Re: The official NHL thread
Good times. The season has come down to whether or not we can get a headshot check on Crosby next Thursday. NESN playcaller Jack Edwards said Crosby's teeth should be on the ice. Chiarelli came out after Campbell's ruling and said head shots are legal and he hopes the team responds for the next Pitts. game. Meanwhile, Savard is bedridden. Bring on the draft. Nightmare season.

I can't believe nobody retaliated after Savard got hit. Ryder just stood there.chungasrevenge wrote:Good times. If that had happened back while guys while O'Reilly, Milbury or Jonathan were on the ice there would have been a bloodbath.
This team is lifeless and takes the ice with no fire in them most nights. Sure they need to show restraint over the little things but when your top goal scorer is laying on the ice there are things more important that a couple of points.

They would have been pounded into the ice. Who cares about the 2 points? It looked like the Bruins didn't know how to react. Even Lucic was dumbfounded. The whole team is being called out by the city and all media members. I thought Milbury's head was going to explode during the pre-game the other night. The only way they can salvage any goodwill with the fanbase this season is by turning the next Pens game into a bloodbath. Forget about the playoffs.

Even Guerin thinks that Cooke should have gotten suspended for the hit.

As a veteran Habs fan who's been watching the Bruins and Habs go at it since the late 70's, I was shocked the hit didn't result in a bigger reaction from the Bruins. At the time, later in the game, whenever... honestly, I was dumbfounded. Even more maddening is the league's decision to not suspend Cooke. At very least you can call it intent to injure and suspend him for taking out one of the better players in the game.
The OHL has taken the proper route. Any hit to the head is illegal - period. Guys are bigger, faster, stronger than ever before - and the equipment has changed a great deal too. One day someone's going to get hit, fall unconscious in mid-air, land the wrong way, and die. Then where does the game go? Years ago it was ruled players had to be responsible for their sticks and any high stick, accidental or not, resulted in a penalty be it a minor, double-minor, or major. The league needs to go the same route with head shots.
March 18 should be interesting - for all the wrong reasons.
Back to the playoff race, the Habs are looking better as they get healthier and Halak is going to make things real difficult for Habs management. Halak or Price will go in the offseason - probably at the draft. I still think it will be Halak, but I'm not so sure it should be. The B's, you would have to think, are in trouble. Maybe they can pull it together and make the playoffs for Savvy, but I gotta say that Julien is a guy who has the reputation of having a certain shelf life and the team might be starting to tune him out.

Price has to be gone. I think Halak is the future. Regardless, it won't matter on Saturday. Patrice's pals are in town and on fire! Beware the bear or something like thatWOLF wrote:

Habs have looked good against the B's this year. 4-1, though a couple were in OT/SO I think. It is a pretty big game on Saturday. The Habs can really get a fix on a playoff spot with a win, and do damage to the B's chances - and vise versa.chungasrevenge wrote:Price has to be gone. I think Halak is the future. Yeah, the Habs have owned them this season. I'll be curious to see if the B's can carry over any momentum from the Philly game. I thought I was watching the wrong game. I haven't seen that team in a year.WOLF wrote:Habs have looked good against the B's this year. 4-1, though a couple were in OT/SO I think. It is a pretty big game on Saturday. Bruins were lacksidasical most of the night. They only woke up now and then after the Kostitsyn hit on Lucic and a couple of other times. I think the Habs may have punched their ticket now. I think the B's will make it, but just. At least we should see some different 1st round matchups this year.

As a Flyer fan (living in Edmonton--"Oil Country"), I'm thrilled that Leighton is working out so well. There's so much talent on that team right now. Hopefully the win against Chicago yesterday is a good omen.

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the comeback against Chicago. The Hawks gacked away a 3-goal third period lead today. They're having some serious defensive problems late in games lately.Scatman wrote:As a Flyer fan (living in Edmonton--"Oil Country"), I'm thrilled that Leighton is working out so well. Yeah, they can't bring a consistent effort. Talent aside, at least play with some urgency. It's a seeding game against their arch rival and they're half asleep. Ah well. Habs are getting hot at the right time. The 6th seed is huge.WOLF wrote:/\

Reading between the lines from all the interviews I think two things are going to happen tonight:
1. Crosby is going to be harassed and roughed up(cleanly) all night.
2. Thornton is going to pound Cooke into the ice.

I think you're right. The game isn't gong to live up to the hype. It's dominating all the sports talk in the city. I guess Colin Campbell will address both teams before the game and the Garden has brought in extra security. On top of everything else, Bobby Orr and the 1970 cup team will be celebrated as well. Should be fun. The game's on NHL Network in the US. I hope Bergy plays or else the B's are royally screwed. It will have to be Tuuka time for some points. I believe this is one of the B's games at hand on the Habs. As if it wasn't already important enough.SkyDog112046 wrote:Reading between the lines from all the interviews I think two things are going to happen tonight:

As much as the B's have sucked, goddamn if this hasn't been a great year of hockey so far. This post-Olympic schedule is rules for the fans. Every night there's a great match-up right up to the playoffs.

Orr should suit up. Neely too. They are probably still better goal scorers than anyone on the current roster.chungasrevenge wrote:On top of everything else, Bobby Orr and the 1970 cup team will be celebrated as well. Should be fun. The game's on NHL Network in the US.

Orr was interviewed on 98.5 yesterday. I think it's streaming on their website. What a class act that guy is. He told the media in the area to stop stirring the hornet's nest. The guy holds so much weight around here that the announcers addressed him as Mr. Orr.SkyDog112046 wrote:Orr should suit up. Neely too. Orr and Neely both retired at 28 and 30. Unbelievable. Perhaps 7-8 years of playing time lost if healthy.

Habs have a 4-point lead and the B's have two games in hand. Habs have the edge in wins and the head-to-head match up though. Personally I see the Bruins as the 8 seed. I think they can hold off the Rangers. If they're going to catch anyone it will be the Flyers (now Leighton went down) or the Senators (who are free-falling). The Habs have gotten healthy and hot at the right time - I don't see them relinquishing the cushion they've built. All bets are off if Savard AND Bergeron are out; Chara's obviously playing hurt too.chungasrevenge wrote: I believe this is one of the B's games at hand on the Habs. I think tonight's game is over-hyped. Everyone's watching, Campbell will be there, and it could be really bad for hockey if something big goes down (see Bertuzzi, Todd; Moore, Steve). I expect some hard, clean hitting from the Bruins and a little extra motivation to win. Names and numbers have been taken and shit will go down next year IMO.

Yeah, I'd be happy with the 8th seed, but things can change in a hurry with this schedule. Thornton was all over Cooke as soon as he got on the ice. Total beat down too. Too bad the refs were so quick to break it up. Chara got in a fight too. Lots of hard hitting. The B's haven't been this fired up all year. If they approached every game with this intensity they'd have been a 4 or 5 seed instead of where they are now.

Great that they "won" the fights, and granted I couldn't see the game, but getting shutout after only having taken 17 shots doesn't seem very fired up and intense to me.SkyDog112046 wrote:Thornton was all over Cooke as soon as he got on the ice. Re: The official NHL thread
Outside of the first 10 minutes, I thought they were horrible. They just seem fatigued to me or they're shutting out Julien at this point. A bunch of dead legs out there. They don't seem to have the energy to play 60 minutes. Is it conditioning or what? I know the flu was going around the dressing room, but c'mon. I find it hard to believe they're just not into it, especially a game of this magnitude and build up. Same thing with the Habs game last week and the first period of the Jersey game. I guess you have to look at Julien when the effort isn't consistently there. This has nothing to do with talent or goal scoring. It's motivation at this point.SkyDog112046 wrote:Thornton was all over Cooke as soon as he got on the ice. Total beat down too. Too bad the refs were so quick to break it up. The performance did nothing to help them in this morning's press and talk radio circuit. They're getting blasted.
The silver lining is the Rangers lost last night, so a chance to go up 5 points on Sunday and put this one behind them. Hopefully they'll play for more than 10 minutes.

Every time I've watched them this season they have been flat or tired. It can't be physical conditioning, it's more mental. I think they have quit on Julien. It's time for a coaching change.

It could be. His seat is definitely heating up, but I don't think we'll see any change this year. The thing is, they had dominating performances against Philly and Carolina last week, so there is a glimmer of effort here and there. I don't know. What a headache this season has been.SkyDog112046 wrote:Every time I've watched them this season they have been flat or tired. It can't be physical conditioning, it's more mental. Looks like Leighton is out for 8-10 weeks (AKA the season) in Philly. With Boucher in net, it'll be an early exit this year.
