Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
The thing that bothers me the least about Pap leaving is his so-called "motivation".
He blows the save against the Angels in 2009 and says that will be his motivation for the next season.
He proceeds to have his worst season ever and he says THAT will be motivation for the next season.
He goes out and has a pretty good year last season but blows the save in the final game.
Thanks for what you did and enjoy your money.

Its even worse, I was wrong,johnk5150 wrote:Pabelbon has been very good as the Sox closer. They lost him over $1.5M a year. And these are the same Soc that paid Lackey and Crawford twice what they are worth. The issue they have always had is they lose out on guys who are capable of playing in this market over small money (like they did with Texiera) and then go overpay for some stiff to try to make up for it.bang wrote:If I'm a Sox fan I don't think losing him for THAT money bothers me much.Machado wrote:
Yup, Papel-gone!
Interesting that the money is not much more than the Sox paid him last year($11 Million), kind of seems like they should have just stepped up and gave him his contract.
So I would expect them to go after a small market closer and pay them $35-40M over 4 years and then watch the guy flame out under the pressure at which point they'll eat half his contract to move him back to another small market team.
the Sox paid him 12 mill last year.
Basically he was just NOT coming back.
I guess he kept his locker at Fenway in exceptionally perfect order,
Always!.....(read below)
"The Red Sox opened the clubhouse to reporters that day, the day after the season ended in Baltimore. The clubhouse was full of empty boxes and the lockers were in disarray, the players having dumped their stuff after the road trip and scurried home to lick their wounds after a season gone sour. The packing could wait, or fall to somebody else.
Only one locker was completely empty — not so much as a wire hanger — and that was Papelbon's.
He came back from the trip, cleaned out everything and took it home. Those are not the actions of a man who thought there was even a chance he would be back next season."

BBWAA has elected the Rays Ellickson as rookie of the year.
What a fucking joke?
13-10 with a 2.95 ERA somehow is superior to
another rookie that went 16-4 with a 3.70 ERA

A 0.75 differential in ERA is significant over the same number of starts. Wins are not the best indicator of a pitcher's effectiveness. Hellickson deserved to win.

4 years for a closer not named Mariano Rivera? Enjoy that one Philadelphia Braves.Machado wrote:Jonathan Papelbon has agreed to a four-year deal with the Phillies.
The deal is reportedly worth roughly $50 million.
I knew he was going and didn't think he was worth what he was going to seek. 2007 was awesome and then?
Blew the ALCS, sucked in 2009, blew it against Baltimore. Quality arms are hard to find, but like Theo Epstein I have no problem of the team moving on from him.

Pap is stealing money from the Phillies.
I heard Pap mentioned he wanted to add to his collection of WS rings.
I think the only additions he will see will be relegated to his bank account.
Imagine the booing Pap is going to hear on a regular basis from Philly fans?
Those fans are going to be ruthless and hurt Pap's feelings,

Yeah adding Paplebon to the back end of that pitching staff will turn out to be one of the worst signings in baseball history, they had the best record in baseball last year and got beat by an extremley hot team that eventually won the WS. It's not like the phils have been good the past 5 years or anything, Yep getting paplebon is the nail in the coffin, I can imagine how he'll suck in the NL. I'd much rather Amaro jr threw a ton of cash at an ace like AJ Burnett.Machado wrote: The only closer is the game worth a 4 year deal is Mo.

Dale Sveum is going to manage in Chicago.
Wow. I was hoping against all that he wouldn't end up in Boston. Way to go Theo, do you remember how much he sucked as a 3B coach in Boston?
Please don't let this be the compensation for letting you walk your last year.
Also Clayton Kershaw won the NL Cy Young.

Give the guy a year or two and he might, he might want back in.

Sveum's presser this morning was boring as shit. It's exactly what that team needs. A baseball guy that will focus on things like manufacturing runs, and defense. He'll bench Castro on his first brainfart at short, not his twentieth.

A baseball guy? Really?
When he was a third base coach the fucking shortstop would be holding the ball and Sveum would send them home.
Remember the last "baseball guy" who managed the Cubs? Dusty Baker? Apparently that the last guy they need.

Out of all the losses this time of year, Pappelbon will sting at first but I wouldn't have given him what he was seeking. His schtick was getting old.
The one that hurts, just really hurts is Heidi Whatney. Plus she's going to work for the Lakers.

Breaking news!!! Justin Verlander has been named AL MVP. As he rightly should be. Took 13 first place votes along with 3 second and 3 third place votes.

Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
This may be the greatest story I've read in forever. Maybe this is the guy that thought it would be a good idea to hire Ventura.
A 51-year-old man accused of breaking into White Sox general manager Kenny Williams’ Chicago home was arrested after police found him wearing Williams’ clothes and his 2005 World series ring, authorities said.
Williams told NBC5 that the burglar drank his beer, ate frozen pizza, surfed the internet and kicked his shoes off on the bed.
He even defrosted a lobster.
Wayne L. Field III, of the 900 block of West Lawrence Ave. is charged with residential burglary after allegedly entering the home and taking several articles of clothing, a set of keys and jewelry, police said.
NBC5 reported the victim was Kenny Williams and that Field was found by police wearing Williams’ clothes and his World Series ring.
It happened between Nov. 18 and the 21, while Williams was out of town.
During the burglary, Field left behind a hospital bracelet with his name on it, police said. He even returned to the home some time later and was seen peeking into the home.

I disagree. Normally, the MVP should go to an everyday player, as pitchers have their own award, however, once in a decade, or maybe generation, a pitcher has a season so good, coupled with no everyday player being clearly above the rest, and the award is justly awarded to a pitcher.Machado wrote:The voters should all be ashamed and recalled.madmaxfan wrote:Breaking news!!! Guys like Bautista, Ellesbury, and Granderson were good (particularly Ellesbury IMO), but none of their years can compare to Verlander's. Whether the MVP is the best player in the league, or the most valuable to his team, Verlander wins on both counts. NOBODY had a better year than him at their position, and if he wasn't a Tiger, they do not win that division. Not only did he rack up wins et al, but how many innings did he save that bullpen?
IMO Verlander's year was something special and deserves to be marked by a Cy Young AND MVP.

I'm not too sure how I feel about adding another wild card to each division. It seems like a poor way to account for there not being a viable salary cap. Although a blood test for HGH is pretty cool. Selig let steroid ball happen, but I like the fact that under his watch it's ending ( Manny Ramirez ).Facedown wrote:So, baseball has avoided the CBA nightmares of the NFL and NBA, any thoughts on the new stuff?
John Dewan's Stat Of The Week
Stats To Be Thankful For
November 23, 2011
I’d like to wish all my readers a very Happy Thanksgiving!
In keeping with the theme of thankfulness, here are some numbers in the baseball world to which this sentiment applies.
21 – That is the number of consecutive years of labor peace that baseball is guaranteed with MLB and the MLBPA having agreed on a new five-year collective bargaining agreement. As contentious as baseball's labor history has been, the general state of harmony that has existed since the last players' strike ended in early 1995 represents the longest such stretch since the MLBPA was formed in 1953. In that time the NHL has lost a full season, the NBA lost part of the 1998-1999 season and has already canceled games for this season, and the NFL went through an extended lockout this year before coming to an agreement just before the season started. Life is good for baseball fans right now.
2,728 – That is the number of career wins for future Hall of Fame manager Tony LaRussa. Tony goes out on top, having led the St. Louis Cardinals to an astonishing World Series victory after prevailing in an equally thrilling National League Wild Card race on the last day of the regular season. That gives him three World Series titles to go along with six pennants.
160,000,000 – That is the total dollar value of Matt Kemp's new contract extension to stay with the Los Angeles Dodgers. It is great to see that one of the league's premier franchises is beginning to move past the prolonged financial troubles and legal battles that have been hanging over the club. Kemp and 2011 Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw are two of the bright young stars of the game, and this signing shows that the Dodgers may yet have a bright future ahead of them.
24 – That is the number of different teams, out of 30 total MLB franchises, that have reached the playoffs in the last 10 years dating back to 2002. Furthermore, there have been eight different World Series champions in those 10 years. While there may be some degree of luck involved in getting through the playoffs and winning the World Series, it is an impressive accomplishment to sustain success over the 162-game regular season to make the playoffs. That level of parity is a reason that every fan should feel hopeful that their team could very easily become the next great contender. Even Cubs fans have reason to hope!
Infinity – That’s the number of thank yous I’d like to give my staff for all their help in bringing you Stat of the Week. My name is on this feature, but they do more than their share of the heavy lifting. Thank you to Rob Burckhard, Charles Fiore, Ben Jedlovec, Amanda Modelski and Joe Rosales. You guys do great work!
Awwwww.
Joe Nathan is now a Texas Ranger. With a two year deal and a club option for a third ( 14 per ). This allows Neftali Feliz to move to the rotation. Their bullpen ( aside from choking in the series ) was astounding last season. If Nathan is fully recovered their gonna be scary.
The Marlins traded C John Baker to the Padres for P Wade Leblanc.
Oh and congrats to NL MVP Ryan Braun.

I think the extra wild card team might be cool.
1 and done to get into the playoffs and it will put MUCH more pressure on teams to win their division.
Indians resign Grady Sizemore to 1/yr deal.
