Manny in the canny.
Former All-Star slugger Manny Ramirez is in police custody after being arrested Monday night in Broward County, Fla., a law enforcement source confirmed to FOXSports.com.
The official said Ramirez was being booked at the jail shortly before 9 p.m. ET but declined to specify the charges against him. TMZ.com cited two unnamed witnesses who said Ramirez was involved in an altercation with his wife at his home in Weston, Fla.
Ramirez was still being held as an inmate at the jail as of 9:30 p.m. ET, according to police records.
Ramirez, 39, retired from baseball earlier this year following a second positive test for performance-enhancing drugs. His use of banned substances, which came to light late in his career, has called into question achievements that would have otherwise resulted in election to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Ramirez was the 2004 World Series MVP, made 12 All-Star teams, and hit 555 home runs in a 19-year career.

August and September collapses are nothing new to people who were Sox fans before the invasion of the pink hats. It wouldn't be fall without the Sox going into a tailspin. Part of it is injuries, part of it is a bonehead manager trying to keep his favorite guys happy. What I wouldn't give to hear Francona call Lackey a fucking stiff in one of his post game press conferences.johnk5150 wrote:Are Red Sox fans nervous?

Tonite Tim Wakefield got his 200th win ( he has the highest ERA of any 200 game winner too ). Which is a big milestone for someone who's been with the Sox for a long time ( 13 years? ). Congrats to him.
Now that that is out the way.
Mariano came within one of the all-time saves leader tonite too. Is there a more open and shut case than Mariano being the greatest of all time? Soon he'll he be the all-time leader too? One pitch.
An interesting bit of trivial knowledge. The last out of save number 600 featured three HOFers. Rivera, Jeter and Ichiro.
You can't make this shit up.

Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
I'm curious: is it unusual to find myself really not giving a fuck about how things turn out this year now that my team us about 5000 games out of contention? I've always been a huge baseball fan, and I'll pay close attention to the post season , but since the NFL got going and my team is last in not only their division but pretty much all of baseball, and since the races are pretty fucking blah this year, I find myself not paying nearly as much attention as I usually do. Does that make me a "fair weather fan"?

Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
Good question. My team didn't get good until almost a decade ago. Even before that there was always a player that you would still watch to see what they would do ( Clemens two 20K games, Boggs 200+ hits every year, a World Series [ loss ],Nomah, Mo, Pedro, Manny, etc. ). So I would always tune in. Even if the race was null and void.bane wrote:I'm curious: is it unusual to find myself really not giving a fuck about how things turn out this year now that my team us about 5000 games out of contention? Having Ed Wade as your team's GM is going to completely kill baseball in Houston, like the Olive Garden is turning off an entire generation to Italian food. There's not really anyone to get exicited about as an Astro. The Killer B's are gone, Ryan is loooonnnngggg gone, Caminetti is dead, Oswalt's a Phillie, you have Carlos Lee for 100$.....
So I wouldn't know if you could call that a "fair weather fan". If there's nothing there to be excited about it's going to be hard to sell tickets. I haven't looked at Baseball America's rankings for Farm Systems in about a year and a half. Last time I did Houston is no where on the map. So the future doesn't look too bright.
How and the hell does Ed Wade still have a job?

Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
Wade has made some really bone headed moves, signing horrible free agents to stupid contracts etc., but he really isn't to blame for the current disaster. I'd agree that he isn't the guy to pull the Astros out of it, but the majority of the fault isn't on him. There are a bunch of former Astros farm hands starting for contending teams today that his predecessors traded away on rentals like Randy Johnson and Beltran. Then there's things like the '09 (maybe 08,) draft where they didn't sign even one of their top draft picks. Again, not Wade's fault. They seriously suck right now, but laying the blame at Wade's feet really isn't fair. The farm has dramatically improved since he came aboard, and the future of the club is in better shape than what he inherited. I'm not a Wade fan, and I hope the new owner cuts him loose, but the blame for this shit goes way beyond just that guy.

I think he broke into the Majors in '92.
Wakefield got career win, with the Red Sox, 186. Score of the game? 18-6.killeverything wrote:An interesting bit of trivial knowledge. The last out of save number 600 featured three HOFers. Rivera, Jeter and Ichiro.

Some of it is injuries, but a lot of it is underperforming players. Francona needs to call some of them out. I know it doesn't work when a manager does it constantly. But after 7 years of watching a handful of overpaid stiffs stink it up or mail it in and saying "well, he was battling out there" it would rattle some cages if he got pissed off, knocked a couple of tables over and threw one or two of them under the bus.killeverything wrote:The season kinda has the stench of death about it doesn't it?SkyDog112046 wrote:Paging Dr Heimlich, you are needed in the Red Sox dressing room.

Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
Thing is, you could see this coming with the Red Sox long before the season started...... Everyone was ready to "crown" the Sox because of their off-season moves. Gonzo was a rock-solid move, and I can't think of anything bad to say about that (he hasn't been great in the clutch, but hopefully that evens out)..... Crawford has been, in my opinion, the most overrated baseball player for the past 6 or 7 years - I have NEVER liked the guy, and the day the signing was announced I was sure that it was a HUGE mistake. You watch his mechanics and "approach" at the plate, and you can see that he has no fucking clue how to hit - he has gotten by in a small market on pure athleticism - he's an athlete NOT a ball player - on top of it all, he's showing that he's another Renkawreck that can't handle actually being watched and scrutinized. Jenks was a problem going all the way back to when the Angels drafted him, and had to release him due to all of his "issues". Albers can a ridiculous first half that was so far from his career norm that you knew the blowup was on the way....... Bard is Latroy Hawkins - a great setup man, as long as their is no pressure on him - the Sox can NEVER make him a closer, and they need to bend over and give Pap whatever the fuck he wants. This team has an inconsistent offense, a starting rotation in shambles without Beckett, Buccholz, and even Matsuzaka (as bad as he could be, he gave you more that you could expect from Wake, or Kyle Weiland, etc....). NO bullpen outside of Pap and Aceves, NO bench with crap like Darnell McDonald and Jed Lowrie.
Theo spent a shit-ton of money on a bunch of shit. He grossly overpaid for a #2 hitter that never even had a place in the lineup, because you already had one of the best #2 hitters in Baseball. He wasted 2 years on Bobby Jenks.... He trades for 2 of the biggest stiffs on the market, Bedard and Conor Jackson - neither one of them are ever on the field. Bedard is a fucking pussy that makes Carl Pavano look like the ultimate warrior! Bedard was originally traded from Baltimore because the team knew the guy had no balls, and didn't really want to pitch - he'd rather spend his time on the DL while collecting a fat paycheck......all this on top of the fact that he already wasted time and money on the likes of Mike Cameron and John Fucking Lackey.
People want to come down on Tito for this team's collapse..... look at where the real problem is - Theo Fucking Epstein!!
Theo to the Cubs??? Good luck, Chicago........

I don't want to interrupt the NeverEndingRedSoxThread so I'll keep it brief. A couple of stat lines from some pitchers you may have heard of:
Roy Halladay: 219.2 IP, 2.34 ERA, 211 K, 30 BB, 1.04 WHIP, 8 CG, 1 SO
Cliff Lee: 210.2, 2.44 ERA, 211 K, 42 BB, 1.03 WHIP, 6 CG, 6 SO
See you in the playoffs.

I got Milwaukee/Philly in the NLCS. Which IMO will be better than the WS.
Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
I took this from ESPN. Well publicized the Jays could possibly be stealing signs. Worries me a little since Yankees are at Jays this weekend.
Remember the last time the Yankees were in Toronto, the Blue Jays scored 23 runs in the first two games of the series, and Girardi brought up the possibility that the Blue Jays were stealing signs.
Toronto Blue Jays at Home
Through July 15 Since
BA .269 .233
Slug Pct .462 .412
Runs PG 5.12 4.45
HR PG 1.37 1.25
Games 43 31
Since the first two games of that series, the Blue Jays have played 31 games at home and they haven’t fared so well with their bats. You can see the significant differences in performance in the chart on the right.

In a move that surprises no one. Philly clinched the NL East yesterday......5th year in a row.

So the Sox are going to be 2 up in the wild card with 10 to play. The way Tampa is playing they will need to go at least 6-4 to get the wild card. Way they are playing now they don't have a shot in hell. I know they have had injuries but Fran-coma took his foot off the gas too early.
Why is Wakefield still pitching? Come on Terry, your quest to get him win #200 probably cost your team the season but even you have to know the guy is done.

Verlander just picked up win number 24 with 8 shutout innings against the A's. It looks like he will win the pitching triple crown barring anything freaky happening in his next start. Still think he should get serious consideration for MVP as well.

He's having an unreal season. I almost started a war here asking if he should get the MVP. I personally feel he should be in the consideration. The last 24 game winner in MLB was Randy Johnson for AZ in 2002 ( 24-5 ).

The Twins shut down Morneau for the remainder of 2011 ( not that it matters ).
What about the season Mike Napoli is having?
.345 BABIP
20.3% Line drive rate
13.6% Walk rate
26.9 to 19.9% Strike out rate
.302 ISO
The only question is is this sustainable, since all these numbers are career highs?

Mo becomes the all time saves leader as of today with the
win vs the twins.
There will never be another closer quite like him and I just can't imagine
this record being broken.
Yankees don't win all 5 WS titles since '96 if not for Mo.

What a boring fall this has been, it's weird, as a Twins fan it's weird because we've been playing meaninful games in September for the last 10 years (with the exception of 2007). Mauer, Morneau, Kubel, Span all banged up this year and it's just been a total disaster. If it wasn't for Jim Thome's 600th homerun and Francisco Liriano's no-hitter there would be absolutely no reason to watch this year. Michael Cuddyer has been our team MVP batting .279 18 HR 66 RBI
The Rays surge and Red Sox collapse have gave the country a good story line to follow finally!
Who can beat the Phillies come October!? I'll be rooting for Milwaukee just because I think Nyjer Morgan (Tony Plush) is fucking hilarious.

I'll tell you who will beat the Phillies. No one. I think they are going all the way this year. That rotation is just unreal. My guess is it will be Tigers and Phillies in the series with Philly taking it 4 games to 2

Angels still alive in the wild card race. It's gettin' interesting...
