Open Letter to Fans from Cavaliers Owner Dan Gilbert

Open Letter to Fans from Cavaliers Majority Owner Dan Gilbert

Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.

You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE"

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.

Sorry, but that's simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow-up to become.

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

Just watch.

Sleep well, Cleveland.

Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day....

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:

DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue....

Dan Gilbert
Majority Owner
Cleveland Cavaliers

Today's Plain Dealer:
It was fun while it lasted. Too bad it ended on such a foul note.
LeBron James' seven years with the Cleveland Cavaliers produced more joy, more moments of shock and awe, more chase-down blocks, thunderous dunks and last-second, noting-but-net jump shots than even the most optimistic fan could have predicted when the Akron native graduated directly from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School to the NBA.
For James, there were six All-Star games, two MVP awards and one scoring title. For the team and its fans, there were five trips to the playoffs, two seasons with the best record in the league and one taste of the NBA Finals. For this city that so often fails to see itself in any but the worst possible light, there were nationally televised cutaways of elegant skyscrapers, of an iconic Rock Hall, of rowers and pleasure boats on the Cuyahoga River. For a time, as promised, Cleveland lit up like Las Vegas.
And then at 9:28 p.m. Thursday, James pulled the plug, announcing on live television -- without personally alerting the Cavaliers -- that he was joining the Miami Heat. He left cash on the table in order to play with his pals Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh and, he expects, to start collecting the championship rings that are one measure of greatness.
As fans, we should have seen it coming, at least since those strange moments against the Boston Celtics when James' competitive fire flagged and the magic left The Q. But we kept hoping we were wrong, kept praying that somehow all that civic adoration, all the millions that Dan Gilbert and the Cavaliers spent on practice courts, gourmet cooks and costly sidekicks, all James' talk about loyalty to team and town would trump everything.
Even through the ego trip of free agency and plans for a prime-time special by the enablers at ESPN to reveal "The Decision" -- reminders that, as grounded as James often seems, he is only 25 years old -- there was lingering hope that, in the end, he wouldn't morph into Art Modell and kick us to the curb.
In the end, he did. And now Cleveland fans are in a familiar position, forced to endure both disappointment and an unpromising future. There is anger in this city and a sense of betrayal, maybe nowhere more than at The Q, where Gilbert has let his emotions rule and perhaps wound the franchise he must rebuild.
As devastating as this seems, it is a business and a game. LeBron James has done what he thinks will make him happy. "The greatest challenge" he said on ESPN, "is to move on."
He has. We will, too.

LeBron stabbed Cleveland in the collective heart by effectively admitting he wasn't good enough to carry his own team, so he's going to play second-fiddle to Wade and play street ball in Miami.

HOWEVER...

Dan Gilbert needs a new tampon.

Dan is pissed because LBJ could've told him he was leaving before every other free agent was already signed somewhere. He not only left Gilbert, but he left him high and dry.
As for LBJ. Good riddance. He's not a leader. He's a front runner. Remember him wearing Cowboys gear when the Cowboys opened the 2008 NFL season in Cleveland? How 'bout when 'Bron came to a Yankees v. Indians game in Yankees clothes? How bout when LBJ choked year after year in playoffs. The franchise has been here for 40 years, and will be here for another 40. I was watching the CAVS before Lebron was born. He will not be missed.

Oh I'm not defending the guy at all. It takes a special kind of asshole to make Kobe Bryant look like a swell character by comparison.

Kinda funny how he managed to go from one of the most well-liked guys to one of the most hated in a manner of minutes.

The whole self-serving media whoring drama that he created is a big reason for that, obviously.

That's just it. If he wanted out, he should have let Gilbert know earlier and not have done the whole "The Decision" documentary. I wonder if Heat officials requested he keep the Cavs at bay in order to keep them from going after other free agents. The Cavs are still good enough to compete for a playoff spot so you have to wonder if the Heat weren't looking at a chance to bury a conference foe while taking their star player?

No player in the NBA has won a championship by themselves. Jordan included - needed Pipen. I'm a long time Heat fan and Wade is included - he needed Shaq. Kobe needed Shaq or Gasol. Pierce needed Garnet and Allen.

It's just a fact of the game I wish eveyone would get over it.

Wade, Lebron & Bosh were feared by other teams when they were on teams that half fucking sucked. Together they will win multiple championships. Fact.

QFT. And I seem to remember Kobe threatening to walk a few years ago, because after Shaq left, shit went downhill fast in LaLaLand...Kobe had NOBODY. Remember that, Grish and Yeti??

The gravitas of that open letter to Lebron is lost when you can't see that it was originally released in Comic Sans.

True. Basketball is a team sport.
RicheyJamesEdwards wrote:Jordan included - needed Pipen.
I'm sure you were just saying that to make your point, but, no, Jordan did not NEED Pippen to win championships. Pippen was a good player who was lucky enough to play alongside the greatest of all time, and was rewarded accordingly. I'm not going to say he was as unnecessary as, say, Bill Wennington or Luc Longley, but, he wasn't exactly integral, either.
