Re: Okay, so where is Cam Newton going....?
He's not the best player in the draft and Carolina would be foolish to grab him at #1 even if they do need a QB. There has to be at least 8 or 10 players who would rank higher. Not to mention that Newton will most likely be a bust. QBs who are successful in college because they are athletes first and QBs second rarely have success in the NFL. He fits more into the Vince Young, Dante Culpepper or even JaMarcus Russell category than the pocket passer who can be mobile category at this point. If he could be drafted later on and given some time to become a NFL style QB then he might be OK but if he goes top 5 and is pressured into performing next season he will be a bust.
Re: Okay, so where is Cam Newton going....?
Here we go again with the illusion that this QB will become a stud in the NFL.
Get over it people.
If I were the GM, I would not draft this kid.
I would either trade the pick for additional picks or choose another player.
There is no point to drafting this guy. The odds of him being successful in the NFL are very, very low.
I love when GM's choose a QB with the first pick and then die of a slow death because this QB(with the highest expectations) can not win games or perform like an ALL-PRO.

Philly should trade Chris Kolb and get Newton behind Vick. Philly loves their black QBs. Kolb wants out so he can be a starter anyway.Machado wrote:Here we go again with the illusion that this QB will become a stud in the NFL.

Jacksonville makes the most sense. Word is that the Jags fanbase wanted Tebow. This would allow Newton to learn under Garrard for a bit.

But a team doesn't draft a guy at #1 overall and pay him all that guaranteed money to sit on the bench and learn for 2 or 3 years. Any team that would take Newton in the two-thirds of Round 1 is crazy.HMJ wrote:Philly should trade Chris Kolb and get Newton behind Vick. Philly loves their black QBs. Well it would be the intelligent thing to do. That won't happen of course.

Re: Okay, so where is Cam Newton going....?
Is Cam Newton the best QB in the draft this year..?? NO.
..BUT.. I think that Cam right now is MILES ahead of where Tebow was last year..He actually throws a pretty nice ball.. and c'mon.. the dude is a fuckin' beast..
Sometime , somehow, one of these run-first QB's has got to really make it in the NFL..
Cam is more along the lines of Big Ben than Russell or Dante..
Being from Carolina I wouldn't want him on the team..even though we really need a big, strong QB.. I think that kid Gabbert would be a good fit..
We need a complete offensive makeover..
If only Andrew luck would come on out..that would be awesome..The kid has size, high Football IQ, and has good pocket presence

No, they most likely won't.Dawg5man wrote:Sometime , somehow, one of these run-first QB's has got to really make it in the NFL..
The NFL is different than college in terms of the caliber of players on defense that a QB faces. A real good college program might send 3 or 4 players from it's defense to the pros, and out of that maybe one or two might be stars. That means a QB who is big and strong can run through or by most of those college guys but when he gets to the NFL the QB will no longer have such an advantage in athleticism over defenders. They are going to get to him faster, he can't out run them, and they hit a lot harder.
If the QB relied on his athleticism in school and never learned the cerebral part of the game they are going to end up getting pounded when they run and making a lot of bad throws when they stay in the pocket. And college coaches are never going to take the time to groom the QBs for the switch because they have an emphasis on winning now and have nothing to gain by losing games to help get a QB ready for the pros. Guys like that would really benefit by spending time in a developmental league (like the old NFL Europe) where they can transition to a pocket QB.
Now if you can take a QB like that who always has the threat of running and teach him to stay in the pocket and go through his reads his athleticism will be an advantage because it will keep defenses honest. It's just that very few can do it. Look at Michael Vick now for an example of how that can be done effectively. But it took Vick years and a prison sentence to make the switch. A guy drafted in the top 5 and paid big money isn't going to get 3 or 4 years to develop into a dual threat QB.

Loved the essay..I was really being sarcastic..
Mike Vick had some success this year..but as the games went on, his stats went down because teams really forced him into situations in which all run first QB's find themselves in..Fucking it all up because like you said.. they can't duck and dodge 6'6 295lb solid as a rock freakshows that run 4.56 40 yard dashes..
It takes pocket presence and like I mentioned earlier.. Football IQ.. knowing where everyone is on the field and theri job at all times. Not just trying to create a highlight reel on breaking for a 35 yard TD run..
Wow.. I believe my rant was just about as long

Vick is a bust. He probably will be injured off and on next season. Seems like that type of player.

He would have to set the world on fire at the combines for the Panthers to consider him. Even then, it's still a reach at #1. Carolina will probably try to trade down, but if they can't, it'll be Nick Fairley.Dawg5man wrote:

You didn't call anything. If you're referring to Newton you said "Philly should trade Chris Kolb and get Newton behind Vick. Philly loves their black QBs. Kolb wants out so he can be a starter anyway."HMJ wrote:BOOM BABY! CALLED IT!
First, you didn't even know his name is Kevin Kolb.
Second, you had some fantasy of having him backup Vick.
Third, everyone has presumed for months that Cam was going #1. No big deal.
Beat it, loser.

Looking forward to the many horror stories in the very near future aboutHMJ wrote:BOOM BABY! CALLED IT!
Cam's failures on and off the field.
Talk about wasting the #1 pick on a player who can't help right now, and there is no assurance he will help down the line.
Just because Sam Bradford has a successful rookie season does not mean every single #1 drafted QB will achieve success.
