CBS analyst Phil Simms isn’t so sure that Luck is the next big thing.

“I’m sorry. I just don’t see big time NFL throws,” Simms said, according to SNY’s and SiriusXM’s Adam Schein.

Colts VP Tom Telesco named was San Diego's new general manager today. Congrats to him, but it's a rough loss for the Colts. Bruce Arians will most likely be gone as well. I guess that's what happens when you achieve great success, other teams become very interested in your personnel.

COLTS HONORED FOR COMPLETED SEASON

http://www.colts.com/news/article-1/COL ... 42d01157e2

INDIANAPOLIS – The Colts had one of the greatest one-season turnarounds in NFL history in 2012 going from 2-14 to 11-5.

The nine-game jump from 2011 tied for the third-best improvement in league history.

It was accomplished with a new general manager and head coach, along with an interim leader when Chuck Pagano was forced to be absent while battling leukemia.

The performance by Indianapolis has resulted in a few post-season awards. Ryan Grigson has been selected by Pro Football Weekly and the Professional Football Writers Association as the NFL Executive of the Year.

Pagano and interim head coach Bruce Arians have been chosen as co-winners of the AFC Coach-of-the-Year by the Committee of 101 in Kansas City, and they will be honored at the prestigious 101 Awards gala in March. Additionally, they have been selected as winners of the 24th Greasy Neale Professional Coach-of-the-Year Award from the Maxwell Football Club.

Arians himself was cited by Pro Football Weekly and the Professional Football Writers Association as the NFL Coach-of-the-Year and the Assistant Coach-of-the-Year.

Grigson joined the Colts last January and crafted a roster that blended a small number of returning veterans with seasoned and rookie newcomers. Well more than half of the roster that ended the season was comprised of players with no more than three years of experience. There were nine rookies and 13 players on injured reserve as the Colts ended the year.

Grigson succeeded Bill Polian in Indianapolis, and Polian was a past winner of the award. Grigson brought players from the Canadian League, the UFL, the AFL and the IFL to Indianapolis. One player, Jerrell Freeman, topped the team with 203 tackles while starting 16 games. Grigson’s draft class gained more scrimmage yards (3,108) than any other in the league since 1970.

Pagano was in his first season as head coach, but had to leave the squad for 12 games. Arians daily perpetuated the message of his dear friend Pagano. After each practice, the team broke with the chant, “1-2-3, Chuck,” and Arians requested the lights be left on in Pagano’s office until he could return.

Pagano kept in electronic contact with players and Arians during his absence. He visited the team before and after a 23-20 home win over Miami and congratulated his troops on their commitment.

Arians was 9-3 in subbing for Pagano, tying the NFL mark for wins by an interim leader. Arians returned the reins to Pagano for the December 30 finale against Houston.

The work both men performed led to them being named co-winners 101 Award. This prominent group has saluted NFL leaders for the past 42 years, and a number of Colts have been honored, including individuals such as Tony Dungy, Peyton Manning and John Teerlinck.

Pagano and Arians will be honored in a banquet in Kansas City on Saturday, March 2.

The tandem will be honored with the Greasy Neale Award from the Maxwell Football Club. The award presentation will take place at the annual gala on Friday, March 1 in Atlantic City.

Arians, additionally, has been named the NFL Coach-of-the-Year and the NFL Assistant Coach-of- the-Year by the PFW/PFWA. The head coaching award dates back to 1968, and Arians joins Don Shula (1968) and Ted Marchibroda (1975) as Colts coaches to gain the honor. He is the first Colts assistant to win the honor that has been presented since 1993, and he is the first individual ever to win both awards in the same year.

Arians and Pagano were able to lead the Colts through a season without consecutive losses, an accomplishment done just nine times in franchise history.

The PFW/PFWA also cited two Colts – tight end Dwayne Allen and wide receiver T.Y. Hilton – to the NFL All-Rookie Team.

Allen set the club seasonal tight end rookie record with 45 receptions. He had 521 reception yards and three touchdowns while starting 16 games.

Hilton had 50 receptions for 861 yards and a team-leading seven touchdowns. Hilton set the club rookie record with five 100-plus yardage games. He also was named to the publication’s rookie squad as the punt returner. Hilton had an 11.5 average on 26 returns. He became the first Colts player ever with a punt return and reception for a touchdown in the team’s 20-13 victory over Buffalo on November 25.

Allen and Hilton were third-round picks of the Colts in 2012.

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was named Pro Football Weekly/Pro Football Writers of America Rookie of the Year and NFL offensive rookie of the year, the team announced Monday.

The annual award is selected by Pro Football Weekly editors and contributors along with members of the pro football writers group.

Griffin completed 258 of 393 passes for 3,200 yards, 20 touchdowns and only five interceptions during his rookie campaign, posting a passer rating of 102.4. He also carried the ball 120 times for 815 yards and seven touchdowns. Griffin’s 102.4 passer rating, his 1.3 interception percentage and 814 rushing yards all are NFL records for rookies.

The honor is a good sign for Griffin, who also is a candidate for the Associated Press rookie of the year honor, which is considered the main rookie of the year award and will be announced on Feb. 2. The Rams’ Sam Bradford and the Panthers’ Cam Newton won PFW/PFWA rookie of the year honors and then went on to win the AP rookie of the year.

Griffin’s teammates Alfred Morris and London Fletcher earned second-team honors on the Associated Press’s All-Pro team this past weekend.

Morris rushed for 1,613 yards (second in the NFL) and 13 touchdowns this season. Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson and Seattle’s Marshawn Lynch earned first-team nods ahead of Morris.

Fletcher recorded 139 tackles, eighth-most in the NFL, and five interceptions (tops among linebackers) as well as three sacks.

Making the first team ahead of Fletcher were San Francisco inside linebackers Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman.

SOLID ROOKIE SEASON

http://www.colts.com/

INDIANAPOLIS – Dwayne Allen spoke early this season of not having reached his goal just by making the Colts’ roster.

Allen’s vision was much larger. He said he would not be happy until the club had achieved success in its ultimate goal when he could hoist a trophy with triumphant teammates.

Such talk sometimes is brash, baseless and empty, but not from Allen. He is a dedicated performer who drew season-long praise from all organizational corners, including from where it counted heavily.

“Dwayne Allen, really to me, is a veteran who just happens to be a rookie,” said General Manager Ryan Grigson at the season’s quarter point. “The way he carries himself, the way he practices, his body language, just everything speaks to a guy who has been in this league a while.”

Allen was one of five Colts to open every game. After not having a reception in his debut, Allen did so in each of the remaining 15 games.

He had at least three receptions in eight outings and set the franchise rookie positional record with 45. Allen’s reception total ranked 12th in the AFC and 22nd in the NFL for tight ends, while leading all rookie performers. His 521 reception yards ranked 12th and 21st, leading all rookies, too.

Heavy contributions from tight ends has marked Bruce Arians’ career, and he loved the dimension Allen added from the start.

“His strength is evident,” said Arians. “It’s very hard for a young tight end to come in and block at this level, and he’s shown an outstanding effort and ability to do it. His pass catching is good. He’s probably as sudden a guy with the ball in his hands as I’ve seen in a while at tight end.”

Allen’s three scoring receptions tied for third-most on the club and ranked behind T.Y. Hilton (seven) and Reggie Wayne (five). Allen’s first career catch produced a touchdown against Minnesota.

“He’s such a dynamic player. He can do so many things,” said Andrew Luck. “You’ll see him split out wide. You’ll see him in the backfield. You’ll see him with his hand down in the tight end position.

“It’s nice to see the breadth and volume he can do as a football player. I think it adds fun to the offense.”

Away from the team for 12 weeks, Chuck Pagano never stopped watching games and practices to evaluate his players. Pagano held the same opinion as Grigson.

“He doesn’t look like a rookie to me. Early on maybe, but I’ve seen him progress and get better,” said Pagano. “I’ve seen his blocking get better. I think he’s outstanding.

“He’s very, very strong at the point (of attack). He’s done a great job as an in-line blocker and then in the pass game when we’re able to get (him) out and in space.”

Allen said late in the year it was not time to feel complacent or excited about playing as a rookie. He was much more concerned about the technical aspects of his game that could be improved.

He credited Pagano for instilling in the spring and summer the notion of rookies expecting to compete and succeed, not just hoping for it.

“He gave us shirts that listed us 32 out of 32 teams in the NFL,” said Allen. “He said, ‘That’s where they predict you. Why can’t we go to the playoffs? Why can’t we win the division? Why not? Why not?’ That’s kind of the way (we played) all year.”

When given the chance to reflect and tie a bow on what had been an productive year that saw him exceed the reception totals of the club’s previous two top rookie tight ends (42, Ken Dilger, 1995; 35, Mackey, 1963), Allen showed his nature by talking only about getting better going forward.

“The 2012 team had a lot of optimism. But 2013, only time will tell,” said Allen. “Coach (Pagano) talked about how the bar is set for this program. The team that he wants to coach, the team that he wants to have in Indianapolis, the bar is set high for us.

“That team’s (2013) character is going to be built this offseason and in training camp. Hopefully, I’ll take advantage of this offseason and get in the best shape possible so when it’s third-and-whatever and my team calls on me to make a big play, I’ll be there.”
