Why would an NFL player(Favre) have surgery in mid-May?

So Favre got hurt in January and waited until mid-May to get his surgery. Don't most guys go under the knife in March so they can be far enough along to participate in training camp? That is if they care enough about their team and teammates to show up. Having the QB skip out on camp is a great way to help the new guys learn the offense. Just another episode in the selfish me-first legacy of good old Bert.

Mankato MN, where they have training camp, is a shitty town. It would suck even worse to have to stay in the dorms at the college, which is what they do. Having surgery now, will give him just enough time to be good to go for the season, yet miss training camp.

Even if Favre knows the offense inside-out he still has new teammates that will benefit by him being there so they can get on the same page. Brady and Manning - two of the better QB's over the past decade or so with 6 SB appearances and 4 rings between them - always stress the importance of mini camps and training camps and will stay late to give teammates extra practice reps so they can be ready when the season starts. But Favre won't even give his receivers and running backs the benefit of normal pre-season reps. Selfish prick.
