I appreciate the Mia Zapata nod, but that band was never gonna be huge. But they were good, I still listen to them.

When I think of musicians who died young, the ones that come to mind were already famous/successful when they checked out. Solo artists were obviously finished, but some of the bands with dead members replaced lost members and remained huge, or turned into something different like Pearl Jam or New Order.
The one I think about sometimes is Sublime. It is impossible to know what would have happened if Bradley Nowell hadn't overdosed, but could Sublime have put out another couple of great albums with catchy singles that could have propelled them into the upper tier of rock bands? Or, did they just happen to put out one "right place, right time" album that would never be followed up? Impossible to know.

Cliff Burton alive would have made Metallica not laughing stock of heavy metal world…Black cd and everything lame after wouldn’t have existed..I like to think

Eddie & the Cruisers. Well, he didn't technically die. Eddie faked his death and became a construction worker in Canada under a new name. But had they kept recording.....

So why didn't they do anything before Razzle died? Two Steps From The Move didn't do jack before or after Razzle, and that was their fifth album.
I like them just fine, but Hanoi is the most overrated band ever.

I really think that James was more on the bandwagon of thrash when Metallica formed and he was along for the ride...
After the influence of Mustaine (along with his riffs they wrote together) and Cliff faded away, the songwriting drifted to more of an organic place for James...more heavy metal/hard rock...

I actually think Cliff would have embraced a direction change. He's frozen in time so we'll never know...but he's the one who had the band listening to Skynyrd, Thin Lizzy, etc....which is the influences that came into place during the Load era. People gave Hetfield shit for wearing a cowboy hat during that era too, meanwhile, Cliff wore a cowboy hat during the MOP era sometimes.
