very interesting. its part of the game.
my ? is, did verlander "plunk" mauer or some other twin during
this game for stealing signs?

fair is far
if a player on 2nd is stealing signs, the pitcher does have a legit excuse to "plunk" him or any other player during the same game.

The pitcher also has a legitimate excuse to plunk a batter if they do the Manny-stare, after hitting a HR off him. That of course is left up to the ump, and potential suspension, etc.

If pitcher's don't want players on second stealing signs, change your signals every pitch. It's been happening throughout baseball history. Mauer didn't invent this.

It was pretty fucking cool to see though. And whoever made that video is awesome at noticing that.

Kill-

verlander can top 99+ with his fastball.
takes a lot of balls to steal his signs, knowing
how hard he can throw.

of course mauer did not invent this.
but can he be more obvious?

never does a player need to adjust his helmet while taking
a lead off 2nd base

I'm still under the impression that Detroit shoulda hid it better. If you have a guy on second, you have to change your signs every pitch. Especially if you're calling off-speed/breaking pitches, not to mention that the guy on second is a catcher.

Now the pitcher can retaliate I guess, but really there's no one to blame but himself. Plus Verlander doesn't really have a reputation as a head-hunter.

I also found this in response to it:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4522901

The video circulated through the Minnesota clubhouse before Thursday afternoon's game at Comerica Park. Although Kubel characterized the video as "funny," Morneau took offense at the notion that Mauer was stealing signs. The Twins say that Mauer habitually fiddles with his helmet regardless of whether he's standing on first, second or third base.

Although it's common practice for baserunners to try to steal signs from second base to help a hitter be aware of the type of ensuing pitch or location, it's generally done subtly for fear of retribution. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Mauer's helmet-touching display was so obvious that it would have ensured one of his teammates being drilled by a fastball in response.

"If you're stealing signs and you're using your hands on your helmet, I guarantee you, somebody would get killed," Gardenhire said. "That's not the way you steal signs."

Take that how you will.

Interesting.

The Mariners are adopting a new workout plan, mandatory for minor leaguers, optional for ML players. Griffey, for one, is opting out. They removed almost all weights and machines, just have a bunch of compressed-air resistance systems built into the wall. The new plan is supposed to focus on explosiveness and baseball activities.

The team now has players doing specific workouts designed to increase lower body strength and make that translate into an ability to hit a baseball and react more explosively to balls hit in their direction. This is pretty radical stuff the Mariners are trying. No other team in baseball is doing this. The Mariners have exclusivity to Elliot's training regimen for the next three years.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/m ... aulin.html

Well, what can be said about that? If you think about it, it makes sense I suppose. You could also see why older HOF players wouldn't want to change their life-long routine.

I'm curious what kind of impact this could have on the prospects in their farm, when they implement it throughout the organization. Tacoma ( Seattle's AAA ) is pretty tough. They won the Division and they went to the PCL Championship, and lost to Sacramento ( Oakland's AAA ) in the first series. Maybe he's on to something with training and conditioning. It just seems like "this can't be the first anyone has thought of this" to me.

What a hell of a job Jack Z. is doing. If a healthy Seattle makes the Playoffs a 1-3 of King Felix, Lee and Bedard is fucking frightening. With Texas continuing to improve and the Angels, supposably taking a step back. The West could be more interesting than the East and Central this year.

And if they can figure out a way to schedule 18 games each vs Northeastern and BC once the season starts then they might actually score some runs.

Joe Nathan has a tore UCL.

Just got out of the Twins clubhouse, where Joe Nathan, Ron Gardenhire and team trainers revealed that Nathan has a torn UCL. They're not certain if it's a full tear or a partial tear -- Gardenhire called it "significant" -- and Gardenhire says it's the sort of thing you can't tell until you get in and do surgery.

Will they do surgery? Right now, they're taking a wait and see approach. The plan is to give Nathan's arm 2-3 weeks to see if the pain dies down. If so, and if he can pitch with it, he'll do what he can to avoid surgery and try to pitch through the pain. Gardenhire says it's totally Nathan's decision.

Wow that sucks for them. Who's gonna close now? Rauch ( who rotoworld is speculating, because he's pitched the 9th )? Neshek ( is he healthy )? Guerrier?

You know, I really questioned the fact that they were willing to extend Nathan but not Torii Hunter a few years ago, since it really had to be one or the other.

Me too. The problem is though, Carl Pohad was the richest man in Minnesota. He could've kept all of them.

Long term contracts for pitchers is usually a bad idea. Schilling while he spoke highly of John Lackey, was really questioning giving him a five year deal. OTOH he's pretty vocal about why you re-sign Beckett now. So take that what it's worth......aside from the whole "he's a moron" thing.

Me personally I woulda signed Nathan over Hunter too. Finding a dominant closer is tougher than a dominant OF. I haven't even won a Fantasy league yet, so what the fuck do I know?

Yeah, I just read that. It's a nice thing to do for the player. Lots of teams have done it. He's going to be a commentator on ESPN now.

At least the bitterness between the two can subside. His standing O in Fenway was one of my favorite memories of '09. It was nice. I also remember when he stayed on the bench pouting and Jeter dove into the stands.....that was nice too.

I remember when he was the link. Williams, Yaz........Nomah. And I thought for sure we'd see "5" on the wall someday. Considering they gave his number to Baldelli last season, something they haven't done for Pedro I might add. We don't have to worry about that happening.
