You're right. Belichick would never go for a FG at the end of a playoff game. I can remember as plain as day how in the Superbowl against the Rams he had Brady take a knee at the end of regulation rather than have Vinatieri attempt a FG as time expired. Belichick played for overtime because he knows that field goals are too risky! That's why a kicker has never won a big game for the Patriots.

How often is a 66 yard FG attempted (with a TIED score) on the LAST play of regulation? There's a reason for that.

Contrast that with a 50% chance of losing the coin toss. The correct call is to go for it.
It wasn't "sudden death" OT for one, genius.

Pittsburgh had all the momentum, late in the 4th quarter.

What were the odds that Denver would score a TD on their first OT possession, if they won the toss? 15%? 20%?

Pittsburgh's odds at that point .... 40%? 50%?

Tomlin made the same decision Belichick would (ESPECIALLY on the road).

You play the better odds. You don't risk a 66+ yard FG attempt play "going awry" at the end of regulation.

Playoff strategy 101.

How often does a team go 80 yards in 1 play for the OT win?

Twice .... ever?

48 yards isn't 66+ yards, either.

Tell me a non-Super Bowl playoff game where he did the same thing, from 55+ yards away.

Take your time. I'll wait.

There have been 57-60 yard FG tries recently. The air in Denver adds another 8-10 yards. Both kickers were hitting 55 yard FGs in practice and putting the ball into the nets behind the posts (another 15 yards). It was on the edge of being possible.

And with the new OT rules it's still sudden death if a team scores a TD. It does is change the strategy from playing for a conservative FG to going all out for a TD, but it still means that only one team has to take possession. The 0.1% risk of the field goal being blocked and returned versus the 10% chance of making the field goal with a 90% chance of going to OT anyway is still better than the 50% chance of losing the coin toss.

There were 12 OT games in 2011. 10 of them ended on the first possession. Even with a team being forced to go for a TD cutting those odds down there is still something like a 2-in-5 chance of losing the game on the first possession. Factor in the coin toss and it's a 1-in-5 chance of never seeing the ball. I'll take a 0.1% chance of losing on the FG try against a 20% chance of losing in OT without ever getting the ball.

It took ref Ron Winter 39 seconds to explain the overtime rules last night before the kick in the Denver game. It took the Broncos 11 seconds to end it.

You know, with all the rule changes recently implemented to help the passing offense, they might want to revisit the OT rules again. Because right now, the NFL is saying, "Go out make a stop on defense. Just don't hit 'em high, low, or when they're defenseless. And don't touch a receiver 5 yards down the field."

Broncos, playoff teams should officially protest Josh McDaniels hire in New England

By Mike Klis

Once again, Bill Belichick has figured out a way to cheat the system. And once again, he caught the NFL standing there sucking their collective thumbs.

The New England Patriots reportedely have hired St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to be their new offensive assistant. Nothing wrong there. What’s wrong is McDaniels reportedly can start immediately and help the Patriots during their playoff run.

This is the 2011 season. McDaniels finished the 2011 season as the Rams’ offensive coordinator. He got his chance to contribute this year. His Rams scored an embarrassing 12.1 points per game, making them easily the league’s lowest scoring offense. His season should be finished.

Instead, let me get this straight: McDaniels stunk so bad in 2011, he might get a Super Bowl ring? Stop this, Roger Goodell. Now.

Should Houston defeat Cincinnati today (its 7-7 early in the second quarter) and the Broncos beat the Pittsburgh Steelers tomorrow at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, the Broncos would play at New England next week (probably Saturday night) in a second-round playoff game.

No coach outside of the Dove Valley building knows the 2011 Broncos better than McDaniels. He may know Tim Tebow better than John Fox knows Tebow.

People around here and St. Louis might not think much of McDaniels’ coaching ability. But I’m telling you this is a smart football coach. This is a talented person. He may not be a leader of men, but he is good enough as a coach/talent evaluator to give the Pats a decided competitive advantage against the Broncos, if it should come to that.

And it’s not just the Broncos who should cry foul. Among playoff teams, McDaniels’ Rams also played this season the New York Giants, Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers (twice) from the NFC, and Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers from the AFC.

That’s eight playoff teams that have just suffered a competitive disadvantage, however small, against the Pats.

There may be no rule against McDaniels working immediately for the Pats. But this clearly violates the spirit of fair competition. It’s so Belichick. It’s so McDaniels, for that matter.

All the Pats have to do is hire away Steve Scarnecchia from Syracuse and the whole cheating gang gets back together.

Come on, Mr. Goodell. Exercise those commissioner power and put a stop to this.

Well, I hate the Pats with a passion, but tough shit with the McDaniels hire. The Pats owned the Broncos a few weeks back without McDaniels and I think they'll do it again. This smacks of crybaby faggotry from those Denver people.

First of all, fuck all you haters.

Second of all, I don't have a problem w/ the McDaniels hiring. If you can hire a head coach in the middle of the season and put in an interim, I guess you can with an OC. But he's still a cocksucker.

That McDaniels thing is a bit weird. I wouldn't be surprised if Goodell nixed it. That said, I doubt he was hired due to the Denver thing. That's probably just a nice bonus.

Brady Queen won't see the field, Lickety.

He's a glorified clipboard holder. Nothing more.

BTW - Brady QUEEN didn't take ANY MORE first team reps than he EVER does, this past week.

McDaniels was going to be fired. New England is doing St Louis a favor by taking him off their hands so they don't have to pay him for next season. Obviously New England will benefit by having someone familiar with the system to step in for O'Brien, but it's a win/win for both teams.

If the other teams really want something to get upset about concerning New England they should focus on Belichick's private scouting network through his former coaches now in the NCAA. You know how Penn St doesn't give out real scouting numbers to NFL teams? They still won't to 31 of those teams.

To be fair, NYY fans do come into threads for other sports and complain that salary caps that prevent them from buying championships(or at least playoff spots) in other sports are unfair.
