other release, and most of those are from eight years ago already. It's pretty much over.

Maybe some of Testament and Overkill whenever they come out with a new album, plus the occasional Frontiers melodic hard rock stuff.

I just discovered The Warning a few weeks ago. It has probably been over 20 years since I've actually had any interest in a new band to this degree. Maybe even longer, to be honest.

Tremendous songs and performers in this group. Great back story. Lovely to look at. I can't say enough about these girls. Listen to their albums, watch their videos, watch their concerts on YouTube...

I gather they write their own songs, with a few outside writers. I wonder how much of this they actually do themselves. Anyway, their songs are so great to me that I wonder if the Poison and Motley Crue song doctors have come out of retirement...lol

Thanks for that one. I like the first two XYZ albums but had no idea he had a solo career, let alone something like this. (I never listened to / followed GW except reading all the drama posts on here). It was a bit hit and miss vocally but the guitars were excellent throughout.

This describes me as well. I’d love to find “new” acts that I enjoy, but it’s rare when it happens.

That said, there are lots of great bands out there who are actively releasing new music. It just takes more effort nowadays to find them.

That was the last CD I bought in a store too! 2 fucking decades ago, amazing.

I think I bought a few digipacks since then, as merch, Monster Magnet, and DAD. But even those were over 10 years ago.

Hadn't listened to anything new in forever. but recently have gotten into Sakis Tolis, Behemoth and Orbit Culture.

Not very much ‘new’ stuff it’s mostly just regurgitated or bad photo copies of what I like

But I sometimes discover good stuff from 90s or earlier.

Just don’t get excited by it like I used to in my 20s I don’t relate to younger people 🤣
