There is no way in hell Lee signs there. The guy is coming off a World Series loss. I doubt he wants to go to a team, that he'll never get another chance to be in the World Series.

Check this out: God I wish it was true.

And the Oscar goes to ... Adrian Gonzalez?

Posted on: December 6, 2010 8:35 pm

Not only did the Red Sox acquire a three-time All-Star and a two-time Gold Glove winner in Adrian Gonzalez, they also acquired a pretty good actor.

How's this for a nice-to-meet-ya:

While Gonzalez was in Boston for his physical examination over the weekend, he was at dinner Friday night with some Red Sox executives when, from across the restaurant, came a familiar face to greet him.

It just so happened that Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury was having dinner in the same restaurant.

Ellsbury approached the Red Sox table and congratulated Gonzalez on coming to Boston.

Without missing a beat, Gonzalez smiled, accepted the congratulations -- and then congratulated Ellsbury.

"And my place is going to be open, so if you need a place to stay in San Diego, let me know," Gonzalez deadpanned to Ellsbury.

According to a Padres executive, who had been briefed by their Red Sox counterparts, Ellsbury momentarily froze ... before he was assured that no, he was not headed west to San Diego as part of the trade.

Everyone was said to have gotten a big laugh -- including Ellsbury.

And then, presumably, Gonzalez, who is expected to receive a seven-year deal worth $23 or $24 million a year sometime around Opening Day ... picked up the check? No official confirmation on that part of the evening.

Laugh at that one, but the Cubs just gave a .196 hitter a lot of dough.

The story locally is that San Diego wanted a package of Ellsbury, Kelly, and Rizzo. Theo refused to part with Ellsbury, which is either because he thinks he will be a big part of the team in 2011 or he is planning on including him in a future deal. I think it's just that Ellsbury is a "Theo guy" so he doesn't want to trade him.

Congrats to Dave Van Horne who's made it to the Broadcaster's Wing of the Hall of Fame. He was the original voice of the Expos, up to just before their demise (when he moved on to Florida) and an integral part of my youth. I couldn't be happier!

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- Dave Van Horne is the winner of the 2011 Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in baseball broadcasting.

He has spent the last 42 seasons calling play-by-play action for the Montreal Expos and the Florida Marlins.

The award is presented annually by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

Van Horne, who will be honoured during Hall of Fame Weekend in July, is the first Expos broadcaster to win the Frick Award.

The Easton, Pa., native is the second Frick Award winner to have called games for a Canadian team.

The other is Tony Kubek, who broadcast games for the Toronto Blue Jays and was honoured in 2009.

I think Pena is primed for a bounce back year. I know Boston was kicking the tires on him.

That's what I thought. I know that he said if the years were right ( meaning 7 ), he'd like to stay in Texas.

Has to be. That or he said to Francona his ribs still hurt, so maybe Theo thinks it's unwise ( or ethical ) to move an injured player.

Yep, and at basically the same salary as his last deal.
The best part about Konerko re-upping is it keeps Dunn away from 1B most of the time.

Cashman has publicly admitted to making an offer to Cliff Lee.
No details of the offer were given.

Time to wait and wait and wait some more for Lee and his agent to decide where the guy wants to pitch for the next several years.

Sad times on angelswin.com right now, most people think Moreno and Reagins suck because the Angels didn't get Crawford.

Fuck, man...seven years is a long time in baseball. I wanted Crawford on the Angels but that contract is a huge pill.

mr crawford made out like a champ.
7 yrs is a joke. i also say that knowing the Yankees have offered Lee the same 7 yrs.
c'mon, the players seem to have the upper hand when it comes to free agency.
5 yrs is more than enough. 7 is ridiculous.
i heard Kruk on ESPN earlier this week saying he would not offer Strasburg a 7 yr deal, let alone a player Lee's age. made sense to me.

either crawford decided playing with the angels was a bad idea or he went with the team that offered him the most money.

I'm not sure yet.

I've always liked Crawford and his play, but he's 29. You don't give long contracts to players who's primary elite skill is speed.

They over-paid, but it does instantly improve the team. Even if it makes it very LHH heavy. Dave Cameron wrote this on fangraphs that makes me more optimistic.

I said it a page or two ago.. just not crazy about Crawford at all. Contract is ABSURD. He's not a $20M/year player.

As Kill said, for a guy whose main gift is speed... this could messy by the end. He's a decent hitter for average... no power at all. And his defense is probably wasted in LF at Fenway.

Bit of a head-scratcher. They wouldn't pay Matt Holliday, but they'll throw $140M at a rich man's Brett Gardner?

I think statistically speaking, Crawford is projected to develop power later in his career. So that's maybe why they went the length they did.

There is a lot of upside. His career OPS @ Fenway is .708 and it's the place he's played the most aside from Trop.

I think the Holliday negotiations stalled ( because he's represented by Boras ), and if you remember his ill-fated AL attempt with Oakland. I wanted no part of him in the AL East, no matter how talented he is, he just doesn't seem to have the headspace to handle it. He coulda been Renteria 2.0

Part of the thing with Crawford is you have to look at how he fits into the Sox's lineup. He will probably hit 20 HR and 90 RBI's with an average around .310 and he is a grinder type hitter that will help wear down pitchers when batting between Pedroia and Youk. And adding speed on the base paths will be a nice bonus. He is also a good defender in left which will come in handy on the road.

Look at the front end of this lineup:
Pedroia
Crawford
Youk
Gonzalez
Ortiz
Drew
Lowerey
Saltalamacchia
Ellsbury

And in later innings if Ellsbury and Crawford get on base at the same time, look out.

Add that to
Lester
Buchholz
Beckett (if healthy)
Lackey
Dice-K
Wakefield(bullpen/#6 starter)

and finish off with
Bard
Papelbon

And the team looks good. All they need is a lefty setup guy and a couple of relievers and this team should be pretty formidable.

This is the year for so called "elite free agents" to make some serious $$
I also don't think he is a $20M player, but that is what it took to secure him.
Same goes for Cliff Lee. At his age, he should not be making $20M either, but that's what it may take to secure him as well.

Cliff Lee is the epitome of elite. 7 years given his age and the fact he's a pitcher is risky, but a pitcher of his caliber as an unrestricted FA? Cliff Lee will get paid and deservedly so? It's the contract length that's risky, even if his mechanics don't look prone to injury.
